Connecting Nuclear Security to International Frameworks on Gender and Security

The international community is slowly beginning to recognize the intersections between the law and policy on international security – particularly arms control, non-proliferation, and disarmament – and the body of human rights law that addresses gender equality. Notably absent from this discussion is the field of nuclear security. Despite its historical underpinnings as an inherently domestic activity, nuclear security is thoroughly grounded in international treaty law. Yet, nuclear security is often overlooked in the international security context and has not been well situated with international instruments that address gender equality. We argue that gender equality in nuclear security should be understood as an important component of broader efforts to achieve equal opportunities for women in work and critical to ensuring women are included in conflict prevention efforts. Linking nuclear security to broader international efforts to increase gender equality in security and conflict prevention will provide a clearer structure and framework for gender equality initiatives in the nuclear security field. This is critically important given that estimates indicate that women comprise only twenty percent of the nuclear security workforce. Moreover, situating nuclear security in a broader international legal framework will simultaneously help states meet their gender equality commitments emanating from other instruments. This paper will first analyze the relationship between nuclear security and broader international security efforts, in particular arms control treaties and non-proliferation regimes. It will then survey the relevant international and regional frameworks for gender equality, particularly those that have applicability in the security context. This paper will next explore the relationship between nuclear security and these frameworks on gender. We find that some instruments provide support for gender equality initiatives in nuclear security because of their mandate to states to provide structural gender equality, and others are particularly relevant where they call for women's participation in conflict prevention. This paper concludes with recommendations to states that are concerned about the underrepresentation of women in nuclear security.

Monolithically-integrated AC switch having JBSFETs therein with commonly-connected drain and cathode electrodes

A monolithically-integrated AC switch includes a semiconductor substrate having first and second insulated-gate field effect transistors therein, which contain first and second spaced-apart and independently-controllable source terminals extending adjacent a first surface of the semiconductor substrate, yet share a common drain electrode extending adjacent a second surface of the semiconductor substrate. According to some of these embodiments of the invention, the first and second insulated-gate field effect transistors include respective first and second independently-controllable gate electrodes, which extend adjacent the first surface. The first and second insulated-gate field effect transistors may be configured as first and second vertical power MOSFETs, respectively. The semiconductor substrate may also include at least one edge termination region therein, which extends between the first and second vertical power MOSFETs.

Real time trajectory optimization for hybrid energy management utilizing connected information technologies

The disclosure is directed to solving a full trajectory optimization problem in real-time for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) such that future driving conditions and energy usage may be fully considered in determining optimal engine energy usage and battery energy usage in real-time during a trip. An electronic control unit of the HEV may be configured to: receive route information for a route to be driven by the HEV; and after receiving the route information, iterating the operations of: measuring a current state of charge (SOC) of the battery; using at least the measured SOC and an initial co-state value stored in a memory, performing a process to iteratively update the co-state value to obtain an updated co-state value; using at least the updated co-state value, computing an updated control value; and applying the updated control value to control a usage of the battery and the internal combustion engine.

Electronic assembly with a direct current bus connection

A folded outer tab comprises a first outer dielectric layer and a second outer dielectric layer that contact or overlie an outer terminal, where the outer terminal is associated with a first polarity of the DC bus. A bent inner tab comprises a first inner dielectric layer and a second inner dielectric layer that contact or overlie an inner terminal, where the inner terminal is associated with a second polarity of the DC bus that is opposite the first polarity. The folded outer tab and the bent inner tab comprise electrically conductive faces, of opposite polarities, formed of exposed portions of the outer terminal and the inner terminal.

DIS physics at the EIC and LHeC and connections to the future LHC and $\nu$A programs

Deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS) stands to enter a golden age with the prospect of precision programs at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and Large Hadron-electron Collider (LHeC). While these programs will be of considerable importance to resolving longstanding issues in (non)perturbative QCD as well as hadronic and nuclear structure, they will also have valuable implications for a wider range of physics at the Energy and Intensity Frontiers, including at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and future $\nu A$ facilities. In this plenary contribution, we highlight a number of salient examples of the potential HEP impact from the complementary EIC and LHeC programs drawn from their respective Yellow Report and Whitepaper. Interested readers are encouraged to consult the extensive studies and literature from which these examples are taken for more detail.

Connected and automated vehicles, driving systems, and control logic for info-rich eco-autonomous driving

A method for controlling automated driving operations of a vehicle includes determining vehicle origin and destination data, and generating a graphical representation of a road network with multiple candidate routes between the vehicle's origin and destination. Road-level data, including speed, turn angle, and/or gradient data, is received for each candidate route, and respective total energy uses are estimated for the vehicle to traverse across the candidate routes. Multiple candidate driving strategies, each having respective speed and acceleration profiles, are determined for the candidate route with the lowest estimated total energy use. An optimal candidate driving strategy is selected through a cost evaluation of the associated speed and acceleration profiles and forward movement simulations of the vehicle over a prediction horizon. Command signals are transmitted to the vehicle's steering and/or powertrain systems to execute control operations based on the optimal driving strategy and the candidate route with the lowest energy use.
