Bypass Flow Model Implementation for VERA BWR

The Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) has been developed by the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of LWRs (CASL) over the past 10 years to address difficult problems facing commercial light-water reactors (LWRs). VERA comprises several high-fidelity physics packages, each of which models a different aspect of the reactor. These individual pieces are then linked to provide a fully coupled multiphysics solution for various LWR analyses.

Implementation and Results of Extended-MHD Post-processing of xRAGE Simulations

Magnetic fields are known to affect the evolution of conducting fluids via the J× B force, where J is the current density and B is the magnetic field. Typically, J× B in high energy density plasmas (HEDP) systems is considered small compared to the plasma pressure gradients. However, many experiments lie in a part of the parameter space where the plasma is indirectly affected via magnetization of the heat flux and charged particle transport. This is true even for initially unmagnetized plasmas, since misaligned density and temperature gradients can self-generate the so-called Biermann magnetic fields.

ASC FY2023 Implementation Plan Revision 0

The DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) is an integrated technical program for maintaining the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. The SSP incorporates nuclear test data, computational modeling and simulation, and experimental facilities to advance understanding of nuclear weapons. The suite of data analyzed comes from activities including previous nuclear tests, stockpile surveillance, experimental research, and development and engineering programs. This integrated national program requires the continued use of experimental facilities and the computational capabilities to support the SSP missions. These component parts, in addition to an appropriately scaled production capability, enable NNSA to support stockpile requirements. The ultimate goal of the SSP, and thus of the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Program, is to ensure that the U.S. maintains a safe, secure, and effective strategic deterrent.

Addressing Electric Aviation Infrastructure Cybersecurity Implementation

This technical report evaluates key considerations of cybersecurity systems in preparation for the electrification of both legacy and new aviation services. The objectives are to consider the landscape of components and interconnections, review sensitivities and the criticality of data and operations, and aim to understand the applicability of existing best practices or the need for new ones associated with the cybersecurity of electric charging systems for the aviation sector. Given the early stages of electric aviation deployment, developers have the opportunity to plan and integrate cybersecurity strategies into the complete electric aviation system during the initial stages of design and procurement and will benefit from employing a framework for continuous cybersecurity monitoring. This paper presents initial considerations of key cybersecurity strategies and their application to forthcoming electric aviation systems.

Implementation and Demonstration of P4 Software for Improving ICS Protocol Visibility and Control [Slides]

No prior enabling funded work applicable to this proposal. Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) is an open source, domain-specific programming language for network switching devices. P4 complements traditional Software Defined Networking (SDN) which is primarily concerned with the management of packets (e.g. routing/dropping decisions) rather than how each packet is processed. The introduction of P4 provided new capabilities (e.g. firewall, load balancing, enhanced security) but has primarily been deployed in data centers. This effort investigates ways to expand P4 into other niches such as ICS networks.

Implementation of TSL Evaluations Beyond the Incoherent Approximation [Slides]

This presentation discusses the motivation behind the project, which is to facilitate the production of TSL libraries that contain high fidelity physics including coherent inelastic effects, such as graphite and beryllium. High fidelity TSL libraries are of interest in various applications, for example in relation to neutron scattering instrument response analysis and directional biases (reflection) in neutronic analysis. In summation, the removal of typical approximations, in terms of incoherent, cubic, and atom site are examined. The application of generalized equations to crystalline graphite and beryllium TSL evaluations and the validation of data and data formats is also discussed.

Implementation of a feature selection algorithm in FARM to identify important state variables and time-invariant matrices

The FARM (Feasible Actuator Range Modifier) software module is a component of the RAVEN-based FORCE framework for analysis of Integrated Energy Systems (IES). FARM aids the HERON software module in the evaluation of the optimal dispatch for the different IES components. Set-point trajectories are required to meet limits on both production variables (i.e., the variables to be optimized such as the electrical power, the hydrogen production rate, etc.) and process variables tied to the service life of equipment (e.g., steam flowrate, vessel pressure, turbine firing temperature, etc.). To evaluate the feasibility of HERON generated set-points and to do so in an acceptable time, FARM employs reduced order models to represent the dynamic behavior of the systems to be dispatched. These surrogate models take the form of a linear dynamic system with sets of Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) matrices that are mapped to the system operating space. These matrices are derived from the trajectories of system state variables and system output variables during transients. The accuracy of LPV matrices depends on the selection of state variables. In previous reports, state variables were selected by adopting a complicated workflow requiring multiple software licenses and an advanced level of user expertise. In this report, a new workflow that automates the state variable selection process is presented. It significantly reduces the frequency of user interventions and does not require multiple software licenses. Each module in the new workflow is described in detail, and the input / output examples in each step of the workflow are provided. It was demonstrated that this workflow can greatly reduce the complexity of the state variable selection process, and that the updated FARM-Gamma and FARM-Delta validators can benefit from this workflow when solving the power dispatch problem of a representative IES test case. Finally, some code improvements that can further enhance the efficiency are suggested.

Hardware Implementation and Market Impacts of Grid-Supportive Functions in End-Use Loads

Grid-supportive loads (GSLs) are power electronics-based end-use loads that can provide frequency response and other grid services by autonomously adjusting their output power using local grid measurements. This report provides details on GSL hardware design options and their associated costs and benefits for multiple devices, including EV chargers, refrigerators, and heat pumps. We consider mechanisms to incentivize adoption of GSLs at scale and estimate the quantity of frequency response that can be procured with GSLs.

Implementation of Distributed Memory Computing in MOSAIC to Enable Large 3D Simulations of Irradiated Concrete

The concrete biological shield (CBS) of light-water reactors protects workers and the surrounding environment by absorbing neutron and gamma irradiation emitted from the reactor core. The radiation dose increases with the CBS’s operational time and, in the long term, becomes significant enough to raise the question of irradiation effects on concrete—and particularly on the structural integrity of the CBS. Irradiation-induced damage has been identified as one of the main degradation mechanisms in the CBS. Neutron radiation causes the swelling of aggregate-forming minerals at different rates and amplitudes depending on the mineral’s nature. Silicate-bearing minerals such as quartz are particularly sensitive to neutron radiation and experience up to 17.8% volumetric expansion. Aggregates comprise several minerals with different orientations and are, therefore, subject to cracking as a result of mismatch strains. Additionally, the swelling of aggregates creates significant stresses in the surrounding cement paste matrix, which also results in crack formation. In parallel with the collection of characterization and irradiation test data, development of modeling and simulation tools for irradiated concrete is ongoing with the support of the US Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy’s Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) program. This effort resulted in the development and application of the fast-Fourier transform (FFT)–based code Microstructure-Oriented Scientific Analysis of Irradiated Concrete (MOSAIC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
