Present obliquity oscillations of Mars - Fourth-order accuracy in orbital e and I

A long period analysis of solar system orbital evolution, correct to fourth order in orbital eccentricities and inclinations (Bretagnon, 1974), and an improved value of the planet's moment of inertia (Reasenberg, 1977) have been incorporated in a recalculation of the obliquity oscillations of Mars. A linearized solution predicts a maximum oscillation amplitude of 13.6 deg centered on a long-term average value of 24.4 deg. A numerical integration of the obliquity for the past 10,000,000 years is also presented. Epochs of minimal oscillation like the present occur at intervals of the order of 4 m.y.

Evidence for earth magnetospheric tail associated phenomena at 3100 R sub E

Examination of Pioneer 7 NASA Ames Research Center plasma analyzer data obtained in February 1977 at about 3100 earth radii, downstream from earth in the vicinity of the expected extended geomagnetic tail indicate that tail-related phenomena may have been observed. These observations are characterized by intermittent intervals of extremely low levels of plasma ion flux. Corresponding Prognoz 5 Space Research Institute plasma ion data obtained in the vicinity of earth indicate typical solar-wind flux levels and a relatively steady character of the solar wind during this time. These recent Pioneer 7 observations in the vicinity of the expected geomagnetic tail at about 3100 earth radii are consistent with earlier Pioneer 7 observations in September 1966 at about 1000 earth radii and Pioneer 8 observations in January 1968 at about 500 earth radii and represent the most extended positive observational information of the extended nature of the geomagnetic tail. These measurements suggest that at times Jupiter's magnetosphere may have tail-associated phenomena extending to distances of about 10 AU downstream from the planet. These measurements also raise the possibility that at times comets may have tail-associated phenomena extending downstream from the visible tail.

The 15 kW sub e (nominal) solar thermal electric power conversion concept definition study: Steam Rankine turbine system

A study to define the performance and cost characteristics of a solar powered, steam Rankine turbine system located at the focal point of a solar concentrator is presented. A two stage re-entry turbine with reheat between stages, which has an efficiency of 27% at a turbine inlet temperature of 732 C was used. System efficiency was defined as 60 Hertz electrical output divided by absorbed thermal input in the working fluid. Mass production costs were found to be approximately 364 dollars/KW.

Study and evaluation of impulse mass spectrometers for ion analysis in the D and E regions of the ionosphere

Theoretical and numerical analyses were made of planar, cylindrical and spherical electrode time-of-flight mass spectrometers in order to optimize their operating conditions. A numerical analysis of potential barrier gating in time-of-flight spectrometers was also made. The results were used in the design of several small mass spectrometers. These were constructed and tested in a laboratory space simulator. Detailed experimental studies of a miniature cylindrical electrode time of flight mass spectrometer and of a miniature hemispherical electrode time of flight mass spectrometer were made. The extremely high sensitivity of these instruments and their ability to operate at D region pressures with an open source make them ideal instruments for D region ion composition measurements.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Initial evaluation tests of General Electric Company, 6.0 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium spacecraft cells for the GOES-D, E and F satellite program

The tests are to insure that all cells put into the life cycle program are of high quality by the screening of cells found to have electrolyte leakage, internal shorts, low capacity, or inability of any cell to recover its open-circuit voltage above 1.150 volts during the internal short test. Test limits specify those values at which a cell is to be terminated from charge or discharge. Requirements are referenced to normally expected values based on past performance of aerospace nickel-cadmium cells with demonstrated life characteristics. Recommendations for the improvement of the manufacturing processes are presented.

Coal gasification systems engineering and analysis. Appendix E: Cost estimation and economic evaluation methodology

The cost estimation and economic evaluation methodologies presented are consistent with industry practice for assessing capital investment requirements and operating costs of coal conversion systems. All values stated are based on January, 1980 dollars with appropriate recognition of the time value of money. Evaluation of project economic feasibility can be considered a two step process (subject to considerable refinement). First, the costs of the project must be quantified and second, the price at which the product can be manufacturd must be determined. These two major categories are discussed. The summary of methodology is divided into five parts: (1) systems costs, (2)instant plant costs, (3) annual operating costs, (4) escalation and discounting process, and (5) product pricing.

Appendix E: Research papers. Analysis of landfills with historic airphotos

The nature of landfill-related information that can be derived from existing, or historic, aerial photographs, is reviewed. This information can be used for conducting temporal assessments of landfill existence, land use and land cover, and the physical environment. As such, analysis of low cost, readily available aerial photographs can provide important, objective input to landfill inventories, assessing contamination or health hazards, planning corrective measures, planning waste collection and facilities, and developing on inactive landfills.

Appendix E: Research papers. Manual versus digital LANDSAT analysis for modeling river flooding

The comparative value of manual versus digital image analysis for determining flood boundaries is being examined in a study of the use of LANDSAT data for modeling flooding of the Black River, in northern New York. The work is an extension of an earlier study in which Black River flooding was assessed through visually interpreted, multi-date LANDSAT band 7 images. Based on the results to date, it appears that neither color-additive viewing nor digital analysis of LANDSAT data provide improvement in accuracy over visual analysis of band 7 images, for delineating the boundaries of flood-affected areas.

Appendix E: Research papers. Use of remote sensing in landscape stratification for environmental impact assessment

A refinement to the matrix approach to environmental impact assessment is to use landscape units in place of separate environmental elements in the analysis. Landscape units can be delineated by integrating remotely sensed data and available single-factor data. A remote sensing approach to landscape stratification is described and the conditions under which it is superior to other approaches that require single-factor maps are indicated. Flowcharts show the steps necessary to develop classification criteria, delineate units and a map legend, and use the landscape units in impact assessment. Application of the approach to assessing impacts of a transmission line in Montana is presented to illustrate the method.

Evaluation of automated decisionmaking methodologies and development of an integrated robotic system simulation. Volume 2, Part 2: Appendixes B, C, D and E

The derivation of the equations is presented, the rate control algorithm described, and simulation methodologies summarized. A set of dynamics equations that can be used recursively to calculate forces and torques acting at the joints of an n link manipulator given the manipulator joint rates are derived. The equations are valid for any n link manipulator system with any kind of joints connected in any sequence. The equations of motion for the class of manipulators consisting of n rigid links interconnected by rotary joints are derived. A technique is outlined for reducing the system of equations to eliminate contraint torques. The linearized dynamics equations for an n link manipulator system are derived. The general n link linearized equations are then applied to a two link configuration. The coordinated rate control algorithm used to compute individual joint rates when given end effector rates is described. A short discussion of simulation methodologies is presented.

Study of the post-flare loops on 29 July 1973. IV - Revision of T and n sub e values and comparison with the flare of 21 May 1980

Revised temperature and density estimates are provided in a synthesis of previous studies of the two-ribbon solar flare of July 29, 1973 and results are compared with observations of a similar event by the Solar Maximum Mission on May 21, 1980. Photographs taken through X ray filters permitted determination of the spatial distribution of temperature and density in the loop system and variations over time. The entire growth process of the flare is detailed, including the magnetic field configurations and the enlargement of the Halpha flare ribbon separation distance. The temperature is revised to 8.8 million K during maximum soft X ray emission and 6.8 million K at the appearance of the last Halpha loops. The 1973 flare is noted to have occurred in an old, decaying spotless region, producing higher loops at lower density than the 1980 flare, which displayed ribbons imbedded in a sunspot group.
