Photoluminescence Induced by Substitutional Nitrogen in Single-Layer Tungsten Disulfide

The electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional materials can be strongly influenced by defects, some of which can find significant implementations, such as controllable doping, prolonged valley lifetime, and single-photon emissions. Here, we demonstrate that defects created by remote N 2 plasma exposure in single-layer WS 2 can induce a distinct low-energy photoluminescence (PL) peak at 1.59 eV, which is in sharp contrast to that caused by remote Ar plasma. This PL peak has a critical requirement on the N 2 plasma exposure dose, which is strongest for WS 2 with about 2.0% sulfur deficiencies (including substitutions and vacancies) and vanishes at 5.6% or higher sulfur deficiencies. Both experiments and first-principles calculations suggest that this 1.59 eV PL peak is caused by defects related to the sulfur substitutions by nitrogen, even though low-temperature PL measurements also reveal that not all the sulfur vacancies are remedied by the substitutional nitrogen. The distinct low-energy PL peak suggests that the substitutional nitrogen defect in single-layer WS 2 can potentially serve as an isolated artificial atom for creating single-photon emitters, and its intensity can also be used to monitor the doping concentrations of substitutional nitrogen.

High-Voltage Potassium Hexacyanoferrate Cathode via High-Entropy and Potassium Incorporation for Stable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) used as sodium ion battery (SIB) cathodes are usually the focus of attention due to their three-dimensional open frame and high theoretical capacity. Nonetheless, the disadvantages of a low working voltage and inferior structural stability of PBAs prevent their further applications. Herein, we propose constructing the K x (MnFeCoNiCu)[Fe(CN) 6 ] (HE-K-PBA) cathode by high-entropy and potassium incorporation strategy to simultaneously realize high working voltage and cycling stability. In this study, the reaction mechanism of metal cations in HE-K-PBA are revealed by synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in situ Raman spectra. We also investigate the entropy stabilization mechanism via finite element simulation, demonstrating that HE-K-PBA with small von Mises stress and weak structure strain can significantly mitigate the structural distortion. Benefit from the stable structure and everlasting K + (de)intercalation, the HE-K-PBA delivers high output voltage (3.46 V), good reversible capacity (120.5 mAh g –1 at 0.01 A g –1 ), and capacity retention of 90.4% after 1700 cycles at 1.0 A g –1 . Moreover, the assembled full cell and all-solid-state batteries with a stable median voltage of 3.29 V over 3000 cycles further demonstrate the application prospects of the HE-K-PBA cathode.

Unraveling Anisotropic and Pulsating Etching of ZnO Nanorods in Hydrochloric Acid via Correlative Electron Microscopy

Despite much technical progress achieved so far, the exact surface and shape evolution during wet chemical etching is less unraveled, especially in ionically bonded ceramics. Herein, by using in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, a repeated two-stage anisotropic and pulsating periodic etching dynamic is discovered during the pencil shape evolution of a single crystal ZnO nanorod in aqueous hydrochloric acid. Specifically, the nanopencil tip shrinks at a slower rate along [0001̅] than that along the $\langle$101̅0$\rangle$ directions, resulting in a sharper ZnO pencil tip. Afterward, rapid tip dissolution happens due to accelerated etching rates along various crystal directions. Concurrently, the vicinal base region of the original nanopencil tip emerges as a new tip followed by the repeated sequence of tip shrinking and removal. The high-index surfaces, such as {101̅m} (m = 0, 1, 2, or 3) and {21̅1̅n} (n = 0, 1, 2, or 3), are found to preferentially expose in different ratios. Our 3D electron tomography, convergent beam electron diffraction, middle-angle bright-field STEM, and XPS results indicate the dissociative Cl – species were bound to the Zn-terminated tip surfaces. Furthermore, DFT calculation suggests the preferential Cl – passivation over the {101̅1} and (0001) surfaces of lower energy than others, leading to preferential surface exposures and the oscillatory variation of different facet etching rates. The boosted reactivity due to high-index nanoscale surface exposures is confirmed by comparatively enhanced chemical sensing and CO 2 hydrogenation activity. In conclusion, these findings provide an in-depth understanding of anisotropic wet chemical etching of ionic nanocrystals and offer a design strategy for advanced functional materials.

Imaging Strain-Localized Single-Photon Emitters in Layered GaSe below the Diffraction Limit

Nanoscale strain control of exciton funneling is an increasingly critical tool for the scalable production of single photon emitters (SPEs) in two-dimensional materials. However, conventional far-field optical microscopies remain constrained in spatial resolution by the diffraction limit and thus can provide only a limited description of nanoscale strain localization of SPEs. Here, we quantify the effects of nanoscale heterogeneous strain on the energy and brightness of GaSe SPEs on nanopillars with correlative cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence, and atomic force microscopy, supported by density functional theory simulations. We report the strain-localized SPEs have a broad range of emission wavelengths from 620 to 900 nm. We reveal substantial strain-controlled SPE wavelength tunability over a ~100 nm spectral range and 2 orders of magnitude enhancement in the SPE brightness at the pillar center due to Type-I exciton funneling. In addition, we show that radiative biexciton cascade processes contribute to observed CL photon superbunching. Also, the GaSe SPEs show excellent stability, where their properties remain unchanged after electron beam exposure. Importantly, we anticipate that this comprehensive study on the nanoscale strain control of two-dimensional SPEs will provide key insights to guide the development of truly deterministic quantum photonics.

Impact of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy in Catalysis

Catalysis stands as an indispensable cornerstone of modern society, underpinning the production of over 80% of manufactured goods and driving over 90% of industrial chemical processes. As the demand for more efficient and sustainable processes grows, better catalysts are needed. Understanding the working principles of catalysts is key, and over the last 50 years, surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has become essential. Discovered in 1974, SERS has evolved into a mature and powerful analytical tool, transforming the way in which we detect molecules across disciplines. In catalysis, SERS has enabled insights into dynamic surface phenomena, facilitating the monitoring of the catalyst structure, adsorbate interactions, and reaction kinetics at very high spatial and temporal resolutions. This review explores the achievements as well as the future potential of SERS in the field of catalysis and energy conversion, thereby highlighting its role in advancing these critical areas of research.

Stationary Oxygen Vacancy Construction toward a Superior-Performance Ultrahigh Nickel Single-Crystal Cathode

Oxygen vacancies exert a complex and profound influence on the layered cathodes, especially those with ultrahigh nickel content. They can facilitate lithium-ion transport and enhance electronic conductivity, while aggressive oxygen vacancy formation causes structural degradation and electrolyte decomposition. Herein, taking ultrahigh nickel single-crystal LiNi 0.92 Co 0.06 Mn 0.02 O 2 (SC-Ni92) as a model material, we propose a pinning strategy to harness the benefits of oxygen vacancies while mitigating their detrimental effects. Through a carefully controlled thermal process, both oxygen vacancies and pinning atoms are successfully introduced into the surface region. The resulting anchored oxygen vacancies, capitalizing on their inherent advantages, improve conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion. Simultaneously, the neighboring pinning atoms effectively increase the migration barrier and suppress the adverse effects of these vacancies, including electrolyte decomposition and structural degradation during long-term electrochemical cycling. Consequently, oxygen vacancy-anchored single-crystal LiNi 0.92 Co 0.06 Mn 0.02 O 2 (SC-Ni92-OV) demonstrates significantly improved high-voltage electrochemical performance, with 86.16% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 4.6 V and 1 C in a half-cell and 90.71% after 300 cycles at 4.5 V and 1 C in a full cell. Furthermore, this study not only provides valuable insights into the chemistry of oxygen vacancy but also introduces a viable strategy for leveraging oxygen vacancies to achieve stable high-voltage performance in ultrahigh nickel single-crystal cathodes.

Deterministic Localization of Strain-Induced Single-Photon Emitters in Multilayer GaSe

The nanoscale strain has emerged as a powerful tool for controlling single-photon emitters (SPEs) in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). However, quantum emitters in monolayer TMDCs are typically unstable in ambient conditions. Multilayer TMDCs could be a solution, but they suffer from low quantum efficiency, resulting in low brightness of the SPEs. Here, we report the deterministic spatial localization of strain-induced SPEs in multilayer GaSe by nanopillar arrays. The strain-controlled quantum confinement effect introduces well-isolated sub-bandgap photoluminescence and corresponding suppression of the broad band edge photoluminescence. Clear photon-antibunching behavior is observed from the quantum dot-like GaSe sub-bandgap exciton emission at 3.5 K. The strain-dependent confinement potential and the brightness are found to be strongly correlated, suggesting a promising route for tuning and controlling SPEs. The comprehensive investigations of strain-engineered GaSe SPEs provide a solid foundation for the development of 2D devices for quantum photonic technologies.

Microwave-Based Synthesis of Functional Morphological Variants and Carbon Nanotube-Based Composites of VS 4 for Electrochemical Applications

A novel facile, fast, and efficient microwave-assisted method was developed to synthesize a number of diverse nanostructured motifs (ranging from nanorods to nanoflowers) of VS 4 along with its associated composite heterostructures, VS 4 /multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT; i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes). Specifically, we have probed and correlated the effects of a number of specific experimental variables, including primarily precursor, solvent, temperature, and time. We noted that nanorods formed more readily with VO(acac) 2 as the vanadium precursor and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a polar reaction solvent. By contrast, we determined that hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower-like assemblies, ranging in size from 100 to 200 nm in average diameter, could be controllably synthesized by using Na 3 VO 4 as the vanadium precursor and an aqueous water: polar solvent mixture as the reaction medium. We also observed that VS 4 disintegrates, when in the presence of either air, solution, or a combination of these environments, and established that the extent of VS4 nanorod decomposition could be almost fully prevented by storage under nitrogen. From an application’s perspective, our VS 4 is electrochemically active and shows behavior, consistent with the literature. In particular, as compared with pristine VS 4 nanorods alone, we observed enhanced electrochemical activity with (i) 3D hierarchical flower-like motifs, (ii) unique necklace-like VS 4 nanorod–MWNT composites, and (iii) samples in which as-prepared VS4 nanorods had been annealed. Moreover, we found that the rational application of specific physical and chemical processing treatments, such as (i) thermal annealing to improve crystallinity, (ii) the addition of MWNTs to form conductive composites, and (iii) the evolution of morphology from one-dimensional (1D) nanorods to more complex 3D nanoflowers, was favorable to the resulting electrochemical performance with respect to increasing stability and reversibility.

Amphiphilic Co-Solvents Modulate the Structure of Membrane Domains

Biofuels are an increasing part of the sustainable energy picture. This makes it a societal and economic imperative to optimize biofuel production. Mitigating the toxic effects of amphiphilic co-solvents is one way to improve the efficiency of biofuel production. Amphiphiles partition into cellular membranes, leading to membrane thinning, destabilization, loss of membrane potential, and, ultimately, cell death. However, this picture of solvent toxicity misses the disruptive impact of co-solvents on lateral membrane organization, which is increasingly recognized as critical for membrane protein sorting and oligomerization. The alteration or disruption of membrane domains has deleterious effects on cellular processes. Here, in this work, we pursue the hypothesis that membrane lateral organization is disrupted by the presence of co-solvents at concentrations lower than those which lead to full membrane destabilization. The disruption occurs due to an increasing interfacial tension between the co-existing phases, resulting in conformational changes to minimize the interfacial length-to-area ratio. This represents an unrecognized mode of solvent-induced stress and a new target for interventions to improve fermentation yields.

This perspective summarizes the current data gaps, transparency, and uncertainty aspects of existing LCI databases. Additionally, we survey and discuss novel techniques for LCI data generation, dissemination, and validation. We propose key future directions for LCI development efforts to address these challenges, including leveraging scientific and technical advances such as the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, and blockchain/cloud platforms. Adopting these advanced technologies can significantly improve the quality and accessibility of LCI data, thereby facilitating more accurate and reliable LCA studies.
