Emergent interlayer magnetic order via strain-induced orthorhombic distortion in the 5 d Mott insulator Sr 2 IrO 4

In this letter, we report a La 2 CuO 4 -like interlayer antiferromagnetic order in Sr2IrO4 films with large orthorhombic distortion (>1.5%). The biaxial lattice strain in epitaxial heterostructures of Sr 2 IrO 4 /Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 lowers the crystal symmetry of Sr 2 IrO 4 from tetragonal ($C_4$) to orthorhombic ($C_2$), guiding the Ir $5d J_{text{eff}}$ = 1/2 pseudospin moment parallel to the elongated b axis via magnetic anisotropy. From resonant x-ray scattering experiments, we observed an antiferromagnetic order in the orthorhombic Sr 2 IrO 4 film whose interlayer stacking pattern is inverted from that of the tetragonal Sr 2 IrO 4 crystal. This interlayer stacking is similar to that of the orthorhombic La 2 CuO 4 , implying that the asymmetric interlayer exchange interactions between $\textit{a}$ and $\textit{b}$ directions exceed the anisotropic interlayer pseudodipolar interaction. Our result suggests that strain-induced distortion can provide a delicate knob for tuning the long-range magnetic order in quasi-two-dimensional systems by evoking the competition between the interlayer exchange coupling and the pseudodipolar interaction.

Quantum spin liquid with emergent chiral order in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model

The interplay between spin frustration and charge fluctuation gives rise to an exotic quantum state in the intermediate-interaction regime of the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard model, while the nature of the state is under debate. Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2) spin ⓍU(1) charge symmetries implemented, we study the triangular-lattice Hubbard model defined on the long cylinder geometry up to circumference W=6. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction 9≲U/t≲10.75, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length L increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed.

Emergent quasi-two-dimensional metallic state derived from the Mott-insulator framework

Recent quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) systems with judicious exploitation of the atomic monolayer or few-layer architecture exhibit unprecedented physical properties that challenge the conventional wisdom on condensed matter physics. Here we show that the infinite layer SrCuO 2 (SCO), a topical cuprate Mott insulator in bulk form, can manifest an unexpected metallic state in the quasi-2D limit when SCO is grown on TiO 2 -terminated SrTiO 3 (STO) substrates. The sheet resistance does not conform to Landau's Fermi liquid paradigm. Hard x-ray core-level photoemission spectra demonstrate a definitive Fermi level that resembles the hole doped metal. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy also reveals features analogous to those of a hole doped Mott insulator. Based on these results, we conclude that the hole doping does not occur at the interfaces between SCO and STO; instead, it comes from the transient layers between the chain-type and the planar-type structures within the SCO slab. In conclusion, the present work reveals a metallic state in the infinite layer SCO and invites further examination to elucidate the spatial extent of this state.

Emergent Chern-Simons interactions in 3+1 dimensions

Parity-violating superconductors can support a low-dimension local interaction that becomes, upon condensation, a purely spatial Chern-Simons term. Solutions to the resulting generalized London equations can be obtained from solutions of the ordinary London equations with a complex penetration depth, and suggest several remarkable physical phenomena. The problem of flux exclusion by a sphere brings in an anapole moment, the problem of current-carrying wires brings in an azimuthal magnetic field, and the problem of vortices brings in currents along the vortices. We demonstrate that interactions of this kind, together with a conceptually related dimensionally reduced Chern-Simons interaction, can arise from physically plausible microscopic interactions. Perturbative approaches in relativistic kinetic theory and the emergence of first-order hydrodynamics

Hydrodynamics can be formulated in terms of a perturbative series in derivatives of the temperature, chemical potential, and flow velocity around an equilibrium state. Different formulations for this series have been proposed over the years, which consequently led to the development of various hydrodynamic theories. In this work, we discuss the relativistic generalizations of the perturbative expansions put forward by Chapman and Enskog, and Hilbert, using general matching conditions in kinetic theory. This allows us to describe, in a comprehensive way, how different out-of-equilibrium definitions for the hydrodynamic fields affect the development of the hydrodynamic perturbative series. We provide a perturbative method for systematically deriving the hydrodynamic formulation recently proposed by Bemfica, Disconzi, Noronha, and Kovtun (BDNK) from relativistic kinetic theory. The various transport coefficients that appear in BDNK (at first-order) are explicitly computed using a new formulation of the relaxation time approximation for the Boltzmann equation. Assuming Bjorken flow, we also determine the hydrodynamic attractors of BDNK theory and compare the overall hydrodynamic evolution obtained using this formulation with that generated by the Israel-Stewart equations of motion and also kinetic theory.
