Characteristics of 30-centimeter mercury ion thrusters

The technology development of the 30-cm J-series mercury ion thruster for prime propulsion application in solar electric propulsion systems has been conducted at NASA-Lewis Research Center. This development included the fabrication and testing of the 30-cm thruster. The present J-series thruster design is the result of an intensive effort to eliminate real and potential design deficiencies that were uncovered during initial endurance, structural, and performance tests. A standardized set of test and data recording procedure was formulated to allow for the characterization of the J-series thruster. This paper briefly reviews the design of the J-series thruster and presents a compilation of recent test results that define the J-series thruster characteristics.

Frictional and morphological characteristics of ion plated soft, metallic films

Ion plated metallic films in contrast to films applied by other deposition techniques offer a lower friction coefficient, longer endurance lives and exhibit a gradual increase in friction coefficient after the film has been worn off. The friction coefficients of metallic films are affected by the degree of adherence, thickness and nucleation and growth characteristics. The effective film thickness for the minimum friction coefficient was established for Au and Pb films. The nucleation and growth characteristics during ion plating lead to a fine, continuous crystalline structure, which contributes to a lower friction coefficient.

Sterilizable Binder Is Stable at 135 degrees C

Polyurethane binder for solid propellants endures heat sterilization without decomposition based on an ester diol. Binder resists oxidation under prolonged exposure to 135 degrees C temperature, low enough in viscosity to be handled easily during processing, and readily mixed with oxidizers, such as ammonium perchlorate. Polyurethane is also suitable material for encapsulants, potting compounds, and coatings that must be sterilized.

Development of a static feed water electrolysis system

A one person level oxygen generation subsystem was developed and production of the one person oxygen metabolic requirements, 0.82 kg, per day was demonstrated without the need for condenser/separators or electrolyte pumps. During 650 hours of shakedown, design verification, and endurance testing, cell voltages averaged 1.62 V at 206 mA/sq cm and at average operating temperature as low as 326 K, virtually corresponding to the state of the art performance previously established for single cells. This high efficiency and low waste heat generation prevented maintenance of the 339 K design temperature without supplemental heating. Improved water electrolysis cell frames were designed, new injection molds were fabricated, and a series of frames was molded. A modified three fluid pressure controller was developed and a static feed water electrolysis that requires no electrolyte in the static feed compartment was developed and successfully evaluated.

Effect of fuel to air ratio on Mach 0.3 burner rig hot corrosion of ZrO2-Y2O3 thermal barrier coatings

A Mach 0.3 burner rig test program was conducted to determine how the fuel to air mass ratio affects the durability of ZrO2-Y2O3/Ni-16Cr-6Al-0.31Y thermal barrier coating systems in combustion products containing 5 ppm Na and 2 ppm V. As the fuel to air mass ratio was increased from 0.039 to 0.049, the durability of ZrO2-6Y2O3, ZrO2-8Y2O3 and ZrO2-12Y2O3 coatings decreased. ZrO2-8Y2O3 coatings were approximately 2X and 1.3X more durable than ZrO2-12Y2O3 and ZrO2-6Y2O3 coatings respectively at the fuel to air mass ratio of 0.039. The number of one hour cycles endured by ZrO2-8Y2O3 coatings varied from averages of 53 to 200 for the fuel to air mass ratios of 0.049 and 0.039, respectively. At the fuel to air mass ratio of 0.049, all ZrO2-Y2O3 coated specimens failed in 40 to 60 one hour cycles

Advanced ceramic coating development for industrial/utility gas turbines

A program was conducted with the objective of developing advanced thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems. Coating application was by plasma spray. Duplex, triplex and graded coatings were tested. Coating systems incorporated both NiCrAly and CoCrAly bond coats. Four ceramic overlays were tested: ZrO2.82O3; CaO.TiO2; 2CaO.SiO2; and MgO.Al2O3. The best overall results were obtained with a CaO.TiO2 coating applied to a NiCrAly bond coat. This coating was less sensitive than the ZrO2.8Y2O3 coating to process variables and part geometry. Testing with fuels contaminated with compounds containing sulfur, phosphorus and alkali metals showed the zirconia coatings were destabilized. The calcium titanate coatings were not affected by these contaminants. However, when fuels were used containing 50 ppm of vanadium and 150 ppm of magnesium, heavy deposits were formed on the test specimens and combustor components that required frequent cleaning of the test rig. During the program Mars engine first-stage turbine blades were coated and installed for an engine cyclic endurance run with the zirconia, calcium titanate, and calcium silicate coatings. Heavy spalling developed with the calcium silicate system. The zirconia and calcium titanate systems survived the full test duration. It was concluded that these two TBC's showed potential for application in gas turbines.

Characteristics of the LeRC/Hughes J-series 30-cm engineering model thruster

As a consequence of endurance and structural tests performed on 900-series engineering model thrusters (EMT), several modifications in design were found to be necessary for achieving performance goals. The modified thruster is known as the J-series EMT. The most important of the design modifications affect the accelerator grid, gimbal mount, cathode polepiece, and wiring harness. The paper discusses the design modifications incorporated, the condition(s) they corrected, and the characteristics of the modified thruster.

Evaluation of the hot corrosion behavior of thermal barrier coatings

Calcium silicate and yttria-stabilized ZrO2/(M-Cr-Al-Y) thermal barrier coating systems on air-cooled specimens were exposed to sodium- plus vanadium-doped Mach 0.3 combustion gases. The thermal barrier coating endurance was determined to be a strong inverse function of the ceramic coating thickness. Coating system durability was increased through the use of Ni-Cr-Al-Y and Co-Cr-Al-Y bond coatings with high chromium and aluminum contents. Chemical and electron microprobe analyses supported the predictions of condensate compositions and the determination of their roles in causing spalling of the ceramic coatings.

Development of CdO-graphite-Ag coatings for gas bearings to 427 C

Graphite is one of the most commonly known lubricants. Its effectiveness in a range between room temperature (RT) and 540 C is reportedly improved by adding cadmium oxide. CdO-graphite powder in a gas carrier has been used in numerous applications that rely on dry lubrication. A coating of this composition was developed and successfully tested in foil air bearings for long periods up to a temperature of 427 C and at a normal contacting load (during starting and stopping) of 14 kPa based on bearing projected area. The addition of ultra-fine silver to the CdO-graphite has improved the coating endurance. At 427 C, the CdO-graphite-Ag coating performed better than CdO-graphite without silver, both for extended periods at 14 kPa loading and for limited periods at 35 kPa. At 288 C, the coating was tested for an extended period up to 28 kPa and has also successfully completed high-speed shock tests to an acceleration level of 100g.

The role of betatron acceleration in complex solar bursts

An explanation in terms of betatron acceleration is attempted for two prominent features of solar hard X-ray emission profiles: the multiplicity manifested by complex impulsive events, and the intense, long-enduring radiation typical of two-stage or extended events. The model employs the basic characteristics of a simple magnetic trap. The observed spectral evolution can be represented effectively by a set of characteristics derived in a thick-target representation. The application to multiple-spike and two-stage bursts is studied, and it is found that impulsive events show no signs of betatron acceleration. However, during the first few minutes of the second stage, the nonimpulsive X-ray emission appears to be consistent with the predictions of the model. Several intense extended events are analyzed and the betatron process is established as a viable candidate for producing the early second-stage emission.

Induced venous pooling and cardiorespiratory responses to exercise after bed rest

Venous pooling induced by a specially constructed garment is investigated as a possible means for reversing the reduction in maximal oxygen uptake regularly observed following bed rest. Experiments involved a 15-day period of bed rest during which four healthy male subjects, while remaining recumbent in bed, received daily 210-min venous pooling treatments from a reverse gradient garment supplying counterpressure to the torso. Results of exercise testing indicate that while maximal oxygen uptake endurance time and plasma volume were reduced and maximal heart rate increased after bed rest in the control group, those parameters remained essentially unchanged for the group undergoing venous pooling treatment. Results demonstrate the importance of fluid shifts and venous pooling within the cardiovascular system in addition to physical activity to the maintenance of cardiovascular conditioning.
