Community-Scale AHA Go Solar Initiative and Net Zero Initiative

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is a sovereign, federally acknowledged Indian Tribe. The Tribal Council created the Akwesasne Housing Authority (AHA) by ordinance in July 1984 and has designated the AHA as its agency for purposes of administering the Tribe’s Indian Housing Block Grant under the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act of 1996. The Go Solar project will install approximately 615 kilowatts (kW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities to serve housing related buildings on the Tribe’s reservation and use net metering programs to reduce the energy costs for AHA and Tribal members by up to $\$$4,417,501 over the life of the project. AHA will initiate four (4) net zero buildings: two (2) new net zero low-income housing buildings located at Sunrise Acres III, which include the Veterans Supportive Housing Building and the Seniors Supportive Housing building, and one (1) older, existing net zero building used by the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club (ABGC Building), and (1) Tribal Administration Building.

Industrial Carbon Capture from a Cement Facility Using the Cryocap™ FG Process

The objective of the project was to execute and complete front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies for commercial-scale, carbon capture projects that separate 95% of the total CO 2 emissions at an industrial facility, producing at least 100,000 metric tonnes/year of CO 2 for sequestration. The industrial facility selected is the Holcim (US) Ste. Genevieve cement manufacturing facility (the largest single kiln line in the world), while the carbon capture system selected is Pressure Swing Adsorption system (PSA) assisted Cryocap™ technology developed by Air Liquide. The industrial host site emits approximately 3 million tonnes CO 2 /year based on plant data from 2020-2022. The captured CO 2 will meet the requirements of transport (Pipeline Grade) and geological storage, and the geological storage facilities within 80 miles of the CO 2 source. The impact of the project on Environmental Justice and the regional economy was also analyzed.

Quantum Fourier Transform with Leakage Control

In circuit QED (cQED) systems, one can manipulate the cavity Fock states to use quantum processing unit (QPU). Since the coherence times of the Fock states are long, qudit based computation can be possible. One of the most basic gate that can be engineered in this cQED platform is the displacement gate, $D(\alpha)$. However, accessible number of qudit-levels is finite. The truncated displacement gate on the qudit is the source of theoretical error above the logical states and needs to be addressed. In this work, we monitor and minimize the leakage in qudit systems that involves displacement gate by introducing so-called `bumper' states and a modified cost function.

Advancing Construction through the Buildings Workforce: Preprint

Buildings are America's energy hogs, consuming over 70 percent of all electricity and over 50 percent of all natural gas produced across the country. Achieving a clean energy future requires us to reinvent how buildings manage energy resources and how consumers demand it. The U.S. Department of Energy is investing in a range of technological advancements that are paving the way to a future where buildings are no longer simply energy consumers, but rather are part of an integrated system that help manage energy resources in a way that supports the electricity grid. This paradigm shift presents an opportunity to increase the efficiency of the built environment, but will only be realized if we build a knowledgeable workforce to design, construct, and operate these high-performance buildings in step with the rate of technological advancement.

Efficient, direct compilation of SU(N) operations into SNAP & Displacement gates

We present a function which connects the parameter of a previously published short sequence of selective number-dependent arbitrary phase (SNAP) and displacement gates acting on a qudit encoded into the Fock states of a superconducting cavity, $V_k(\alpha)=D(\alpha)R_\pi(k)D(-2\alpha)R_\pi(k)D(\alpha)$ to the angle of the Givens rotation $G(\theta)$ on levels $|k\rangle,|k+1\rangle$ that sequence approximates, namely $\alpha=\Phi(\theta) = \frac{\theta}{4\sqrt{k+1}}$. Previous publications left the determination of an appropriate $\alpha$ to numerical optimization at compile time. The map $\Phi$ gives us the ability to compile directly any $d$-dimensional unitary into a sequence of SNAP and displacement gates in $O(d^3)$ complex floating point operations with low constant prefactor, avoiding the need for numerical optimization. Numerical studies demonstrate that the infidelity of the generated gate sequence $V_k$ per Givens rotation $G$ scales as approximately $O(\theta^6)$. We find numerically that the error on compiled circuits can be made arbitrarily small by breaking each rotation into $m$$\theta/m$ rotations, with the full $d\times d$ unitary infidelity scaling as approximately $O(m^{-4})$. This represents a significant reduction in the computational effort to compile qudit unitaries either to SNAP and displacement gates or to generate them via direct low-level pulse optimization via optimal control.
