NRAP Recommended Practices for Containment Assurance and Leakage Risk Quantification

This report presents recommendations for quantitatively assessing and managing leakage risk and effective containment assurance at geologic carbon storage (GCS) sites, amidst uncertainty in site characteristics and performance. These recommended practices are a product of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management’s National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP)—a multi-year collaborative research effort of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, National Energy Technology Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. These recommended practices are organized as a set of conceptual workflows that correspond with the stages of the GCS project lifecycle. They consider aspects of site characterization, quantification of potential leakage, assessing the spatial extent of potential environmental impacts, optimizing monitoring design for detection of potential leakage, evaluation of concordance between monitored and forecasted reservoir response, assessing conformance with expected/accepted performance, and determination of the timeline over which risk of impactful leakage can be expected to abate. These conceptual workflows are intended to aid stakeholders in making risk management decisions at GCS sites and to support development of sound, risk-based justifications for characterizing the subsurface, defining area of potential leakage impact, designing site monitoring plans, selecting leakage risk management/mitigation alternatives, and estimating site closure timelines.

Functionalization of nitrogen vacancy-containing nanodiamonds with a metal-organic framework for quantum sensing applications

Nitrogen vacancy (NV)-containing nanodiamonds (NDs) are an important material in applications such as biological imaging, catalysis, and, in particular, quantum sensing. Careful manipulation of the surface coating on NV NDs is essential for both enhancing quantum sensor performance and for tuning selectivity towards specific sensing targets. Here, we demonstrate a simple synthetic approach for functionalizing NV NDs with the zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) metal–organic framework (MOF), providing a well-ordered, porous scaffold for immobilizing target analytes near the NV ND surface. The composites were structurally characterized by x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and these results were all consistent with NV NDs fully encapsulated by ZIF-8. Critically, the luminescent properties of the NV NDs, which are vital for quantum sensing experiments such as optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), are unchanged by the MOF coating. Moreover, spin relaxometry experiments indicate that the ZIF-8 coating significantly enhances the NV ND spin longitudinal relaxation time T1, a critical quantum parameter for sensing applications. Given the tremendous structural diversity of MOFs, the NV ND@MOF composites are an exciting material class with exciting implications for the development of high-performance quantum sensors.

Gas-Phase Oxidation Mechanisms of Nitrogen-Containing Organic Compounds

Nitrogen-containing organic molecules play essential roles in nearly every aspect of chemistry. The importance of these species within gas-phase chemistry has increased in recent years, due to their emissions from wildfires, crude biofuels, ammonia combustion, and CO 2 capture facilities. However, there is a lack of detailed relevant mechanistic and kinetic studies of N-compounds, resulting in poor representation of these pathways within chemical models. In this report, we detail our exploration of the gas-phase oxidation mechanisms of pyrrole, imidazole, pyrrolidine, methylamine, and dimethylamine, done by employing multiplexed VUV photoionization mass spectrometry coupled with KinBot, a computational tool that automatically explores multi-well potential energy surfaces. Overall, we vastly expanded the known gas-phase oxidation mechanisms and chemical kinetics of these species. This work will improve the accuracy and completeness of atmospheric and combustion chemistry models, ultimately leading to better-informed decision-makers in the energy and environmental sectors.

Metallurgical Analysis and Forward Modeling of Weld Distortion in SMR Containment Vessels

This work aimed to apply Sandia’s expertise in metallurgy and modeling to enable the use of hybrid laser arc welding for building nuclear reactor containment structures, via a collaboration with Holtec International. Experimental observations were coupled with finite element analysis to resolve microstructure development, mechanical properties, distortion, and residual stress in welds relevant to the production of the Holtec SMR-160. High residual stresses were observed in welds that were not subjected to preheat. Meanwhile, the microstructure of the welds generally exhibited a narrow heat affected zone relative to conventional arc welds. FEA appeared to be effective in simulating the thermal/mechanical conditions that occur during hybrid laser arc welding of simplified and instrumented test welds. Subsequently, FEA was used to perform sensitivity analyses for various weld geometries that would be prohibitively costly to assess with physical experiments. Insights from the study were used to inform Holtec’s welding process, and successful production welds were performed in 2025.

Studies for the selection of fully contained muon neutrino CC events in the ICARUS T600 detector at Fermilab

The ICARUS T600 LAr-TPC detector has started its new physics runs in June 2022 at Fermilab within the SBN program. This detector is recording neutrino interactions from the Booster BNB neutrino beam in order to definitively clarify the open questions related to the possible existence of sterile neutrinos, as suggested by numerous observed experimental anomalies. In addition the neutrinos events recorded from the NuMI off-axis beam are under study in order to perform neutrino-Argon cross section measurements. At Fermilab, ICARUS is facing a challenging experimental condition: the detector is presently installed essentially at Earth surface where cosmic ray particles can become a serious source of background for the neutrino event search. This condition makes it necessary to deploy suitable automatic tools for the identification, selection, and measurement of the neutrino events among the millions of events triggered by cosmics. In this contribution, two automatic selection procedures devoted to the identification of fully contained muon neutrino interactions in the BNB neutrino beam will be presented, together with the first results of their application on simulated and on recently recorded events in the T600 detector.

Studying f-Electron Contributions in Thorium and Uranium Containing Molecules

The pure rotational spectra of several actinide-containing compounds have been improved upon and, in two cases, been recorded for the first time. The diatomic molecules HfS and ThS have been studied in their ground electronic states but high vibrationally excited states. The results have yielded very accurate locations of the minima of the potential energy curves. The asymmetric molecules OThS and UO2S have been prepared by laser ablation synthesis and their pure rotational spectra recorded for the first time. Precise information pertinent to the geometric and electronic structure of these molecules has been obtained and is compared with other, newly recorded and related species such as OCeS.

Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration

This report presents the research, design, and implementation of a Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration, conducted during my internship assignment. The project focused on developing a modular signal processing sys- tem capable of performing baseline correction, droop compensation, and real- time data communication for beam diagnostic signals. Using Redis as a message broker and configuration manager, the system ensures modularity, scalability, and efficient inter-process communication. Signal correction algorithms, such as Asymmetric Least Squares (ALS) baseline smoothing and a numerical droop correction approach, were implemented and tested using Linac beam data. The results confirm that this system improves signal fidelity and supports real-time analysis requirements, offering valuable contributions to the field of beam instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

Development of Magnesium Borane Containing Solutions of Furans and Pyrroles as Reversible Liquid Hydrogen Carriers (Final Technical Report)

The objective of this project was the development of a two-way liquid hydrogen carrier having a greater energy efficiency and lower delivery costs than either existing hydrogen carriers or conventional compressed H 2 gas transport technology. It was hypothesized that a hydrogen carrier consisting of solutions of furans and pyrroles containing Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer complex catalyst, would have more than twice the volumetric available hydrogen density of the conventional two-way liquid hydrogen carrier, methylcyclohexane. Most notably the envisioned liquid hydrogen carrier would: 1) maintain high product selectivity through multiple cycles of dehydrogenation and hydrogenation; and 2) undergo rapid dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation. The project was specifically aimed at the demonstration of at least one LOHC solution of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer catalyst that releases ≥ 50 g H 2 /L at ≤ 200 °C upon dehydrogenation and undergoes ≥ 25% rehydrogenation under 100 atm of H 2 at ≤ 200 °C.
