Airborne LiDAR to Improve Canopy Fuels Mapping for Wildfire Modeling

Increasing conflict between wildfire and the built environment has increased the need for more up-to-date and finer resolution canopy fuels data to improve wildfire modeling and associated risk forecasts. The US Forest Service and US Department of the Interior’s LANDFIRE product, which provides 30-m resolution canopy fuels data for the entire US, is one of the most widely used sources of fuels data. However, the last complete mapping effort for LANDFIRE is based on 2016 conditions, and subsequent updates reflect disturbances 1-2 years behind the release year. Airborne systems equipped with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors can be deployed to actively sense canopy structure and estimate canopy fuels data (cover, height, base height, bulk density) at finer resolutions. Canopy base height (CBH) and canopy bulk density (CBD) are difficult to measure both in the field and in LiDAR point clouds. Still, they are important for accurately modeling crown fires, which are often intense and difficult to contain. Additionally, point cloud datasets are large, and calculations require efficient utilization of computational resources. To address these challenges, we are working on an approach that uses openly available National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) airborne LiDAR data, with calculations processed in the R programming language and parallelized through the lidR package. CBH and CBD are often derived from tree height, diameter at breast height, and species-specific allometries using the Fire and Fuels Extension of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FFE-FVS). We aim to test if airborne LiDAR can estimate CBH and CBD without the use of empirical equations. Reliable estimates of canopy fuels data directly from airborne LiDAR could streamline quick, fine-resolution updates for use in wildfire behavior models.

Discovering Innovations in Stress Tolerance through Comparative Gene Regulatory Network Analysis and Cell-Type Specific Expression Maps (Final Technical Report with Cover Page)

Through this grant, we developed a comparative framework to elucidate the mechanisms behind variations in environmental stress responses among a diverse group of species within the Brassicaceae family. Our focus was on the differences in physiological and transcriptomic responses to abscisic acid (ABA), a hormone associated with water stress. We examined the differential growth responses of four Brassicaceae species, finding that most exhibited reduced root growth correlated with smaller meristem size. In contrast, Schrenkiella parvula showed accelerated growth due to increased root cell elongation. We employed RNA sequencing to analyze the transcriptional responses to ABA across these species, and innovative bioinformatics techniques were used to pinpoint biological pathways with significant divergence. Additionally, we utilized DAP-seq to map the gene regulatory networks associated with ABAresponsive transcription factors, revealing that variations in the regulation of growth hormone biosynthesis play a critical role in the distinct ABA effects on root growth among the species. This research sets a new standard for comparative physiology by integrating comparative genomics and transcriptomics to uncover pathway divergences.

Notes on Real-Beam Ground Mapping with Monopulse Radar

The spatial awareness required of modern flight systems is facilitated by images generated by ground-mapping radar. In the forward and aft directions, synthetic aperture techniques are not viable, leaving us with enhancing real aperture radar data. Enhancing real aperture radar data with monopulse information can be achieved with any of several monopulse beam sharpening techniques. Two such algorithms are discussed.

Mapping and Synthesis of International Biomass Supply Assessments

This report, Mapping and Synthesis of International Biomass Supply Assessments (or Global Biomass Resource Assessment) is the first step in a long-term process to assemble data from around the globe into a virtual repository that can be updated and provide user-friendly access to the data. The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Biofuture Platform Initiative recommended that research be completed to “address the need for internationally accepted benchmarks quantifying sustainable biomass feedstock supplies.” To act upon the CEM Biofuture recommendation, in 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) commissioned Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to prepare this report as the primary deliverable for a one-year assignment to assemble data into a citable form that could help resolve the persistent question presented related to bioenergy policy, “Is there enough sustainable biomass?” In response to that query, this report includes information received by August 2024 from national CEM representatives, collaborators, and public sources on current and future sustainable biomass supplies in 62 nations, and subsequently documents (a) the approach used by ORNL to analyze and categorize the information received in a manner that enables aggregation and comparability; and (b) recommendations for next steps and guidelines to help others update and harmonize future assessments of global sustainable biomass supplies.

Validation Gap Assessment of a MAP Package Containing Fresh, Metallic Sodium-Cooled Fuel

This report describes an assessment of sodium fast reactor assemblies loaded within an AREVA MAP package. The assessment was performed to determine the state of the validation basis for sodium fast reactor fuel within a transportation package originally intended for fresh, light-water reactor fuel assemblies. A similar study is being simultaneously released (Cumberland, 2025), and substantial parts of the explanatory text are identical to that parallel work, which follows the same workflow. Both studies employed the TSUNAMI-3D and TSUNAMI-IP sequences from the SCALE code system to determine correlation coefficients between various configurations and databases of validation assessments.

Mapping Nitrogen Pathways in Organic Manure through GCAM

As the world has become more and more globalized, a need for a comprehensive and extensive modelling system that maps out the vast majority of processes and items around the world and can display how interdependent they are. Furthermore, such a model should be able to predict future processes and values such that it can guide scientific thinking and policy. This is where the importance of GCAM becomes so apparent. GCAM, the Global Change Analysis Model, that incorporates many different fields and can predict such a wide variety of processes. As the model expands and encompasses more fields and goes into greater detail, there is a need for previously incorporated processes to be further fleshed out. My project is dedicated to creating the organic nitrogen fertilizer pathway, such that there are two nitrogen fertilizer pathways, synthetic and organic (manure). Previously, only synthetic fertilizer was included, with all organic fertilizer (manure) being omitted from the model. Developing the synthetic path is relatively easy, as the process for creating synthetic fertilizer is an industrial process that has been perfected over decades, and thus has a very precise input/output coefficient of nitrogen, but determining that same coefficient for organic manure is much harder, because, well, digestion is not an industrial process, especially considering the many different types of animals have different processes, and a good amount of the manure they produce won’t be applied to the soil. I obtained data from the UN’s FAO on manure nitrogen applied to soil, and filled in the gaps and created many different visualizations to help comprehend the data. These findings will foster a greater understanding of nitrogen flows, which is crucial to fields like industrial agriculture, polluting runoff, and nitrifying bacteria and archaea in the soil.

A&L Annual Report: GRM-MAPS

Exploding Bridge Wire (EBW) is an important design for initiating detonators relevant to several LLNL systems. In such designs, a metal bridge wire is in direct contact with a porous secondary high explosive (HE), typically pressed to around 50% of its crystalline density. Initiation is believed to occur through shock waves generated when the bridge wire is made to explode via the rapid passing of a strong current pulse. Permeametry is an important characterization tool for the porous powdered HE (PETN, HMX, etc.) component in such devices. Such powders are well known to coarsen with age, with an accompanying deterioration in performance, which includes increased function time and sensitivity. Among various material characteristics, one that has been shown to correlate the most with such performance parameters is the flow-permeable surface area (FSSA), measured using air-permeametry. Commercially available permeametry apparatuses, such as that from Fisher Scientific or a more modern version from Micromeritics suffer from a few drawbacks, most notably as related to monitoring age-related changes in FSSA. This is because it requires re-compaction of the aged powder into the permeametry tube, which in most cases leads to an unwanted increase in FSSA. To address this and a few other shortcomings, we have been developing a modern version of the permeameter, Gee-Reinstein-Maiti Modern Air-Permeametry System (GRM-MAPS). In this report, we summarize progress made in FY25 toward perfecting and calibrating the instrument, which we aim at deploying within surveillance in FY26.

Multi-fidelity is the new annealing: Gradient-free learning of posterior densities via transport maps

To tackle concentrated, multi-modal Bayesian inference problems, we propose using an annealed importance sampling procedure. To do this, we form a sequence of annealed distributions and employ transport maps to act as a surrogate of each distribution. This process is demonstrated on a few examples, favorably showing its potential for efficiently parallelizing the process of PDE evaluations and allowing for surrogates that we can sample from exactly.

Grid Architecture Mapping to Understand Transformation (GAMUT): Methods and Framework Architecture

Grid architecture (GA) is a concept that was developed to address the need for a comprehensive view of power grid challenges. GA can be viewed as a relatively consistent and fixed high-level approach; however, for any instantiation of grid structures, a combinatorial explosion results from each lower-layer expansion. This constitutes the main challenge with GA—it is a grid architect’s view of the system, which might not be very informative at the implementation level. Grid Architecture Mapping to Understand Transformation (GAMUT project) seeks to bridge that gap by integrating subject matter expertise across GA structures, providing users who lack expertise in GA approaches with valuable insights and informational materials. GAMUT seeks to answer feasibility questions for the approach. System-level expectations are that a GA baseline needs to be established in order for GA to be the common framework to which any lower layer approach is tied. This report explores a potential information ingestion and documentation framework to support GAMUT. The main concepts that enable the solution domain of GAMUT are discussed, and examples are provided. The solution domain leverages already-existing technology and concepts related to GA, knowledge management, and other relevant areas. To assess GAMUT building blocks and the overall approach, a feasibility assessment is proposed, rooted in systems engineering and GA architecture evaluation concepts.

Grid Architecture Mapping to Understand Transformation (GAMUT): Concept Definition

The electric power system is undergoing significant transformation driven by changes in the generation mix, increasing reliance on information and communication technologies, evolving customer expectations, and a dynamic cyber-physical environment. To address these challenges, substantial investments will be made over the next decade to create a flexible, affordable, secure, reliable, and resilient electric system. In response, the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity is developing knowledge management tools aimed at systematically documenting technology pilots and demonstration projects. This initiative seeks to improve understanding of operating contexts, planning steps, and integration requirements for innovative grid technologies. The Department of Energy project leverages Grid Architecture principles to collect and organize insights into the interdependencies, requirements, and capabilities of various grid solutions. By employing a systematic approach, the project aims to perform a feasibility study for the development of a software tool that will support stakeholders, including regulators, transmission and distribution system operators, distributed energy resources aggregators, and technology providers. By offering a systematic, software-based framework to document technologies, understand their benefits and impacts, and inform deployment strategies, the proposed Grid Architecture Mapping to Understand Transformation (GAMUT) Tool is intended to reduce costs, enhance decision-making, and facilitate scaling and effective deployment of new technologies. The feasibility study will evaluate the technical and financial viability of the GAMUT Tool, identifying stakeholder needs and assessing risks and mitigation strategies. Ultimately, the GAMUT team aims to develop an initial minimal viable product, followed by staged improvements, to aid in the modernization of the electric grid, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
