X-ray emission from O-type stars - Parameters which affect it

As a result of previous analyses of the X-ray fluxes of O-type stars, it has been established that, surprisingly, there is no correlation between X-ray flux and such basic parameters as M, R, v(rot), T(eff), mass accretion rate v(infinity), L(w) = mass accretion rate v(infinity), and wind energy. In this paper, other factors influencing the X-ray flux of the hottest stars are sought. As a result of the present analysis, it is found that stars embedded in dense clouds are often X-ray brighter, runaway stars are fainter in X-rays, massive binaries emit more X-rays than single stars, and radio-bright stars are also more active in X-rays. All these correlations lead to the conclusion that the stellar environment and the interaction of the stellar wind with circumstellar matter (possible remnants of protostellar clouds) play a dominant role in the production of the X-ray flux.

Viscoelastic properties of elastomeric materials for O-ring applications

Redesign of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster necessitated re-evaluation of the material used in the field joint O-ring seals. This research project was established to determine the viscoelastic characteristics of five candidate materials. The five materials are: two fluorocarbon compounds, two nitrile compounds, and a silicon compound. The materials were tested in a uniaxial compression test to determine the characteristic relaxation functions. These tests were performed at five different temperatures. A master material curve was developed for each material from the experimental data. The results of this study are compared to tensile relaxation tests. Application of these results to the design analysis is discussed in detail.

The winds of O-stars. I - An analysis of the UV line profiles with the SEI method

The theoretical UV P Cygni profiles of the UV resonance lines for C IV, N V, Si IV, C III, and N IV of 26 O-type stars and one B star were calculated using the SEI method described by Lamers et al. (1987), taking into account the effects of turbulence in the wind, limb darkening, photospheric lines, and interstellar Ly alpha. The results were compared with profiles observed with the IUE satellite. The profile fits were found to be very accurate, showing significant improvement over previously obtained fits with the Sobolev (1958) method. The SEI method and the line fitting analysis are described and the results are presented in terms of the column densities and distributions of absorbing atoms, and the velocity laws.

Microstructure and magnetization of doped Y-Ba-Ca-O materials prepared by melt quench and post annealing method

Y-Ba-Cu-O bulk materials prepared using the melt quench and post annealing method were shown to have very high maximum as well as remanent magnetization. Studies were carried out on materials prepared using this method which deviate from the Y:Ba:Cu = 1:2:3 stoichiometry. In one series of materials, only the stoichiometry was changed, in particular by introducing an excess of yttrium. In other cases, dopants including several rare earths were introduced. Effects of variations in composition on microstructure and phase evolution are discussed, as well as effects on the magnetic susceptibility and on the magnetization. The results show that doped materials can exhibit improvements in magnetic properties. Furthermore, the use of dopants sheds light on the role of defect sites in flux pinning.

Composite superconducting wires obtained by high-rate tinning in molten Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system

The preparation of high-T(sub c) superconducting long composite wires by short-time tinning of the metal wires in a molten Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O compound is discussed. The application of this method to the high-T(sub c) materials is tested, possibly for the first time. The initial materials used for this experiment were ceramic samples with nominal composition Bi(1.5)Pb(0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) and T(sub c) = 80 K prepared by the ordinary solid-state reaction, and industrial copper wires from 100 to 400 microns in diameter and from 0.5 to 1 m long. The continuously moving wires were let through a small molten zone (approximately 100 cubic mm). The Bi-based high-T(sub c) ceramics in a molten state is a viscous liquid and it has a strongly pronounced ability to spread on metal wire surfaces. The maximum draw rate of the Cu-wire, at which a dense covering is still possible, corresponds to the time of direct contact of wire surfaces and liquid ceramics for less than 0.1 s. A high-rate draw of the wire permits a decrease in the reaction of the oxide melt and Cu-wire. This method of manufacture led to the fabrication of wire with a copper core in a dense covering with uniform thickness of about h approximately equal to 5 to 50 microns. Composite wires with h approximately equal to 10 microns (h/d approximately equal to 0.1) sustained bending on a 15 mm radius frame without cracking during flexing.

Processing Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductors from amorphous state

Researchers produced superconducting ceramics of the Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system started from a glass. To form the glass, the mixed oxide powder was melted at 1200 C in air. The liquid was quenched rapidly by pouring it onto an aluminum plate and rapidly pressing with another plate. The quenched compound was in the form of black amorphous solid, whose x-ray powder pattern has no crystalline peaks. After heat treatment at high temperatures, the glass crystallized into a superconductor. The crystalline phases in the superconductor identified using x-ray diffraction patterns. These phases were that associated with the superconducting phases of T(sub c) = 80 K (Bi2Ca1Sr2Cu2Ox) and of T(sub c) = 110 K (Bi2Ca2Sr2Cu3Ox). The dc resistivity and the ac susceptibility of these superconductors were studied.

Superconductivity in the Sn-Ba-Sr-Y-Cu-O system

Since Bednorz and Muller discovered high-T(sub c) superconductivity in the La-Ba-Cu-O compound, several families of superconducting oxides have been synthesized. Here, researchers report the results of search for superconductivity in the compounds based on tin, which has a lone electron pair like Bi, Tl, Pb. The following compounds were synthesized: Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ca1Mg1Cu3Ox. The initial components were oxides and carbonates of the appropriate elements. Standard firing-grinding procedure was used. Final heating was carried out at 960 C during 12 hours. Then the samples were cooled inside the furnace. All the synthesis cycles were carried out in air atmosphere. Among the synthesized compounds only Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox showed remarkable conductivity. Other compounds were practically dielectrics. Presence of a possible superconductivity in Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox was defined by using the Meissner effect. At low temperature a deviation from paramagnetic behavior is observed. The hysteresis loops obtained at lower temperatures undoubtly testify to the presence of a superconductive phase in the sample. However, the part of the superconductive phase in the Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox ceramic turned out to be small, less than 2 percent, which agrees with the estimation from magnetic data. In order to increase the content of the superconductive phase two-valent cations Ba, Sr were partially substituted by univalent (K) and three-valent ones (Y).

Study of the superconducting properties of the Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O system

High Temperature Superconductivity in the Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O System has been observed and has attracted considerable attention in 1988. The 80 K superconductivity phase has been identified to have a composition of Bi2CaSr2Cu2Ox, while the 110 K phase as reported in the literature has a possible composition of Bi2Ca2Sr2Cu3Ox. Researchers present here a study of the electrical properties of bulk samples of the slowly cooled and rapidly quenched 2:1:2:2 system. The samples used in this study were prepared from appropriate amounts of Bi2O3, CuO, SrCO3, CaCO3.

Magnetic properties of the 110K superconducting phase in Pb-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films

The relaxation of the remnant moment induced in a nearly single phase high T(sub c) thin film of Pd-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O was investigated. Measurements reveal that the relaxation obeys a logarithmic time dependence for observation times up to 2000 seconds. The temperature dependence of the initial magnetization of the film and its decay rate are obtained. The initial magnetization monotonically decreases. However, the decay rate normalized by initial magnetization has a peak at approximately 14 K for an applied field of 500 gauss. The peak shifts to lower temperature for a stronger magnetic field. These data are compared with existing data on other high T(sub c) superconducting materials.

Intensity measurements in the 720.8/cm Q branch of (C-12)(O-16)2

Measurements of the 15-micron bands of CO2 are presented, focusing on measurements to determine the validity of the intensity measurements in the 720.8/cm band used as a spectroscopic parameter in temperature sounding experiments. The absolute intensities of the lines between 718.9449/cm and 719.8319/cm in the Q branch of (C-12)(O-16)2 at 295 K are measured using the Doppler-limited spectral resolution (about 0.0001/cm) of a tunable diode laser. The differences between the results and previously reported data are discussed.

Re-Os, Rb-Sr, and O isotopic systematics of the Archean Kolar schist belt, Karnataka, India

The Re-Os, Rb-Sr, and O isotopic compositions of mafic and ultramafic amphibolites, gold ores, and granitic gneisses of the circa 2700 Ma Kolar schist belt are reported which reveal at least two episodes of postmagmatic alteration that affected these systems. The Re-Os isotopic systematics of many of the belt rocks indicate that Os was introduced to the area via fluids that carried very radiogenic Os, probably from ancient crust. The Rb-Sr systematics of most of these rocks indicate that the alteration event probably occurred no later than the early Proterozoic. Samples of several komatiitic amphibolites have very Os-187-depleted compositions, indicating that open-system behavior also occurred at a much later time than the late Archean or early Proterozoic. The results suggest that the Re-Os system may have only limited utility for geochronologic applications in regions for which postcrystallization noble metal mineralization is evident.

C-O-H ratios of silicate melt inclusions in basalts from the Galapagos Spreading Center near 95 deg W - A laser decrepitation mass spectrometry study

Ratios of C, O, and H dissolved in silicate glass inclusions and pillow rind glasses in samples from the Galapagos Spreading Center near 95 deg W were analyzed (using laser volatilization and mass spectrometry), and the data were assessed in terms of mantle source compositions, oxygen fugacity, kinetic fractionation, and magmatic degassing. It was found that glass inclusions in the Galapagos failing rift lavas are higher and more variable in CO2/H2O (about 0.641) relative to inclusions in propagating rift lavas (about 0.245). This difference is considered to reflect different degrees of degassing during contrasting magmatic histories of the two regions.

R-matrix calculations for electron-impact excitation of C(+), N(2+), and O(3+) including fine structure

The new R-matrix package for comprehensive close-coupling calculations for electron scattering with the first three ions in the boron isoelectronic sequence, the astrophysically significant C(+), N(2+), and O(3+), is presented. The collision strengths are calculated in the LS coupling approximation, as well as in pair-coupling scheme, for the transitions among the fine-structure sublevels. Calculations are carried out at a large number of energies in order to study the detailed effects of autoionizing resonances.

Long-term compression effects on elastomeric O-ring behavior

This paper discusses the results of testing performed on elastomeric seal materials that had been under compression for extended periods of time. Elastomeric seals used in the Space Shuttle redesigned solid rocket motors can experience compression times of up to six months. These seals must be capable of sealing internal motor pressure upon ignition. The tests described herein were performed in order to verify that the seals, which had experienced long-term compression could seal throughout motor operation. Testing was divided into two phases: (1) dynamic high pressure testing, and (2) resiliency testing. Dynamic testing was performed using specialized test fixtures that allowed simulation of the field joint movements during initial motor operation along with high pressure gas. Resiliency testing was performed using specialized test fixtures that also simulated field joint movements and also had the ability to measure the sealing force of the O-ring. Results from all testing indicated that the current elastomeric seals used in the redesigned solid rocket motors will seal during motor operations in the currently defined launch environments.

Observations of H2(O-18) at 547 GHz with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The 1(10)-1(01) transition of H2(O-18) has been searched for in several sources without positive detection. However, in NGC 2264 and NGC 7538, possible emission features are suspected. Implications of these feataures, if confirmed, are discussed. The best upper limit obtained in Orion (0.9 K) indicates that in that cloud, the water abundance should not be more than 1 percent that of CO.

Enhanced ultrasonic attenuation of Tl-Ca-Ba-Cu-O at the superconducting transition

Temperature-dependent ultrasonic attenuation measurements have been performed on polycrystalline samples of Tl-Ca-Ba-Cu-O at various frequencies. An attenuation anomaly was observed close to the superconducting transition temperature T(c) (103 K) whose temperature position was frequency-independent. The attenuation decreased exponentially with temperature in the superconducting state for both transverse and longitudinal waves. It was also found that the temperature-dependent sound velocity showed a slope change around T(c).
