The binary Zintl phase Ba 16 Sb 11 has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Detailed studies via single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods indicate that although Ba 16 Sb 11 appears to crystallize in the tetragonal Ca 16 Sb 11 structure type (space group $P\bar{4}2_1$m with a=13.5647(9) Å, c=12.4124(12)Å, Z=2, R 1 = 3.14%; wR 2 = 4.77%), there exists an extensive structural disorder. Some Ba 16 Sb 11 crystals were found to be monoclinic and the structure was solved and refined in space group P2 1 (a=18.3929(12) Å, b=13.5233(8) Å, c=18.3978(12) Å, β=94.6600(10)°; Z=4, R 1 =5.84 %; wR 2 =9.58 %). The latter corresponds to a 2-fold superstructure of the tetragonal one, which provides a disorder-free structural model. In both descriptions, the disordered tetragonal and the ordered monoclinic superstructure, the basic building units that make up the structure of this Ba-rich compound are pairs of face-shared square antiprisms of Ba atoms, which are centered by Sb atoms. The dimerized antiprisms are linked into parallel chains via square prisms of Ba atoms, which are also centered by Sb atoms. The Zintl concept can be applied in a straightforward manner and as result, the structure of Ba 32 Sb 22 (=2×Ba 16 Sb 11 ) can be rationalized as (Ba 2+ ) 32 (Sb 3– ) 20 [Sb 2 ] 4– . Notably, the partitioning of the valence electrons is done taking into an account the homoatomic Sb–Sb contacts (d=3.01 Å), which can be clearly distinguished in the lower symmetry space group. Electronic structure calculations of Ba 16 Sb 11 are in good accordance with the Zintl rationalization and predict a semiconductor with a band gap of 0.77 eV.

Externally stimulated antiferroelectric-ferroelectric (AFE-FE) transition makes AFE materials attractive for many applications ranging from energy storage to sensing. This transition-mediated macroscopic electrical characteristics have been extensively investigated, yet the underlying structural evolution remains poorly understood. Herein, we study the local- and long-range structural evolutions in the Nb-doped Pb(Zr,Sn,Ti)O 3 perovskites by in-situ X-ray total scattering and diffraction, which show three different types of AFE-FE transitions. The evolution of long-range structure from diffraction and local structure identified by atomic pair distribution function (PDF) are consistent well with the phase transition behavior indicated by macroscopic polarization/strain measurements, while discrepancies exist. Interestingly, frequently employed long-range structure picture that the uniform AFE pseudo-tetragonal to FE rhombohedral transformation is insufficient to understand the distinct composition-dependent AFE-FE transition behaviours. Instead, the reversibility of this transition correlates with the chemically sensitive local atomic displacements revealed by newly developed in-situ PDF. The critical electric field of transition is associated with the local structural differences between the AFE and FE state. The macroscopic electrostrains can be well estimated by the phase transition associated lattice strain and domain alignment from in-situ synchrotron XRD data, while the local strains calculated from in-situ PDFs are found to be much lower. Finally, these results provide a fresh insight into the AFE-FE transition, and advance the understanding of structure-property relationships in AFE materials.

In this work, we present a detailed implementation and validation of the droplet modeling framework proposed by Dahms and Oefelein (2016) into the engine commercial CFD software CONVERGE using the User Defined Function (UDF) interface. The model accounts for the nonlinear deformation and oscillation experienced by liquid spray droplet injected into high pressure and temperature. Lagrangian spray simulations of Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray A are performed. Model validation against standard experimental measurements of liquid velocity, vapor mixture fraction is conducted. To perform more rigorous model validation, new experimental measurements based on Diffused Back Illumination (DBI) are introduced. The new measurements are processed for Projected Liquid Volume (PLV), which offers as close as possible one-to-one model validation for liquid penetration while offering new insights into the spray physics. Comparison with a One-D model based on adiabatic mixing theory by Siebers (1999) and Desantes et al. (2007) are also conducted. Through these model validation exercises, it is shown that the new framework improves liquid-phase penetration predictions, following a tendency for enhanced evaporation, compared to the standard approach for both Reynolds Average Navier Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Additionally, at the liquid length, maximum mixture fraction values predicted by the new approach are in good agreement those of an adiabatic mixing model. Qualitative analysis of the spray behaviors during the early stage of the injection process reveals that the proposed framework predicts significant increase in droplet evaporation rate with lower drop drag compared to the current standard approach.
