Space Flight Handbooks. Volume 3, Planetary Flight Handbook: Mars Stopover Missions Using Venus Swingbys - Part 6

This volume of the NASA Planetary Flight Handbook contains trajectory data to aid the mission analyst in the planning of stopover missions to Mars that employ the Venus swingby mode. Compared to other mission modes, the Venus swingbys yield substantial reductions in propulsive velocity and Earth entry speed requirements when employed as part of a round trip stopover mission. Conversely, the swingbys are at best, of marginal utility for one-way missions. Consequently, this Handbook has been tailored expressly for use in the planning of round trip missions. The relevant charts, graphs, and tabular data are presented for the totality of such missions, i.e., in terms of total round trip mission duration and stopover time at Mars. Recognizing, however, that within the context of round trip missions the single-leg data can be of importance in certain phases of the mission analyses, all such data has been preserved on a master magnetic tape. Copies of this tape will be made available to interested organizations.

Biomedical recording system

System collects medical data directly from patients and permanently records and displays several parameters - electrocardiograph, electroencephalograph, heart rate, respiration rate, auscultatory blood pressure, leg circumference changes, body temperature, and time. Components and operation of the system are described.

Conductive elastomeric extensometer

Bridge circuit, in which conductive elastomeric material is the variable leg, precisely measures surface area changes in the human body. Circuits are used singularly, or in quantity by adding elements and amplifier circuits. Elastomeric strips can be located in a form-fitting garment.

Hybrid TE panel test results

Test results are presented for a nine couple (3 x 3 array) thermoelectric panel of hybrid thermocouples. In the hybrid couple, a hollow cylinder of p-type Si-Ge is used to encapsulate a segmented PbTe/Si-Ge n-leg. The hybrid couple is predicted to offer a 10- to 15-percent improvement in performance relative to all Si-Ge couples. The efficiency, output power, and internal resistance of the panel as well as the resistances of the individual hybrid couples are presented as a function of test time covering a period of more than 2600 hours. Initial test results indicated hybrid couple performance consistent with design predictions. Extraneous resistance ranged from 20 to 25% of the hybrid couple thermoelectric resistance.

Movement of the Surveyor 3 spacecraft

It was concluded that the Surveyor 3 spacecraft moved, probably as a result of a sudden failure of the leg 3 shock absorber, between May 1967 and November 1969. The time at which the movement occurred can be estimated only from comparison of the shielded and unshielded portions of footpad 3 and a knowledge of the mechanism and rate of the process that tans the painted surface.

Removal of metabolic heat from man working in a protective suit

A water cooled garment was constructed and used to study the characteristics of independent regional cooling of the body in contrast to the current practice of uniform cooling. The cooling pads in the garment were grouped to provide independent control of water inlet temperatures and flow rates to six regions: head, upper torso, lower torso, arms, thighs, and lower legs. Experiments with and without the cooling suit were conducted with five test subjects standing and walking on a treadmill on selected schedules. Steady state and, to a lesser extent, transient characteristics were obtained.

The study of human venous system dynamics using hybrid computer modeling

A computer-based model of the cardiovascular system was created emphasizing effects on the systemic venous system. Certain physiological aspects were emphasized: effects of heart rate, tilting, changes in respiration, and leg muscular contractions. The results from the model showed close correlation with findings previously reported in the literature.

Helicopter payload gains utilizing water injection for hot day power augmentation

An analytical investigation was undertaken to assess the gains in helicopter mission payload through the use of water injection to produce power augmentation in an altitude-hot day environment. Substantial gains are shown for two representative helicopters, the UH-lH and CH-47B. The UH-lH payload increased 86.7 percent for a 50 n.mi. (92.6 km) radius mission involving two out-of-ground effect (OGE) hover take-offs of 2 minutes each at 5000 ft. (1525 m) 35 C ambient conditions. The CH-47B payload increased 49.5 percent for a 50 n.mi. (92.6 km) radius mission with sling loaded cargo as the outbound payload and a 3000 lb. (1360 kg) internal cargo on the return leg. The mission included two 4 min. OGE hovers at 6000 ft. (1830 m) 35 C. An improvement in take off performance and maximum performance climb also resulted as a consequence of the OGE hover capability and higher maximum power available.

Self-rotation of animate beings.

Consideration of the ability of both animals and humans to perform well-controlled self-rotation maneuvers while falling freely for short periods of time in the neighborhood of the earth's surface. Specifically, an analytical theory dealing with the righting movements of falling cats is constructed, and the validity of this theory is tested by reference to photographs. Pitch, yaw, and roll motions generated by arm and leg motions of humans are studied analytically and, in the case of yaw motions, experimentally.
