Facilitating Screening of MOFs for Mixed Matrix Membranes Using Machine Learning and the Maxwell Model

Metal organic framework (MOF)-based mixedmatrix membranes (MMMs), which embed MOF particles in polymer matrices, combine the advantages of polymeric and inorganic membranes. Multiple previous studies have used the Maxwell model together with molecular simulations and machine learning (ML) to predict the performance of MOF/polymer MMMs. However, the assumption of rigid MOF frameworks in molecular simulations limited the accuracy of the data used in the predictions, particularly in predicting molecular diffusivities. We developed a novel workflow integrating ML models with consideration of MOF flexibility to predict the permeability and selectivity of 131,722 MMMs for CO 2 /CH 4 , O 2 /N 2 and He/H 2 separations. The full range of achievable MMM performance within the Maxwell model was analyzed, and several promising MOFs were identified using this workflow. This approach offers an efficient tool for screening any polymer and MOF combination in gas separation applications.

Aligned Conjugated Polymer Nanofiber Networks in an Elastomer Matrix for High-Performance Printed Stretchable Electronics

Conjugated polymer films are promising in wearable X-ray detection. However, achieving optimal film microstructure possessing good electrical and detection performance under large deformation via scalable printing remains challenging. Herein, we report bar-coated high-performance stretchable films based on a conjugated polymer P(TDPP-Se) and elastomer SEBS blend by optimizing the solution-processing conditions. The moderate preaggregation in solution and prolonged growth dynamics from a solvent mixture with limited dissolving capacity is critical to forming aligned P(TDPP-Se) chains/crystalline nanofibers in the SEBS phase with enhanced π–π stacking for charge transport and stress dissipation. The film shows a large elongation at break of >400% and high mobilities of 5.29 cm 2 V –1 s –1 at 0% strain and 1.66 cm 2 V –1 s –1 over 500 stretch–release cycles at 50% strain, enabling good X-ray imaging with a high sensitivity of 1501.52 μC Gy air –1 cm –2 . Finally, our work provides a morphology control strategy toward high-performance conjugated polymer film-based stretchable electronics.

Polymer–Ceramic Composite Electrolytes for Lithium Batteries: A Comparison between the Single-Ion-Conducting Polymer Matrix and Its Counterpart

Single-ion-conducting polymer electrolytes are attractive to use in lithium batteries as the transference number of the lithium cation approaches unity. This helps prevent concentration gradients across the electrolyte, which can result in dendrite formation. The addition of ceramic particles to polymer electrolytes at high loadings can increase the mechanical strength of the polymer, which can also help suppress dendrite formation. Here, a single-ion-conducting polymer electrolyte is blended with lithium-conducting oxide ceramic particles to make a composite electrolyte. This electrolyte is studied in comparison to a composite electrolyte containing freely dissolved lithium salt. It is found that the addition of ceramic particles to the single-ion-conducting polymer can result in increased cation dissociation and consequent increased ionic conductivity. The electrolytes are cycled in lithium symmetrical cells, and it is found that the ceramic-containing electrolytes show increased interfacial stability with the lithium metal compared to the pristine polymer electrolytes. Our findings shed light on how to optimize the polymer host chemistry to form composite electrolytes that can meet the challenging requirements to stabilize the lithium metal anode.
