The location of the poles of the scattering matrix

A number of recent results bearing on the direct problem are described. The results deal with exterior problems and relate geometric properties of the scattering obstacles to analytic properties of the associated scattering matrix.

Laser communication system for controlling several functions at a location remote to the laser

A multichannel laser remote control system is described. The system is used in areas where radio frequency, acoustic, and hardware control systems are unsatisfactory or prohibited and where line of sight is unobstructed. A modulated continuous wave helium-neon laser is used as the transmitter and a 360 degree light collector serves as the antenna at the receiver.

Location of vehicles using AM station broadcasting signals

Imaginary hyperbolic grid patterns formed by three local AM broadcasting stations were utilized in study. Each hyperbola is defined by constant phase difference between arbitrary signals integrally related to those coming from two stations. When three stations are used, grid is formed covering area with intersecting hyperbolas.

The utilization of ERTS-1-generated photographs in the evaluation of the Iranian playas as potential locations for economic and engineering development

The author has identified the following significant results. False-color composites made from ratioed and stretched transparencies, generated from CCT's of ERTS-1, have enhanced hydrologic and morphologic differences within the playa surficial sediments. A composite of ratios 4/6, 5/7,15/61 and 4/7 using blue, red, yellow, and green, respectively, was useful in separating wet, water, and dry areas in the salt crust and for delineating smooth and rough salt where relief was less than 20 cm.

The utilization of ERTS-1-generated photographs in the evaluation of the Iranian playas as potential locations for economic and engineering development

The author has identified the following significant results. Seasonal monitoring of hydrologic conditions at three playa lakes provides a basis for constructing an annual water inventory for these lakes. Although the extreme variation in the extent of playa lakes must be considered, the principal periods of their fluctuations are generally constant. Playa lakes provide an important water source for arid region needs, and their water can be diverted and stored for use during the long, hot, and dry summer. At their 1973 maxima, approximately 400 million cu m and 794 million cu m of water were available at the lakes at Qom and Neriz playas, respectively. These lakes adjoin areas of moderately dense population that have severe annual water deficits. A preliminary road alignment across the Great Kavir in north-central Iran has been prepared from an analysis of ERTS-1 images of that area from September 2, 1972, through May 12, 1973, a total of 6 scenes. An all-weather road constructed along this alignment could reduce the distance between points north and south of the Great Kavir by as much as 700 km.

NASA directory of observation station locations, volume 1

Geodetic information for NASA tracking stations and for observation stations cooperating in NASA geodetic satellite programs is presented. A Geodetic Data Sheet is provided for each station, giving the position of the station and describing briefly how it was established. Geodetic positions and geocentric coordinates of these stations are tabulated on local or major geodetic datums and on selected world geodetic systems. The principal tracking facilities used by NASA, including the Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network, the Deep Space Network, and several large radio telescopes are discussed. Positions of these facilities are tabulated on their local or national datums, the Mercury Spheroid 1960, the Modified Mercury Datum 1968, and the Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network System. Observation stations in the NASA Geodetic Satellites Program are included along with stations participating in the National Geodetic Satellite Program. Positions of these facilities are given on local or preferred major datums, and on the Modified Mercury Datum 1968.

An analytical study of the effects of jets located more than one jet diameter above a wing at subsonic speeds

A procedure has been developed to calculate the effects of blowing two jets over a swept tapered wing at low subsonic speeds. The algorithm used is based on a vortex lattice representation of the wing lifting surface and a line sink-source distribution to simulate the effects of the jet exhaust on the wing lift and drag. The method is limited to those cases where the jet exhaust does not intersect or wash the wing. The predictions of this relatively simple procedure are in remarkably good agreement with experimentally measured interference lift and interference induced drag.
