Outer planet atmospheric entry probes - An overview of technology readiness

Entry probe systems for characterizing, by in situ measurements, the atmospheric properties, chemical composition, and cloud structure of the planets Saturn, Uranus, and Jupiter are examined from the standpoint of unique mission requirements, associated subsystem performance, and degree of commonality of design. Past earth entry vehicles (PAET) and current planetary spacecraft (Pioneer Venus probes and Viking lander) are assessed to identify the extent of potential subsystem inheritance, as well as to establish the significant differences, in both form and function, relative to outer planet requirements. Recent research results are presented and reviewed for the most critical probe technology areas, including: science accommodation, telecommunication, and entry heating and thermal protection. Finally presented is a brief discussion of the use of decision analysis techniques for quantifying various probe heat-shield test alternatives and performance risk.

Experimental clean combustor program, phase 2

The alternate fuels investigation objective was to experimentally determine the impacts, if any, on exhaust emissions, performance, and durability characteristics of the hybrid and vorbix low pollution combustor concepts when operated on test fuels which simulate composition and property changes which might result from future broadened aviation turbine fuel specifications or use of synthetically derived crude feedstocks. Results of the program indicate a significant increase in CO and small NOX increase in emissions at idle for both combustor concepts, and an increase in THC for the vorbix concept. Minimal impact was observed on gaseous emissions at high power. The vorbix concept exhibited significant increase in exhaust smoke with increasing fuel aromatic content. Altitude stability was not affected for the vorbix combustor, but was substantially reduced for the hybrid concept. Severe carbon deposition was observed in both combustors following limited endurance testing with No. 2 home heat fuel. Liner temperature levels were insensitive to variations in aromatic content over the range of conditions investigated.

Improved black nickel coatings for flat plate solar collectors

A new black nickel formula was developed which had a solar absorptance of 0.92 and an infrared emittance (at 100 C) of less than 0.10 after 14 days at 38 C and 95 percent relative humidity. The electroplating bath and conditions were changed to obtain the more stable coating configuration. The effect of bath composition, temperature, pH, and plating current density and time on the coating composition, optical properties and durability were investigated.

Genesis of the Angra dos Reis and other achondritic meteorites

Major, minor, and trace element abundances were determined in seven Angra dos Reis samples, which included whole rocks, fassaite (clinopyroxene), olivine, and whitlockite separates, via sequential instrumental neutron activation analysis. The rare earth element abundance patterns and the trace element abundance patterns of this achondritic meteorite are discussed. A two-stage crystal-liquid fractionation model with source material containing olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxine is presented for the genesis of Angra dos Reis. Multilinear regression analysis was used to estimate possible composition and properties of the parent magmas. Angra dos Reis was compared with other achondrites, cumulate eucrites and nakhlites in particular. It is thought that the unique Angra dos Reis could not be related to those achondrites by crystal-liquid fractionation of the same parent body.

The 737 graphite composite flight spoiler flight service evaluation

The flight service experience of 110 graphite epoxy spoilers on 737 transport aircraft was reviewed as well as ground based environmental exposure of graphite epoxy material specimens for the period from April 1976 through April 1977. Several spoilers were installed on each of 27 aircraft representing seven major airlines operating throughout the world. A flight service evaluation program of at least 5 years is under way. As of April 30, 1977, a total of 766,938 spoiler flight hours and 1,168,090 spoiler landings were accumulated by the fleet. Based on visual ultrasonic, and destructive testing, there was no evidence of moisture migration into the honeycomb core and no core corrosion. Tests of removed spoilers and of ground based exposure specimens after the third year of service continue to indicate modest changes in composite strength properties.

Thermal environment effects on strength and impact properties of boron-aluminum composites

Thermal effects on fracture strength and impact energy were studied in 50 volume percent unidirectional composites of 143 and 203 micron boron fibers in 6061 and 1100 aluminum matrices. For 6061 matrix composites, strength was maintained to approximately 400 C in the cyclic tests and higher than 400 C in the static tests. For the 1100 matrix composites, strength degradation appeared near 260 C after cycling and higher than 260 C in static heating. This composite strength degradation is explained by a fiber degradation mechanism resulting from a boron-aluminum interface reaction. The impact energy absorption degraded significantly only above 400 C for both matrix alloys. Thus, while impact loss for the 6061 composite correlates with the fiber strength loss, other energy absorption processes appear to extend the impact resistance of the 1100 matrix composites to temperatures beyond where its strength is degraded. Interrupted impact tests on as-received and thermally cycled composites define the range of load over which the fibers break in the impact event.

Thermal environment effects on strength and impact properties of boron-aluminum composites

A systematic study was conducted regarding the degradation of fracture strength and impact energy in commercial B-Al composites in both static and cyclic thermal environments. The composites used in the study contained approximately 50 vol % boron fibers, unidirectionally aligned in either a 6061 Al or 1100 Al matrix. The tensile strengths of the composites after 3000 thermal cycles as a function of upper cycle temperature are presented in graphs. The temperature at which the strengths of 6061 Al matrix, B-Al composites were significantly degraded after 3000 cycles was noticeably higher than that for the 1100 Al matrix composites. Static heating at 420 C resulted in no significant strength degradation for the 6061 Al matrix composites. In the case of 1100 matrix composites, some degradation was observed at 420 C but markedly less than in the composites cycled to 420 C.

Materials and structures technology

Materials and structures performance limitations, particularly for the hot section of the engine in which these limitations limit the life of components, are considered. Failure modes for components such as blades, vanes, and combustors and how they are affected by the environment for such components are discussed. Methods used to improve the materials used for such components are: (1) application of directional structures to turbine components for high strength at high temperatures; (2) improved coatings to increase oxidation and corrosion resistance; (3) increase strength and stiffness with reduced weight by applying higher specific properties of composite materials; and (4) cost effective processing such as near net shape powder methods applied to disks. Life prediction techniques developed to predict component life accurately in advance of service and progress in improving the intermediate and cold section components of turbine engines are covered.

The 737 graphite composite flight spoiler flight service evaluation

The flight service experience of 111 graphite-epoxy spoilers on 737 transport aircraft and related ground based enviromental exposure of graphite-epoxy material specimens is reported. Spoilers were installed on 28 aircraft representing seven major airlines operating throughout the world. Over 1,188,367 spoiler flight hours and 1,786,837 spoiler landings were accumulated by this fleet. Tests of removed spoilers and ground-based exposure specimens after the fifth year of service indicate modest changes in composite strength properties. Two incidents of trailing edge delamination with subsequent core corrosion were observed. Based on visual, ultrasonic, and destructive testing, there has been no evidence of moisture migration into the honeycomb core and no core corrosion.

Effect of High Energy Radiation on Mechanical Properties of Graphite Fiber Reinforced Composites

The flexural strength and average modulus of graphite fiber reinforced composites were tested before and after exposure to 0.5 Mev electron radiation and 1.33 Mev gamma radiation by using a three point bending test (ASTM D-790). The irradiation was conducted on vacuum treated samples. Graphite fiber/epoxy (T300/5208), graphite fiber/polyimide (C6000/PMR 15) and graphite fiber/polysulfone (C6000/P1700) composites after being irradiated with 0.5 Mev electron radiation in vacuum up to 5000 Mrad, show increases in stress and modulus of approximately 12% compared with the controls. Graphite fiber/epoxy (T300/5208 and AS/3501-6), after being irradiated with 1.33 Mev gamma radiation up to 360 Mrads, show increases in stress and modulus of approximately 6% at 167 Mrad compared with the controls. Results suggest that the graphite fiber composites studied should withstand the high energy radiation in a space environment for a considerable time, e.g., over 30 years.

Thermal inertia mapping of Mars from 60 deg S to 60 deg N

The considered region comprises 81% of the surface of Mars. Thermal inertia I is a composite surface property, which is equal to the square root of the product of three factors, including the thermal conductivity, the density, and the specific heat. I is the sole thermal parameter which governs the temperature variation of a periodically heated homogeneous surface, and, as such, is the prime intermediary between remote temperature observations and their geologic interpretation. The values for the thermal inertia found imply particulate surface materials. The variation in Martian surface thermal conductivity is about two orders of magnitude. Three large regions of low-inertia material are defined. Low-inertia material always possesses high albedo. There is a general tendency for higher-thermal-inertia surfaces to be darker but exceptions occur which may be related to a thin mantling of light dust or bonding of light material.

Indentation law for composite laminates

Static indentation tests are described for glass/epoxy and graphite/epoxy composite laminates with steel balls as the indentor. Beam specimens clamped at various spans were used for the tests. Loading, unloading, and reloading data were obtained and fitted into power laws. Results show that: (1) contact behavior is not appreciably affected by the span; (2) loading and reloading curves seem to follow the 1.5 power law; and (3) unloading curves are described quite well by a 2.5 power law. In addition, values were determined for the critical indentation, alpha sub cr which can be used to predict permanent indentations in unloading. Since alpha sub cr only depends on composite material properties, only the loading and an unloading curve are needed to establish the complete loading-unloading-reloading behavior.

The 737 graphite composite flight spoiler flight service evaluation

A flight service report was prepared which covers the flight service experience of 111 graphite epoxy spoilers on 737 transport aircraft and related ground based environmental exposure of graphite epoxy material specimens. Spoilers were installed on 28 aircraft representing seven major airlines operating throughout the world. Tests of removed spoilers after the seventh year of service continue to indicate modest changes in composite strength properties. Two spoilers were tested, one with 6 and one with 7 years of service, and both had residual strengths that fall within the original static strength scatter band. Both these units had typical service included discrepancies when tested. Based on visual, ultrasonic, and destructive inspection there continues to be no evidence of moisture migration into the honeycomb core and no core corrosion in the deployed units.

Effect of processing on Polymer/Composite structure and properties

Advances in the vitality and economic health of the field of polymer forecasting are discussed. A consistent and rational point of view which considers processing as a participant in the underlying triad of relationships which comprise materials science and engineering is outlined. This triad includes processing as it influences material structure, and ultimately properties. Methods in processing structure properties, polymer science and engineering, polymer chemistry and synthesis, structure and modification and optimization through processing, and methods of melt flow modeling in processing structure property relations of polymer were developed. Mechanical properties of composites are considered, and biomedical materials research to include polymer processing effects are studied. An analysis of the design technology of advances graphite/epoxy composites is also reported.

Remote sensing of the asteroids

Knowledge of the compositions of the asteroids is obtained by the remote sensing of reflected and emitted radiation from what are essentially star-like points of light. Since asteroids are a remnant population of planetesimals that were never accreted into the larger planets, their compositions and properties can provide insight into the nature of planetary matter in early epochs, before most of it was physically and chemically modified by geological processes within the planets. The progress made during the past decade in learning about asteroids through remote sensing is reviewed.
