Digital computer program for analyzing chugging instabilities

Program computes combustion delays, gas residence time, characteristic velocity, and other steady-state parameters required for solution of the characteristic equation. Equation is solved for critical values of injector pressure drops and chugging frequency.

Laser vibration analyzer

Instrument system uses laser and optical heterodyne receiver to measure Doppler phase shifts produced on a laser beam by the deflection of the vibrating surface of a structure under test or in operation.

A real-time statistical time-series analyzer

Device extracts average frequency of human speech and produces second, third, and fourth moments of instantaneous frequency about this average. It operates on electrical time representation of input signal, performs statistical analysis on zero-crossing of almost any signal, and does not require specialized personnel to operate it.

Graphical method for analyzing digital computer efficiency

Analysis method utilizes graph-theoretic approach for evaluating computation cost and makes logical distinction between linear graph of a computation and linear graph of a program. It applies equally well to other processes which depend on quatitative edge nomenclature and precedence relationships between edges.

Metabolic breath analyzer

Instrument measures metabolic breathing rate and dynamics of human beings in atmospheres ranging from normal air to 100 percent oxygen at ambient pressures from 14.7 to 3.0 psia. Measurements are made at rest or performing tasks up to maximum physical capacity under either zero or normal gravity.

Statistical studies in stellar rotation 2: A method of analyzing rotational coupling in double stars and an introduction to its applications

The correlation between the equatorial velocities of the components of double stars is studied from a statistical standpoint. A theory of rotational correlation is developed and discussed with regard to its applicability to existing observations. The theory is then applied to a sample of visual binaries which are the least studied for rotational coupling. Consideration of eclipsing systems and spectroscopic binaries is limited to show how the degrees of freedom in the spin parallelism problem can be reduced. The analysis lends support to the existence of synchronism in closely spaced binaries.

Determining and analyzing the strength and impact resistance of high modulus glass

An error was noticed recently in the computer program used to reduce the laboratory sonic measurements to tabulated values of Young's modulus of the bulk samples of experimental glasses. Correction of this error gave revised values for the last fifty experimental glasses prepared in this laboratory. This corrected data, when examined as input material for the calculation of Young's modulus of bulk glasses from composition by the C. J. Phillips procedure, resulted in new values for the contribution per mol of several oxides. The new value for the zinc oxide molal factor is especially significant since it is slightly greater than the factor for beryllia for the types of glasses melted in the UARL research program. This discovery provides a new tool in the search for nontoxic, i.e. without beryllia, high modulus glass fibers particularly when coupled with recent measurements that showed zinc oxide contributes significantly to increased impact strength. New glass compositions prepared in this period and the latest impact strength values measured are also included.

Determining and analyzing the strength and impact resistance of high modulus glass

A number of new glass compositions have been prepared with increased emphasis on compositions without beryllia. Glass preparations have been much more broadly based and have included the eutectic glass fields, and the mullite-rare earth glass systems. Of the new glasses, the best non-toxic composition is UARL 472 with a bulk modulus of only 18.20 million psi. A second experimental glass, UARL 417, was chosen for research in making large quantities of fiber in monofilament form. Tests of these UARL 417 epoxy resin samples in comparison to similar composites made with the DuPont organic fiber, PRD-49-1, show that the UARL composites have a compressive strength 41/2 times higher and a specific compressive strength at least 21/2 times greater. Much of the research effort attempted to answer the question of why a given glass should have an impact strength superior to other glasses. No definitive answer to the question was found.

Predicting and analyzing the thermal flux incident on test articles in a simulated space environment

The increase in importance and sophistication of thermal-vacuum testing has accentuated the problem of defining the environment to which the test article was subjected. An adequate definition of the test environment is essential to the verification of test-article thermal models. The technique used for defining the test environment at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Space Environment Simulation Laboratory and its application during a recent major thermal-vacuum testing program is discussed.
