Shuttle Ku-band signal design study

Carrier synchronization and data demodulation of Unbalanced Quadriphase Shift Keyed (UQPSK) Shuttle communications' signals by optimum and suboptimum methods are discussed. The problem of analyzing carrier reconstruction techniques for unbalanced QPSK signal formats is addressed. An evaluation of the demodulation approach of the Ku-Band Shuttle return link for UQPSK when the I-Q channel power ratio is large is carried out. The effects that Shuttle rocket motor plumes have on the RF communications are determined also. The effect of data asymmetry on bit error probability is discussed.

Signal-to-noise ratios for stellar occultations by the rings of Uranus, 1977-1980

Approximate signal-to-noise ratios are calculated for 12 stellar occultations by the rings of Uranus during 1977-1980. Four of the stars are apparently bright enough to permit observation of the epsilon-ring occultations with a large telescope. For the best of these events, occultations by rings alpha through delta should also be observable with a large telescope, and epsilon-ring occultations should be detectable with smaller telescopes. Formulas for the signal-to-noise ratios are given to aid potential observers in evaluating the quality of the results they can expect to obtain with their own photometric equipment.

Carrier synchronization techniques for unbalanced QPSK signals. I

This paper uses MAP estimation techniques to obtain carrier reconstruction circuits for unbalanced QPSK signals. In addition, the performance analysis of these circuits is carried out to the extent that a loop design can proceed. Numerical results are presented in order to demonstrate the utility of the theory developed. This signal design will be used in the development of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) and the Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System (NAVSTAR GPS).

Automatic communication signal monitoring system

A system is presented for automatic monitoring of a communication signal in the RF or IF spectrum utilizing a superheterodyne receiver technique with a VCO to select and sweep the frequency band of interest. A first memory is used to store one band sweep as a reference for continual comparison with subsequent band sweeps. Any deviation of a subsequent band sweep by more than a predetermined tolerance level produces an alarm signal which causes the band sweep data temporarily stored in one of two buffer memories to be transferred to long-term store while the other buffer memory is switched to its store mode to assume the task of temporarily storing subsequent band sweeps.

Nonparametric algorithms for the search of signals

Two algorithms for the search of signals in noise are constructed. Two independent measurable properties of a discreet time-dependent stochastic process F are described. The functions A sub K and B sub K fully satisfy conditions for the application of a test based on Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. A statistic to which the one-sided signal test can be applied is constructed under sufficiently natural assumptions about the noise process. The constructed statistics are simplified. Processing results from calculations of statistics constructed for concrete processes are presented.

The effect of interference on delta modulation encoded video signals

The results of a study on the use of the delta modulator as a digital encoder of television signals are presented. The computer simulation was studied of different delta modulators in order to find a satisfactory delta modulator. After finding a suitable delta modulator algorithm via computer simulation, the results are analyzed and then implemented in hardware to study the ability to encode real time motion pictures from an NTSC format television camera. The effects were investigated of channel errors on the delta modulated video signal and several error correction algorithms were tested via computer simulation. A very high speed delta modulator was built (out of ECL logic), incorporating the most promising of the correction schemes, so that it could be tested on real time motion pictures. The final area of investigation concerned itself with finding delta modulators which could achieve significant bandwidth reduction without regard to complexity or speed. The first such scheme to be investigated was a real time frame to frame encoding scheme which required the assembly of fourteen, 131,000 bit long shift registers as well as a high speed delta modulator. The other schemes involved two dimensional delta modulator algorithms.

Generalization of the Manley-Rowe relations for non-periodic signals constrained in bandwidth with finite energy

General relations for the energy spectral densities of nonperiodic signals constrained in bandwidth in nonlinear reactances are derived. It is assumed that the charge-voltage characteristics of the reactances are polynomials. In addition certain conditions for the frequency bands of the signals must be met. By contrast with the Manley-Rowe relations integrals with respect to frequency appear instead of the ratios power over frequency. The integrands are energy spectral densities divided by frequency. For parametric devices inequalities can be derived for the ratios of the energy levels in the different circuits and the limiting frequencies of the energy spectral densities. With these inequalities it is possible to determine limits for the energy levels.

Algorithms for the determination of the time delays of the signal when using unequal detectors

In treating the recorded results from detectors at different locations in space, the analysis of the time delays of signals is crucial to locating the sources of detected radiation. Because the correlation method requires the manipulation of awkward matrices to evaluate its accuracy, a solution is outlined based on minimizing the sum of the squares of signal deviations, and the algorithms for evaluating the resulting error are presented.

Spectral characteristics of convolutionally coded digital signals

The power spectral density of the output symbol sequence of a convolutional encoder is computed for two different input symbol stream source models, namely, an NRZ signaling format and a first order Markov source. In the former, the two signaling states of the binary waveform are not necessarily assumed to occur with equal probability. The effects of alternate symbol inversion on this spectrum are also considered. The mathematical results are illustrated with many examples corresponding to optimal performance codes.

Precipitation attenuation studies based on measurements of ATS-6 20/30-GHz beacon signals at Clarksburg, MD.

COMSAT Laboratories participated in the millimeter wavelength propagation experiment, performing measurements of the 20/30-GHz ATS-6 satellite beacon signals and auxiliary measurements such as radiometric sky temperature and minute precipitation at Clarksburg, MD. These measurements were intended to broaden the data base required to advance satellite path at frequencies over 10 GHz. A correlation is established between direct measurement of attenuation of the signal radiated from the satellite and the indirect measurement of attenuation by auxiliary ground-based equipment. The indirectly derived statistics agreed reasonably well or can be reconciled with earlier published results and may therefore be used as a basis for estimating long-term cumulative attenuation statistics.

Performances of regenerative and non-regenerative satellite repeaters with MPSK signalling

Linear (translation), hard-limited, and demod/remod types of satellite repeaters are considered in this paper. Both uncoded and coded multiple phase shift keyed (MPSK) signals are assumed to be transmitted through these repeaters. Relative performances of these repeaters in the presence of uplink and downlink noises are then compared quantitatively. Probabilities of bit errors and the computational cutoff rates are computed for 2, 4, and 8 phases PSK signals, with uplink and downlink SNRs as parameters.

Alternative signal processing techniques for a pulsed laser Doppler velocimeter system

The laser Doppler velocimeter system (LDV) being tested at NASA MSFC, Alabama, relies on a bank of classical filters for processing the returned lidar signal. Due to the complexity of this conventional filter system, alternative signal processing methods have been proposed for obtaining the Doppler spectrum. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the pulse-pair estimator are two techniques which appear to offer some advantages over the existing system. The work reported employs digital computer simulation to compare and evaluate these two processing methods for determining the first and second moments of the LDV velocity spectrum.

Fiber optics transmit clock signal more reliably

Optical automatic gain control smooths maser clock amplitude fluctuations without phase shift. Uncomplicated optical system is more reliable than electrical transmission circuits which require phase-locked loops to compensate for shift. Maser feeds reference signal to linear fiber-optic analog transmitter which emits modulated laser beam directed to splitter. Splitter consists of dichroic mirrors and associated lenses for distributing beam to output ports. Cables attached there guide signals to receiving station.

Experimental determination of position-estimate accuracy using back-azimuth signals from a microwave landing system

Flight tests using the Boeing 737 airplane to obtain position estimates with back azimuth signals from a microwave landing system (MLS) are discussed. The equations and logic used to generate a navigation position estimate in the MLS back azimuth signal environment are described. The error in the navigation position estimate is determined. A summary of the Boeing 737 position estimate update process is described. The navigation position estimate error calculated flight data and radar tracking information is analyzed. The position estimate error data using the MLS inputs are compared with error data obtained during dual distance measuring equipment updates.

SPS pilot signal design and power transponder analysis, volume 2, phase 3

The problem of pilot signal parameter optimization and the related problem of power transponder performance analysis for the Solar Power Satellite reference phase control system are addressed. Signal and interference models were established to enable specifications of the front end filters including both the notch filter and the antenna frequency response. A simulation program package was developed to be included in SOLARSIM to perform tradeoffs of system parameters based on minimizing the phase error for the pilot phase extraction. An analytical model that characterizes the overall power transponder operation was developed. From this model, the effects of different phase noise disturbance sources that contribute to phase variations at the output of the power transponders were studied and quantified. Results indicate that it is feasible to hold the antenna array phase error to less than one degree per power module for the type of disturbances modeled.

Simulation of transducer-couplant effects on broadband ultrasonic signals

The increasing use of broadband, pulse-echo ultrasonics in nondestructive evaluation of flaws and material properties has generated a need for improved understanding of the way signals are modified by coupled and bonded thin-layer interfaces associated with transducers. This understanding is most important when using frequency spectrum analyses for characterizing material properties. In this type of application, signals emanating from material specimens can be strongly influenced by couplant and bond-layers in the acoustic path. Computer synthesized waveforms were used to simulate a range of interface conditions encountered in ultrasonic transducer systems operating in the 20 to 80 MHz regime. The adverse effects of thin-layer multiple reflections associated with various acoustic impedance conditions are demonstrated. The information presented is relevant to ultrasonic transducer design, specimen preparation, and couplant selection.

Signal to noise ratio calculation for fiber optics links

The signal to noise ratio (SNR) effect upon the maximum transmission length of a fiberoptic system is discussed. The relationships of different system parameters are discussed. A general formula to obtain the SNR of a single mode fiberoptic system is derived. The SNR attainable with single mode and multimode fiber optics links was calculated from fundamental noise considerations. It was found that for single mode fibers, laser noise dominates the noise contributions for links less than 30 km long, while thermal noise dominates for longer links. Multimode fibers degrade SNR for long links because of intermode dispersion. For frequency standard transmission, as long as the baseband modulation signals are within the bandwidth of the fibers, respectable SNR can be attained with low loss fibers (approximately 1 dB/km) for links as long as 70 km. For wideband transmission SNR is decreased by a factor equal to the ratio of the bandwidth.
