Numerical simulation of the Gulf Stream and Mid-Ocean eddies

Oceanographic field measurements have revealed intense, transient mesoscale motions in many parts of the world ocean. The circulation of the western North Atlantic, considered in the present study as a rectangular basin, is simulated with a primitive equation model that has five levels and a horizontal grid size of 37 km. The model ocean is driven by a 2.5 gyre pattern of steady zonal wind stress and by a Newtonian-type surface heating. Two cases are considered: the first uses a Laplacian formulation for the subgrid-scale lateral diffusions of heat and momentum; the second uses a highly scale-selective biharmonic formulation for these diffusions. An analysis of the heat transport, in the biharmonic experiment, shows that the horizontal transport of heat by eddies is much larger than the subgrid-scale horizontal heat diffusion. In the Gulf Stream region, the eddy heat transport is comparable to the effect of a lateral diffusion coefficient of 10 to the 7th sq cm/s.

Temperature profile of graphite surface burning in a stream of oxygen

Using methods for the objective measurement of the spectrum line reversal temperature in burning gases, the temperature profile at a graphite surface burning in a stream of oxygen was measured. From the behavior of the reversal temperature, it follows that particles in long-lived, high-energy states are present in the burning gas, and these bring about an overexcitation of the atomic species emitting the reversal line. Qualitative measurements show that a temperature maximum occurs at the expected distance of 1-2 mm from the graphite surface.

Remote sensing of Gulf Stream using GEOS-3 radar altimeter

Radar altimeter measurements from the GEOS-3 satellite to the ocean surface indicated the presence of expected geostrophic height differences across the the Gulf Stream. Dynamic sea surface heights were found by both editing and filtering the raw sea surface heights and then referencing these processed data to a 5 minute x 5 minute geoid. Any trend between the processed data and the geoid was removed by subtracting out a linear fit to the residuals in the open ocean. The mean current velocity of 107 + or - 29 cm/sec calculated from the dynamic heights for all orbits corresponded with velocities obtained from hydrographic methods. Also, dynamic topographic maps were produced for August, September, and October 1975. Results pointed out limitations in the accuracy of the geoid, height anomaly deteriorations due to filtering, and lack of dense time and space distribution of measurements.

Cosmic-ray streaming perpendicular to the mean magnetic field. II - The gyrophase distribution function

The distribution function of cosmic rays streaming perpendicular to the mean magnetic field in a turbulent medium is reexamined. Urch's (1977) discovery that in quasi-linear theory, the flux is due to particles at 90 deg pitch angle is discussed and shown to be consistent with previous formulations of the theory. It is pointed out that this flux of particles at 90 deg cannot be arbitrarily set equal to zero, and hence the alternative theory which proceeds from this premise is dismissed. A further, basic inconsistency in Urch's transport equation is demonstrated, and the connection between quasi-linear theory and compound diffusion is discussed.

Monte Carlo simulation of the jet stream process

A Monte Carlo model is formulated to simulate the orbital evolution of a system of colliding particles. It is found that inelastic collision alone (even if the impact energy dissipation from collision is very large) does not lead to the formation of a narrow ring-like jet stream; instead, a flat disk structure, similar to Saturn's rings, usually results. To produce the radial focusing effect, it is argued that additional dynamical effects, which would strengthen the collisional interaction between the particles in near-circular orbits, is needed.

Sources of magnetic fields in recurrent interplanetary streams

The paper examines sources of magnetic fields in recurrent streams observed by the Imp 8 and Heos spacecraft at 1 AU and by Mariner 10 en route to Mercury between October 31, 1973 and February 9, 1974, during Carrington rotations 1607-1610. Although most fields and plasmas at 1 AU were related to coronal holes and the magnetic field lines were open in those holes, some of the magnetic fields and plasmas at 1 AU were related to open field line regions on the sun which were not associated with known coronal holes, indicating that open field lines may be more basic than coronal holes as sources of the solar wind. Magnetic field intensities in five equatorial coronal holes, certain photospheric magnetic fields, and the coronal footprints of the sector boundaries on the source surface are characterized.

Two-stream theory of spectral reflectance of snow

Spectral reflectance of snow under diffuse illumination is studied using the two-stream approximation of the radiative transfer equation. The scattering and absorption within the snowcover due to the randomly distributed ice grains are characterized by the single scattering albedo and anisotropic phase function. Geometric optics calculations are used to relate the scattering and absorption parameters to grain size and density of snow. Analytical expressions for the intensity within the snowpack and the asymptotic flux extinction coefficient are also obtained. Good agreement is shown between the theory and available experimental data on visible and near-infrared reflectance and asymptotic flux extinction coefficient. The theory also may be used to explain the observed effect of aging on the snow reflectance.

Method and turbine for extracting kinetic energy from a stream of two-phase fluid

An axial flow separator turbine is described which includes a number of nozzles for delivering streams of a two-phase fluid along linear paths. A phase separator which responsively separates the vapor and liquid is characterized by concentrically related annuli supported for rotation within the paths. The separator has endless channels for confining the liquid under the influence of centrifugal forces. A vapor turbine fan extracts kinetic energy from the liquid. Angular momentum of both the liquid phase and the vapor phase of the fluid is converted to torque.

Observed distribution functions of H, He, C, O, and Fe in corotating energetic particle streams: Implications for interplanetary acceleration and propagation

Distribution functions for H, He, C, O, and Fe derived from our IMP 8 measurements of approximately 0.15 to approximately 8 MeV/nucleon particles in three corotating streams observed near earth are shown to have a simple exponential dependence on the particle speed. The e-folding speed, v sub o, is typically 0.01c, is found to be the same for the distribution functions of all elements examined, and varies little from one corotating event to the next. The relative abundances of energetic particles in these events resemble most closely the solar coronal composition and, thus, presumably that of the solar wind. These results may imply that the acceleration of these particles, which occurs in corotating interaction regions at several AU from the sun, is by a statistical process.

Characteristics of the advanced supersonic technology AST-105-1 configured for transpacific range with Pratt and Whitney aircraft variable stream control engines

Credence to systems weights and assurance that the noise study AST concept can be balanced were studied. Current titanium structural technology is assumed. A duct-burning turbofan variable stream control engine (VSCE), with noise reduction potential through use of a coannular nozzle was used. With 273 passengers, range of the AST-105-1 for a cruise Mach number of 2.62 is essentially transpacific. Lift-to-drag ratio is slightly higher than for previous AST configurations. It is trimmable over a center-of-gravity range of 4.7m (15.5 ft). Inherent high positive effective dihedral, typical of arrow-wing configurations in high-lift approach, would limit AST-105-1 to operating in crosswinds of 11.6 m/sec (22.4 kt), or less, with 75 percent of available lateral control. Normal power takeoff with cutback results in noise in excess of Federal Aviation Regulation Part 36 but less than for conventional procedure takeoff. Results of advanced (noncertificated) programmed throttle takeoff and approach procedures, not yet optimized, indicate that such can be an important additional method noise reduction.

Investigation of air stream from combustor-liner air entry holes, 3

Jets flowing from air entry holes of the combustor liner of a gas turbine were investigated. Cold air was supplied through the air entry holes into the primary hot gas flows. The mass flow of the primary hot gas and issuing jets was measured, and the behavior of the air jets was studied by the measurement of the temperature distribution of the gas mixture. The air jets flowing from three circular air entry holes, single streamwise long holes, and two opposing circular holes, parallel to the primary flow were studied along with the effects of jet and gas stream velocities, and of gas temperature. The discharge coefficient, the maximum penetration of the jets, the jet flow path, the mixing of the jets, and temperature distribution across the jets were investigated. Empirical expressions which describe the characteristics of the jets under the conditions of the experiments were formulated.

Characteristic electron variations across simple high-speed solar wind streams

The paper deals with electron variations across simple high-speed streams. Comprehensive scans of the shapes of electron distributions measured at the highest bulk speeds confirm the results of Rosenbauer et al. (1976, 1977) and show that the electron velocity distributions can be broken down into a low-energy or core component and a high-energy strongly beamed component. The low-energy component displays many characteristics expected from a fluid: the internal particle coupling necessary to maintain this state must result from both binary Coulomb collisions and wave-particle interactions. The high-energy or halo component displays many characteristics expected to develop in the absence of collisions beyond a certain base radius. These electrons appear to evolve under the primary influence of static interplanetary magnetic and electric fields and, therefore, develop very anisotropic velocity distributions.

A census of Gulf Stream rings, spring 1975

During 1975 several shipboard expendable bathythermograph surveys plus satellite infrared imagery provided a nearly synoptic view of the distribution and number of Gulf Stream rings in the western North Atlantic. Twelve rings were identified; nine were cyclonic (cold core) rings and three were anticyclonic (warm core) rings. This is the largest number of rings ever observed during a short period of time (4 months). Evidence suggests that the mean movement of these rings was southwestward.

Photographic observation of reactive stream impingement

The theoretical and experimental study described was carried out to gain insight into the physical-chemical mechanism which controls hypergolic propellant reactive stream separation (RSS), with a view toward establishing design criteria. The approach employed was to observe photographically single element injector combustion of N2O4/MMH, N2O4/A-50, and N2O4/N2H4 propellants. Single element injectors were used to provide an unobstructed view of the impingement zone. Hot firings were conducted in a special photographic chamber. High-speed color motion pictures were used to identify the occurrence of RSS. Four conventional unlike doublet injectors, two conventional triplet injectors, and three platelet injectors were used in the tests. A simulation of the Space Shuttle platelet injector was included. The most important design criterion derived from the study states that the element should be designed to avoid transitions between mixed and separated modes within the engine operational envelope.

Radiative transfer in spherical dust shells using a generalized two-stream Eddington approximation

Application of a generalized two-stream Eddington approximation to the problem of radiative transfer in extended, spherically symmetric dust shells is presented. It is assumed that the radiation field can be characterized by the mean intensity, the flux, and a positionally dependent direction cosine specifying the division into two solid-angle ranges. The direction cosine is not specified a priori and is a function of the geometry, opacity, and emissivity in the dust shell. A multiple-grain-size multiple-temperature-distribution dust shell is postulated in which isotropic and anisotropic scattering as well as absorption and thermal reemission are allowed. A program has been developed that solves for the multiple temperature distributions by applying the constraint of radiative equilibrium to each grain size, and then calculates emergent fluxes. Results of one such calculation are presented for a model dust shell having a maximum optical depth (approximately 41) in the visible, clearly showing large optical extinction and a moderate infrared excess.

Landau damping effects on solar wind fast streams

Recent measurements by the Pioneer 10 and Helios 1 spacecraft show that the leading edge of a corotating structure spreads as it moves from 0.3 AU to the orbit of the earth and steepens again farther out. By including Landau damping effects in the dynamical behavior of the streams, the above qualitative features can be accounted for.

Tropospheric circulation and interplanetary magnetic sector boundaries followed by MeV proton streams

The MeV proton streams which Svestka et al. (1976) connected with certain sector boundary transits appear to select boundary transits associated with unusually active solar wind conditions. Changes in tropospheric circulation linked to the proton boundary transits were larger than those linked to other boundary transits observed during the same interval. This investigation of sector boundary transits also sheds light on the relationship between changes in solar wind velocity, density and magnetic field and terrestrial changes in the vorticity area index, geomagnetic activity, and cosmic ray flux at earth.
