Tuning conformational structures of imidazolium ionenes with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquid solvents
In this report the structures and conformations of imidazolium ionenes solvated in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) ([C 2 mim + ][X - ]) are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Four different ionenes poly(decylimidazolium) (PD 10 ), poly(tetraethyleneglycolimidazolium) (PE 10 ), alternating copolymer (P(ED) 5 ), and a block copolymer PE 5 D 5 are immersed in [C 2 mim + ][X - ], where [X - ] = thiocyanate [SCN - ], tetrafluoroborate [BF 4 - ], and trifluoromethanesulfonate [TfO - ]. The radius of gyration indicates that the ionene chains are more extended when immersed in [TfO - ] compared to [BF 4 - ] and [SCN - ], while the solvent accessible surface area shows that PE 10 is the most contracted ionene among all systems. The electrostatic interactions between the ionenes and the ILs are very consistent with the inherent electrostatic characteristics of the different anions, which can be quantified using the Ionic Polarity Index (IPI). The ionene configurations and dynamics strongly depend on the backbone functionality and architecture of the chain, due to the balance between the inter- and intra-molecular interactions in these systems.

Tuning the surface energy of fluorinated diamond-like carbon coatings via plasma immersion ion implantation plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane
Here, we demonstrate an environmentally friendly and scalable method to create fluorine-doped diamond-like carbon (F-DLC) coatings using plasma immersion ion implantation plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PIII-PECVD) with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. F-DLC films tend to have low wettability and good mechanical flexibility, which make them suitable for applications in biomedical devices and antibiofouling surfaces. We report on the effects of fluorine incorporation on the surface chemistry, surface energy, and morphology of these coatings, showing that our method is effective in increasing the fluorine content in the F-DLC up to 40%. We show that the addition of fluorine leads to a decrease in surface energy, which is consistent with a reduction in surface wettability.

Improving chiller performance and energy efficiency in hydrogen station operation by tuning the auxiliary cooling
In a hydrogen station that operates with direct fueling through the use of a 700 bar boost compressor, the outlet hydrogen temperature can significantly increase, stressing the chiller system. Here, this paper evaluates improvements that can be made to the auxiliary cooling system integrated with the compressor. Both theoretical modeling and experiments were performed at Cal State LA Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility. The findings suggest that adjusting the auxiliary closed-loop cooling system from 15 °C to 10 °C reduced the station energy consumption and decreased the demand on the station chiller that needed to provide –20 °C hydrogen at the hose. The overall energy consumption for a single fueling reduced by between 2.86 and 9.43% for the set of experiments conducted. After the temperature of the closed-loop cooling system was reduced by 5 °C, the boost compressor outlet temperature dropped from 46-50 °C–40 °C and consequently at the hose the hydrogen temperature declined by 3 °C. Results were scaled up with a forecast on the number of daily refueling events. With a low number of daily fuelings, the proposed set-up showed a minor influence on the overall station energy consumption. However, the benefits were more pronounced for a connector station with sales at 180 kg/day, where the energy efficiency improved by between 1.4 and 5.5%, and even more so for a higher capacity station at 360 kg/day, where the improvement was between 2.9 and 8%.
Gap junctions fine-tune ganglion cell signals to equalize response kinetics within a given electrically coupled array
Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) summate inputs and forward a spike train code to the brain in the form of either maintained spiking (sustained) or a quickly decaying brief spike burst (transient). We report diverse response transience values across the RGC population and, contrary to the conventional transient/sustained scheme, responses with intermediary characteristics are the most abundant. Pharmacological tests showed that besides GABAergic inhibition, gap junction (GJ)–mediated excitation also plays a pivotal role in shaping response transience and thus visual coding. More precisely GJs connecting RGCs to nearby amacrine and RGCs play a defining role in the process. These GJs equalize kinetic features, including the response transience of transient OFF alpha (tOFFα) RGCs across a coupled array. We propose that GJs in other coupled neuron ensembles in the brain are also critical in the harmonization of response kinetics to enhance the population code and suit a corresponding task.
Cubic to hexagonal tuning in Fe 2 Mn(Si 1– x Ge x ) Heusler alloys
Here, the competition between the stability of the cubic and hexagonal full Heusler alloys and the implications concerning their magnetic properties were systematically studied through the detailed structural and magnetic characterization of the Fe 2 Mn(Si 1– x Ge x ) system. This system was specifically chosen as the parent compositions are cubic ( x = 0) and hexagonal ( x = 1). It is found that the formation of hexagonal phases occurs for the x ≥ 0.6 samples, whereas its phase fraction monotonically increases with x until the pure hexagonal Fe 2 MnGe is formed. The change in structure results in high sensitiveness of both the saturation of magnetization ($M_S$) and Curie temperature ($T_C$) with x values, related to a strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the hexagonal phase. Both cubic and hexagonal magnetic features were qualitatively reproduced by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides an experimental and theoretical foundation for further design of Heusler systems with controlled structures and magnetic properties.
