Polaronic Quasiparticles in the Valence-Transition Compound TmSe 1−𝑥⁢ Te 𝑥

Exotic quasiparticle states have been proposed in mixed-valent compounds exhibiting valence transitions. However, clear spectroscopic evidence identifying these states has remained elusive. Here, using synchrotron-based hard x-ray and extreme ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, we have probed the Tm 3⁢𝑑 and 4⁢𝑓 emissions in TmSe 1−𝑥 ⁢Te 𝑥 , where a Te concentration-dependent semimetal–insulator transition occurs alongside the valence transition. Our photoemission results, which are characteristic of the bulk, track this combined transition across the critical concentration (𝑥 𝑐 = 0.29). Notably, our results reveal a noninteger valence for the insulating phase and a novel quasiparticle excitation in the semimetallic phase: a Holstein polaron that extends beyond the standard periodic Anderson model.

Observation of Unprecedented Fractional Magnetization Plateaus in a New Shastry-Sutherland Ising Compound

Geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, such as those based on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL), offer a rich playground for exploring unconventional magnetic states. The delicate balance between competing interactions in these systems leads to the emergence of novel phases. We present the characterization of Er 2 ⁢Be 2⁢ GeO 7 , an SSL compound with Er 3+ ions forming orthogonal dimers separated by nonmagnetic layers whose structure is invariant under the 𝑃⁢$\bar{4}21$⁢𝑚 space group. Neutron scattering reveals an antiferromagnetic dimer structure at zero field, typical of Ising spins on that lattice and consistent with the anisotropic magnetization observed. However, magnetization measurements exhibit fractional plateaus at 1/4 and 1/2 of saturation, in contrast to the expected 1/3 plateau of the SSL Ising model. By comparing the energy of candidate states with ground-state lower bounds we show that this behavior requires spatially anisotropic interactions, leading to an anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland Ising model symmetric under the 𝐶⁢𝑚⁢𝑚⁢2 space group. This anisotropy is consistent with the small orthorhombic distortion observed with single-crystal neutron diffraction. The other properties, including thermodynamics, which have been investigated theoretically using tensor networks, point to small residual interactions, potentially due to further couplings and quantum fluctuations. This study highlights Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢GeO 7 as a promising platform for investigating exotic magnetic phenomena.

Manipulating Cu vacancy in Yb triangular lattice Materials: Investigating the quantum disordered compound CuYbSe 2 and spin glass Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2

Yb-based triangular lattice materials have attracted significant attention due to their potential for hosting exotic magnetic quantum states. In this paper, we report the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of two Yb triangular lattice compounds with vacancy disorder at nonmagnetic Cu sites: CuYbSe 2 and Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 . Single-crystal x-ray diffraction determines notable Cu-site vacancies in both materials. Unlike a single Cu site with 0.5 occupancy in CuYbSe 2 , Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 only presents 27% vacancies on one of three Cu sites. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between Yb 3+ ions. The effective magnetic moment is consistent with an effective spin-1/2 state of Yb 3+ . CuYbSe 2 exhibits strong magnetic anisotropy between in-plane and out-of-plane directions with the estimated exchange interactions 𝐽 𝑎 /𝑘 B = 6.48 K and 𝐽 𝑐 /𝑘 B = 2.55 K. No magnetic ordering is observed down to 0.4 K, supporting its quantum disordered ground state and candidacy as a quantum spin liquid. In contrast, Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 shows clear evidence of spin freezing at 4.5 K in both magnetization and heat capacity data, indicating a spin glass state. The field-induced magnetic orders are found in CuYbSe 2 . These results highlight the critical role of structural vacancies in perturbing Yb-based triangular lattices. In conclusion, we demonstrate that while the intrinsic Yb triangular lattices are comparable, the presence of Cu vacancies can fundamentally alter the magnetic ground state—tuning the system between quantum disordered and spin glass behavior.

Robust block magnetism in the spin ladder compound BaFe 2 Se 3 under hydrostatic pressure

The majority of the iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) exhibit a two-dimensional square lattice structure. Recent reports of pressure-induced superconductivity in the spin-ladder system, BaFe 2 X 3 (X=S, Se), introduce a quasi-one-dimensional prototype and an insulating parent compound to the FeSCs. In this work, we report x-ray, neutron diffraction, and muon spin relaxation experiments on BaFe 2 Se 3 under hydrostatic pressure to investigate its magnetic and structural properties across the pressure-temperature phase diagram. A structural phase transition was found at a pressure of 3.7(3) GPa. Neutron diffraction measurements at 6.8(3) GPa and 120 K show that the block magnetism persists even at these high pressures. A steady increase and then fast drop of the magnetic transition temperature T N and greatly reduced moment above the pressure P s indicate potentially rich and competing phases close to the superconducting phase in this ladder system.

Exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect due to anticrossing of spin-split bands in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound TbPtBi

We have investigated the magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle reaching ~0.68–0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the Weyl points but that it is driven by the large net Berry curvature produced by the anticrossing of spin-split bands near the Fermi level in TbPtBi.

Spin-coupling topology in the copper hexamer compounds A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 ( A =Na, K)

The compounds A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A=Na,K) are characterized by copper hexamers that are weakly coupled to realize antiferromagnetic order below TN≈3K. They constitute quantum spin systems with S=1 triplet ground states. In this work, we investigated the energy-level splittings of the copper hexamers by inelastic neutron scattering experiments covering the entire range of the magnetic excitation spectra. Additionally, the observed transitions are governed by very unusual selection rules that we ascribe to the underlying spin-coupling topology. This is rationalized by model calculations that allow an unambiguous interpretation of the magnetic excitations concerning both the peak assignments and the nature of the spin-coupling parameters.

Néel-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic field–temperature phase diagram in the spin-1/2 rare-earth honeycomb compound YbCl 3

Most of the searches for Kitaev materials deal with 4 d / 5 d magnets with spin-orbit-coupled J = 1 / 2 local moments such as iridates and α - RuCl 3 . Here we propose the monoclinic YbCl 3 with a Yb 3 + honeycomb lattice for the exploration of Kitaev physics. We perform thermodynamic, a c susceptibility, angle-dependent magnetic torque, and neutron diffraction measurements on YbCl 3 single crystal. We find that the Yb 3 + ion exhibits a Kramers doublet ground state that gives rise to an effective spin J eff = 1 / 2 local moment. Additionally, the compound exhibits short-range magnetic order below 1.20 K, followed by a long-range Néel-type antiferromagnetic order at 0.60 K, below which the ordered Yb 3 + spins lie in the a c plane with an angle of 16(11) ° away from the a axis. These orders can be suppressed by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields at around 6 and 10 T, respectively. Moreover, the Néel temperature varies nonmonotonically under the out-of-plane magnetic fields, suggesting a reduced spin dimensionality. Finally, together with the strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy and the reduced order moment 0.8(1) μ B at 0.25 K, all indicate that YbCl 3 could be a two-dimensional spin system to proximate the Kitaev physics.

Exotic bonding interactions and coexistence of chemically distinct periodic lattice distortions in the charge density wave compound TaTe2

The superstructure of TaTe 2 is examined by total high-energy x-ray scattering and large-scale structure modeling over a broad temperature range. At room temperature, it features double zigzag chains of Ta atoms exhibiting metallic bonding. The chains are sandwiched between planes of weakly interacting Te atoms. Below 170 K, the chains appear broken to “butterflylike” clusters and single zigzag chains of covalently bonded Te atoms emerge while Ta-Te interactions remain largely ionic. This is a rare example of a charge density wave compound stabilized by bonding that is a mix of covalent, ionic, and metallic character giving rise to chemically distinct periodic lattice distortions. We argue that the formation of periodic lattice distortions in the Te sublattice in addition to those in the Ta sublattice favors charge delocalization, which may explain the unusually diminished resistivity and increased magnetic susceptibility exhibited by the low-temperature charge density wave phase of TaTe 2 . The effect may be common for 5d transition metal chalcogenides containing Te because of the extended electronic orbitals of the constituent atoms.

Flat bands in the CoSn-type compounds

Quantum interference on the kagome lattice generates electronic bands with narrow bandwidth, called flat bands. Crystal structures incorporating this lattice can host strong electron correlations with nonstandard ingredients, but only if these bands lie at the Fermi level. In the six compounds with the CoSn structure type (FeGe, FeSn, CoSn, NiIn, RhPb, and PtTl) the transition metals form a kagome lattice. The two iron variants are robust antiferromagnets so we focus on the latter four and investigate their thermodynamic and transport properties. We consider these results and calculated band structures to locate and characterize the flat bands in these materials. Finally, we propose that CoSn and RhPb deserve the community's attention for exploring flat-band physics.

Frustrated spin-1/2 dimer compound K 2 Co 2 ( Se O 3 ) 3 with easy-axis anisotropy

Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific-heat measurements under both in-plane and out-of-plane field on K 2 Co 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 single crystals are reported. The Co dimers in this compound, which are made from face-sharing effective spin-1/2 CoO 6 octahedra, sit on the corners of a geometrically frustrating triangular planar lattice. No long-range magnetic ordering is found down to 0.35 K, which, together with the large negative Curie-Weiss temperature obtained from fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, indicates that the system is magnetically frustrated. Analysis of the field and orientation dependence of the magnetic and thermodynamic properties suggests the presence of an easy-axis anisotropy. Furthermore, the magnetic fluctuations present due to geometric frustration are more resistant to an in-plane field than a perpendicular-to-plane field.

Topological Hall effect and magnetic states in the Nowotny chimney ladder compound Cr 11 Ge 19

In this report, we have investigated the magnetic and charge transport properties of single crystals of the Nowotny chimney ladder compound Cr 11 Ge 19 and mapped out a comprehensive phase diagram reflecting the complicated interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, the dipolar interaction, and the magnetic anisotropy. We have identified a set of interesting magnetic phases and attributed a finite topological Hall effect to the recently discovered biskyrmion phase. These data also suggest the existence of an antiskyrmion state at finite fields for temperatures just below the magnetic ordering temperature T c as indicated by a distinct change in sign of the topological Hall effect. Above T c , we discovered a region of enhanced magnetic response corresponding to a disordered phase likely existing near the ferromagnetic critical point under small magnetic fields. Strong spin chirality fluctuations are demonstrated by the large value of the topological Hall resistivity persisting up to 1 T, which is most likely due to the existence of the DM interaction. We argue that changes to the topological Hall effect correspond to different topological spin textures that are controlled by magnetic dipolar and DM interactions that vary in importance with temperature

Electronic correlations in the semiconducting half-Heusler compound FeVSb

Electronic correlations are crucial to the low-energy physics of metallic systems with localized d and f states; however, their effect on band insulators and semiconductors is typically negligible. Here, we measure the electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound FeVSb, a band insulator with a filled shell configuration of 18 valence electrons per formula unit ( s 2 p 6 d 10 ). Additionally, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals a mass renormalization of m * / m bare = 1.4 , where m * is the measured effective mass and m bare is the mass from density functional theory calculations with no added on-site Coulomb repulsion. Our measurements are in quantitative agreement with dynamical mean-field theory calculations, highlighting the many-body origin of the mass renormalization. This mass renormalization lies in dramatic contrast to other filled shell intermetallics, including the thermoelectric materials CoTiSb and NiTiSn, and has a similar origin to that in FeSi, where Hund's coupling induced fluctuations across the gap can explain a dynamical self-energy and correlations. Our work calls for a rethinking of the role of correlations and Hund's coupling in intermetallic band insulators.

Canted antiferromagnetic order and spin dynamics in the honeycomb-lattice compound Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9

Here, single-crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, bulk magnetization measurements, and first-principles calculations are used to investigate the magnetic properties of the honeycomb lattice Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 . While the R ln 2 magnetic contribution to the low-temperature entropy indicates a J eff = 1 / 2 moment for the lowest-energy crystal-field doublet, the Tb 3 + ions form a canted antiferromagnetic structure below 12.5 K. Due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the Tb moments in the a b plane are slightly canted towards b with a canted moment of 1.22 μ B per formula unit. A minimal x x z spin Hamiltonian is used to simultaneously fit the spin-wave frequencies along the high-symmetry directions and the field dependence of the magnetization along the three crystallographic axes. Long-range magnetic interactions for both in-plane and out-of-plane couplings up to the second nearest neighbors are needed to account for the observed static and dynamic properties. The z component of the exchange interactions between Tb moments is larger than the x and y components. This compound also exhibits bond-dependent exchange with negligible nearest-neighbor exchange coupling between moments parallel and perpendicular to the 4 f orbitals. Despite the J eff = 1 / 2 moments, the spin Hamiltonian is denominated by a large in-plane anisotropy K z ~ – 1 meV . DFT calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state and the substantial interplane coupling at larger Tb-Tb distances.

$A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.

Beyond single tetrahedron physics of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11

Recently, a new class of quantum magnets, the so-called breathing pyrochlore spin systems, have attracted much attention due to their potential to host exotic emergent phenomena. Here, we present magnetometry, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, muon-spin relaxation, and polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11 . We interpret these results using a simplified toy model and provide insight into the low-energy physics of this system beyond the single tetrahedron physics proposed previously.

Gapless spinons and a field-induced soliton gap in the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3

Here, we report a detailed study of the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of a spin-liquid candidate: the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 . The specific heat shows no anomaly associated with a magnetic transition at low temperatures down to T ~ 180 mK in zero magnetic field. We observe a large linear-in-T contribution to the specific heat γT, γ = 98 (1) mJ / mol K 2 , at low temperatures, indicative of the presence of fermionic excitations despite the Mott insulating state. The low-T specific heat is strongly suppressed by applied magnetic fields H, which induce an energy gap, Δ(H), in the spin-excitation spectrum. We use the four-component relativistic density-functional theory (DFT) to calculate the magnetic interactions, including the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange, which causes an effective staggered field acting on one copper sublattice. The magnitude and field dependence of the field-induced gap, Δ (H) ∝ H 2/3 , are accurately predicted by the soliton mass calculated from the sine-Gordon model of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with all parameters determined by our DFT calculations. Thus our experiment and calculations are entirely consistent with a model of [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 in which anisotropic magnetic exchange interactions due to Jahn-Teller distortion cause one copper sublattice to dimerize, leaving a second sublattice of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic chains. We also show that this model quantitatively accounts for the measured temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility. Thus [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 is a canonical example of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and not a resonating-valence-bond quantum spin liquid, as previously proposed.

Noncoplanar magnetic order in the breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2⁢ (NO 3 )

We report a comprehensive study investigating the magnetic ordering properties of the quasi-two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 ⁢(NO 3 ) using neutron diffraction and thermodynamic measurements. A long-range magnetic order emerges below the Néel temperature, T N = 18K, characterized by a propagating vector k = (0,0,1.5). Refinement analysis reveals that the copper moments display a noncoplanar arrangement, with the c components parallelly aligned within the breathing kagome plane and antiparallelly aligned between the layers. In-plane moment components form a chiral “tail-chase” structure. The magnetic order is quickly suppressed under moderate external fields applied both within and perpendicular to the kagome plane. Potential magnetic interactions that may be associated with the noncoplanar chiral magnetic structure are discussed.

Origin of metal-insulator transitions in the parent compounds of ruthenium-pnictide superconductors

Here we study the interplay of the structural phase transition, flat electronic band dispersion, and metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) in the parent compounds of the Ru-pnictide superconductors by using first-principles calculations. Our electron and phonon calculations reveal that Ru(P,As) undergo MIT accompanied by orthorhombic to monoclinic distortion at low temperature, but RuSb stays orthorhombic and metallic in agreement with the experimental findings. It is demonstrated that electronic correlation, as treated in DFT + U, DFT + Gutzwiller, and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), cannot induce MIT in the undistorted crystal structure. We find that, although small monoclinic distortion can remove the van Hove singularity at the Fermi level, it does not immediately gap out the Fermi surface and a large value of monoclinic distortion is necessary for a clear MIT, suggesting the possibility of an intermediate pseudogapped monoclinic metallic phase. Furthermore, we predict a light-induced two-step insulator-to-metal and structural transitions in the monoclinic phases of RuP and RuAs, which can be tested in future ultrafast pump-probe experiments as an alternative ideal playground to VO 2 .
