Empirical State Error Covariance Matrix for Batch Estimation

State estimation techniques effectively provide mean state estimates. However, the theoretical state error covariance matrices provided as part of these techniques often suffer from a lack of confidence in their abilities to describe the true uncertainty in the estimated states. By a reinterpretation of the equations involved in the weighted least squares algorithm, it is possible to directly arrive at an empirical state error covariance matrix. This proposed empirical state error covariance matrix will contain the effect of all error sources, known or unknown. Results are presented for a simple, two observer, measurement error only problem.

Graph Partitioning and Sparse Matrix Ordering using Reinforcement Learning and Graph Neural Networks

We present a novel method for graph partitioning, based on reinforcement learning and graph convolutional neural networks. Our approach is to recursively partition coarser representations of a given graph. The neural network is implemented using SAGE graph convolution layers, and trained using an advantage actor critic (A2C) agent. We present two variants, one for finding an edge separator that minimizes the normalized cut or quotient cut, and one that finds a small vertex separator. The vertex separators are then used to construct a nested dissection ordering to permute a sparse matrix so that its triangular factorization will incur less fill-in. The partitioning quality is compared with partitions obtained using METIS and SCOTCH, and the nested dissection ordering is evaluated in the sparse solver SuperLU. Our results show that the proposed method achieves similar partitioning quality as METIS and SCOTCH. Furthermore, the method generalizes across different classes of graphs, and works well on a variety of graphs from the SuiteSparse sparse matrix collection.

$\mathcal{R}$ -matrix analysis of η + nat Cl reactions relevant to molten-salt reactor designs [Abstract]

Performed with support from the U.S. Nuclear Criticality Safety Program in an effort to provide improved chlorine cross section and corresponding covariance data, the R-matrix analysis of neutron induced reactions for two stable chlorine isotopes, 35,37 Cl, was performed in the energy range of thermal up to 1.2 MeV. Starting from the repository of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library and following recent measurement campaigns, this work represents a significant improvement in the evaluation of the ( η , p ) reaction channel. The evaluation methodology uses the $\mathcal{R}$ -matrix code SAMMY to generate a set of Reich-Moore resonance parameters. As predicted by recently measured 35 Cl( η , p ) data, the presented evaluation features a dramatic increase in the magnitude of the ( η , p ) reaction channel over the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and previous nuclear data ENDF/B released libraries. Together with details of the evaluation procedure, the impact of the updates in the outgoing proton emissions on reactivity coefficients for different molten-salt reactor designs is presented and discussed.

Perovskite Grown in Gallium Nitride Nanowire Matrix for Stable and High‐Efficiency X‐Ray Detection

High-quality quasi-2D perovskites in a GaN nano-wire matrix are grown to build a 3D hetero-structure for high-performance X-ray sensing. In the 3D hetero-structure, GaN nano-wire matrix serves as an n-type charge collector that can rapidly extract carriers through the bulk film of the perovskite layer. Together with a p-type top electrode, a p–i–n diode with the 3D hetero-structure is built, that exhibits a rectified current–voltage characteristic. After analyzing the interface energy alignment, it is found that the fermi levels of the perovskite and GaN are aligned in the dark, and a quasi-fermi level splits upon illumination, introducing a built-in electrical field at the interface. As a result, strong photo-induced current is observed from the diode without an external field. Finally, the 3D diode for X-ray detection demonstration is used, revealing a sensitivity of 308.9 µC Gy air -1 cm -2 at an exceptionally low applied field of 0.125 V µm -1 . The X-ray-induced signal from the 3D diode is stable after 155 cycles of X-ray irradiation under a constant electric field. This demonstration informs a new 3D architecture for high-performance X-ray sensing, and it shows that GaN is a robust n-type interface for perovskite optoelectronic devices.

BAD2matrix: Phylogenomic matrix concatenation, indel coding, and more

Common steps in phylogenomic matrix production include biological sequence concatenation, morphological data concatenation, insertion/deletion (indel) coding, gene content (presence/absence) coding, removing uninformative characters for parsimony analysis, recording with reduced amino acid alphabets, and occupancy filtering. Existing software does not accomplish these tasks on a phylogenomic scale using a single program. BAD2matrix is a Python script that performs the above-mentioned steps in phylogenomic matrix construction for DNA or amino acid sequences as well as morphological data. The script works in UNIX-like environments (e.g., LINUX, MacOS, Windows Subsystem for LINUX).

Matrix-free preconditioning for high-order H (curl) discretizations

The greater arithmetic intensity of high-order finite element discretizations makes them attractive for implementation on next-generation hardware, but assembly of high-order finite element operators as matrices is prohibitively expensive. As a result, the development of general algebraic solvers for such operators has been an open research challenge. Fast matrix-free application of high-order operators has received significant attention in the literature in the context of Poisson-type problems, but preconditioners and solvers for inverting more general operators are not very well-developed. In this paper, we consider the problem of preconditioning a definite Maxwell operator at high polynomial order without assembling a matrix. We show that given efficient preconditioners for high-order H 1 finite element problems on the same mesh, efficient H(curl) preconditioners can be constructed in an auxiliary space framework. We demonstrate the resulting preconditioners in a practical setting with tensor-product basis functions on an unstructured mesh of quadrilaterals. Overall, our approach uses a sparsified H 1 solver constructed on a low-order mesh of the nodal points of the underlying high-order space, and we show that the resulting H(curl) preconditioner is effective at very high polynomial orders for two-dimensional model problems with complicated geometry, varying piecewise constant coefficients, and curved elements. The resulting preconditioner scales with nearly optimal O(p d+1 ) floating point operation count and optimal O(p d ) memory transfer requirements, outperforming existing Maxwell preconditioners in the high-order regime.

Sparse Matrix-Based HPC Tomography

Tomographic imaging has benefited from advances in X-ray sources, detectors and optics to enable novel observations in science, engineering and medicine. These advances have come with a dramatic increase of input data in the form of faster frame rates, larger fields of view or higher resolution, so high performance solutions are currently widely used for analysis. Tomographic instruments can vary significantly from one to another, including the hardware employed for reconstruction: from single CPU workstations to large scale hybrid CPU/GPU supercomputers. Furthermore, flexibility on the software interfaces and reconstruction engines are also highly valued to allow for easy development and prototyping. This paper presents a novel software framework for tomographic analysis that tackles all aforementioned requirements. The proposed solution capitalizes on the increased performance of sparse matrix-vector multiplication and exploits multi-CPU and GPU reconstruction over MPI. Furthermore, the solution is implemented in Python and relies on CuPy for fast GPU operators and CUDA kernel integration, and on SciPy for CPU sparse matrix computation. As opposed to previous tomography solutions that are tailor-made for specific use cases or hardware, the proposed software is designed to provide flexible, portable and high-performance operators that can be used for continuous integration at different production environments, but also for prototyping new experimental settings or for algorithmic development. The experimental results demonstrate how our implementation can even outperform state-of-the-art software packages used at advanced X-ray sources worldwide.

New oscillation and scattering constraints on the tau row matrix elements without assuming unitarity

The tau neutrino is the least well measured particle in the Standard Model. Most notably, the tau neutrino row of the lepton mixing matrix is quite poorly constrained when unitarity is not assumed. In this paper, we identify data sets involving tau neutrinos that improve our understanding of the tau neutrino part of the mixing matrix, in particular ν ${\tau}$ appearance in atmospheric neutrinos. We present new results on the elements of the tau row leveraging existing constraints on the electron and muon rows for the cases of unitarity violation, with and without kinematically accessible steriles. We also show the expected sensitivity due to upcoming experiments and demonstrate that the tau neutrino row precision may be comparable to the muon neutrino row in a careful combined fit.

S-matrix bootstrap in 3+1 dimensions: regularization and dual convex problem

The S-matrix bootstrap maps out the space of S-matrices allowed by analyticity, crossing, unitarity, and other constraints. For the 2 → 2 scattering matrix S 2→2 such space is an infinite dimensional convex space whose boundary can be determined by maximizing linear functionals. On the boundary interesting theories can be found, many times at vertices of the space. Here we consider 3 + 1 dimensional theories and focus on the equivalent dual convex minimization problem that provides strict upper bounds for the regularized primal problem and has interesting practical and physical advantages over the primal problem. Its variables are dual partial waves k ℓ (s) that are free variables, namely they do not have to obey any crossing, unitarity or other constraints. Nevertheless they are directly related to the partial waves f ℓ (s), for which all crossing, unitarity and symmetry properties result from the minimization. Numerically, it requires only a few dual partial waves, much as one wants to possibly match experimental results. We consider the case of scalar fields which is related to pion physics.
