Snowmass 2021 cross frontier report: Dark matter complementarity

The fundamental nature of Dark Matter is a central theme of the Snowmass 2021 process, extending across all frontiers. In the last decade, advances in detector technology, analysis techniques and theoretical modeling have enabled a new generation of experiments and searches while broadening the types of candidates we can pursue. Over the next decade, there is great potential for discoveries that would transform our understanding of dark matter. In the following, we outline a road map for discovery developed in collaboration among the frontiers. A strong portfolio of experiments that delves deep, searches wide, and harnesses the complementarity between techniques is key to tackling this complicated problem, requiring expertise, results, and planning from all Frontiers of the Snowmass 2021 process.

An Arbitrary Time Interval Generator Base on Vernier Clocks with 0.67 ps Adjustable Steps Implemented in FPGA

In TDC testing or timing system implementation tasks, it is often desirable to generate signal pulses with fine adjustable time intervals. In delay cell-based schemes, the time adjustment steps are limited by the propagation delays of the cells, which are typically 15 to 20 picoseconds per step and are sensitive to temperature and operating voltage. In this document, a purely digital scheme based on two vernier clocks with small frequency difference generated using cascaded PLL is reported. The scheme is tested in two families of low-cost FPGA and 0.67 and 0.97 picoseconds adjustable steps of the time intervals are achieved.

IROS 2023 Workshop Report: Draft Guidelines on Manufacturing Procedures, Test Methods and Reporting for Soft Robotics

Soft roboticists are facing challenges with reproducibility, which prevents researchers from making holistic comparisons to prior work, impedes full understanding of results, and forces the need to “reinvent the wheel,” delaying fundamental advances. Reproducibility of results is key to advancing science as well as achieving technology transfer from research laboratories to industrial applications. Recently, a discussion-based workshop dedicated to the topic, “Developing Standard Testing and Reporting Guidelines for Soft Robotics,” was held at IROS 2023 in Detroit, MI. The purpose of this document is to record a set of recommendations and voluntary draft guidelines for soft roboticists concerning fabrication/manufacturing, test procedures, and reporting, which were collectively developed at the workshop. Together as a community, we hope to improve the reporting standards of soft robotics and drive the field as a whole toward more rigorous research practices.

Comment on "An implementation of neural simulation-based inference for parameter estimation in ATLAS''

The paper titled "An implementation of neural simulation-based inference for parameter estimation in ATLAS" by the ATLAS collaboration (arXiv:2412.01600v1 [hep-ex]) describes the implementation of neural simulation-based inference for a measurement analysis performed by ATLAS. The uncertainties in the analysis arising from the finiteness of the simulated datasets are estimated using a novel double-bootstrapping technique described in that work. In the present comment, it is claimed and demonstrated, using a toy example, that the double-bootstrapping technique does not actually capture the aforementioned uncertainties.

Installation and Commissioning of the SBC-LAr10 Detector at Fermilab

This report describes the progress towards a scalable detector capable of quasi-background-free detection of sub-keV nuclear recoils under DOE award DE-SC0024254. Work supported by this award follows two distinct thrusts: (1) the first calibration of sensitivity to sub-keV nuclear recoils in a liquid-noble bubble chamber, based on data taken in a prototype liquid xenon bubble chamber run previously at Northwestern University, and (2) the successful assembly and installation of the 10-kg liquid argon bubble chamber SBC-LAr10 in the MINOS underground area at Fermilab. These accomplishments have paved the way for the precision calibration of SBC-LAr10 in the MINOS underground area at Fermilab in the coming year, which will use novel calibration techniques to measure the potential of the liquid noble bubble chamber technology for the detection of GeV-scale dark matter particles and the measurement of coherent elastic nuclear scattering by reactor anti-neutrinos (CEvNS).

FEM Modeling and Simulation of 2-D High Specific Heat Nb 3 Sn Wires

In the past few years, new high specific heat Nb 3 Sn wires have gained much focus at FNAL. Indeed, they have proved to be more stable against thermal perturbations with respect to standard wires. Nevertheless, a trade off exists between their thermal efficiency and production feasibility. In this report I describe the thermal and structural models that I have developed by exploiting ANSYS Mechanical APDL ® , which I got acquainted with at the beginning of my training. The aim has been to optimize the location of high specific heat elements in order to obtain an optimal thermal stability, while minimizing the risk of wire breakage during drawing. FEM results are compared with experimental ones made beforehand. Other minimum quench energy (MQE) thermal models have been developed for expected new experimental results. New data may improve the understanding of the embedded physical uncertainties in the model.

Commissioning of the trigger system for the ICARUS T600 LAr-TPC detector in SBN Program

The ICARUS experiment at Fermilab is the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino Program (SBN), aimed at studing the neutrino oscillation to find a fourth type of neutrino, called sterile neutrino. A key component for this detector is the trigger system, which aims to identify and isolate the physical interactions from the background events. In this framework my internship program was dedicated to the development of trigger logic and trigger inhibit mechanism in order to select the genuine neutrino interaction and to guarantee a correct functioning of the readout system. These two steps, that represent a part of the commissioning of the trigger system, were implemented with LabVIEW Software. The obtained results are a fundamental step towards a succesful activation of the detector in the next few months.

Design of a remote-controlled mount for IOTA’s magnet undulator

The SLAC undulator is essential for studies of synchrotron radiation produced by a single electron in IOTA. Since IOTA is meant for different experiments, the undulator is not always needed, so it must be pushed and pulled back depending upon the nature of the experiment. Moving the undulator manually result in significant time loss about 30 minutes for the controlled access, and about 30 minutes to achieve beam injector in IOTA. Because the operation is done manually is not easy to ensure a good repeatability of the undulator position. That’s why IOTA’s team decided to set-up a completely remote-controlled mount.

Development of the photon detector system for DUNE Vertical Drift TPC

The term DUNE stands for ”Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment”. The program will be carried out as an international, leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino physics and proton decay studies, indeed, the main objective of this experiment is to study long-baseline neutrino oscillations (fig. 1.1)(experiments carried out over the past half century have revealed that neutrinos are found in three states, or flavors, and can transform from one flavor into another. These results indicate that each neutrino flavor state is a mixture of three different nonzero mass states). Moreover, this studies will help us discover more about why matter is more abundant than antimatter (the so called matter-antimatter asymmetry) and DUNE’s capability to collect and analyze neutrino signal from a supernova within the Milky Way would provide a rare opportunity to peer inside a newly formed neutron star and potentially witness the birth of a Black Hole.

Preparation for DM searches with high Q SRF cavities

This work focuses on the preparatory for two dark matter searches based on high Q SRF cavities. In the context of the SERAPH experiment I participated to experimental work of characterizing the cavity at mK temperature and subsequently analyzed the data collected. For the SHADE experiment, I worked on the preparation of the data analysis starting from the collection of simulated data and built a flexible framework to analyze them. The goal of this report is to present my contribution to these two experiments that are being investigated at Fermilab by the Physics Sensing group at SQMS.

COMSOL Simulation of Optical Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) Resonator

We simulate whispering-gallery mode coupling in a Si$_3$N$_4$--LiNbO$_3$ waveguide--resonator system using 2D and 3D COMSOL models. Results show that the TM$_{00}$ mode couples far more efficiently than TE$_{00}$ due to weaker confinement and stronger evanescent overlap, with critical coupling reached near a 0.20~µm gap. The study highlights polarization dependence, geometric sensitivity, and birefringence as key factors shaping resonant behavior.

Measurement of the Kicker transient magnetic field in the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab

The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab has the main goal to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_µ = \frac{g−2}{2}$ to a precision of 140 parts per billion (ppb), which means 4 times improvement in precision with respect to the final result from BNL: a µ (expt.B N L) = 11659208.0(6.3)×10 −10 (540 ppb) So far only RUN1 data have been analyzed showing the following improvement: a µ (expt.RU N1) = 116592061×10 −11 (465 ppb) In this report I summarize the work done at the g-2 experiment during my summer internship at Fermilab where I worked on the attempt to estimate the kicker transient field contribution in the Muon g-2 experiment.

AI-Assisted Conceptual Development of a Pre-Geometric Cosmological Model - An Exercise in AI-Assisted Conceptual Framework Generation, Paper III: Cosmological Structure and Predictions

This paper develops the cosmological consequences of the replication-driven cosmogenesis framework introduced in Paper I and the emergent geometric structure established in Paper II. After the replication epoch freezes out, the coherent sector occupies a finite spectral band and contains a population of excited states. The relaxation of these excited coherent configurations does not produce coherent radiation; instead, all released energy flows into the incoherent substrate, where the randomizer acts as a rapid phase-scrambling mechanism. This process generates an effectively thermal radiation bath, providing a natural reheating mechanism that requires neither inflaton oscillations nor scalar-field potentials, and can be contrasted with standard scenarios of nonperturbative reheating dynamics. Subsequent symmetry-breaking transitions in the coherent vacuum inject additional radiation, yielding a multi-stage thermal history with well-defined energy transfers. We derive the effective equations of state for each component—the cosmological vacuum, the coherent vacuum, and the radiation bath—and show how their interplay produces an FRW-like expansion. The discrete sequence of coherent-state relaxations imprints a distinctive multi-peaked stochastic gravitational-wave background, whose spectral structure reflects the underlying hierarchy of coherent frequencies. Potential observational signatures in the LISA and mid-band frequency ranges are highlighted, providing concrete avenues to test this replication-based cosmological framework in the context of standard cosmological gravitational-wave backgrounds and LISA-oriented forecasts.

AI-Assisted Conceptual Development of a Pre-Geometric Cosmological Model - An Exercise in AI-Assisted Conceptual Framework Generation, Paper II: Local Geometry and Metric Structure

This paper develops the geometric sector of the replication-driven cosmogenesis framework introduced in Paper I. Starting from a pre-geometric spectral substrate and a minimal set of replication axioms, we show how coherent self-replicating units generate a spatial adjacency graph whose continuum limit acquires an effective Riemannian structure. The replication dynamics determines a characteristic correlation length that seeds the local metric, while overlap relations among coherent units produce an isotropic neighborhood geometry with an emergent dimensionality $d_{\rm eff}\simeq 3$ across a broad range of replication factors. As replication slows and causal order stabilizes, a limiting signal speed $c_\ast$ appears, providing the basis for the Lorentzian structure of spacetime without assuming a pre-existing light cone. We derive conditions under which the adjacency graph converges to a smooth three-dimensional manifold, describe the transition from Euclidean to Lorentzian propagation, and identify geometric invariants controlled by the replication parameters. This work establishes the geometric and causal layer of the replication cosmogenesis program, bridging the spectral axioms of Paper I to the cosmological dynamics explored in Paper III.

AI-Assisted Conceptual Development of a Pre-Geometric Cosmological Model - An Exercise in AI-Assisted Conceptual Framework Generation, Paper I: Foundations and Replication Dynamics

We develop a pre-geometric cosmological framework in which existence is identified with a finite amount of unstructured energy possessing vibration as its only intrinsic property. This vibrational substrate occupies an open, bounded spectral interval $(\omega_{\min},\omega_{\max})$, ensuring finiteness of total energy and excluding infinitely stable configurations. The substrate evolves under two fundamental and competing tendencies---excitation, which amplifies coherence, and randomization, which scrambles it. Their balance produces a metastable unstructured regime in which rare fluctuations may form long-lived self-consistent spectral configurations. Because the substrate is finite and subject to competing order--disorder dynamics, no coherent configuration can be perpetually stable. We show that the only mechanism capable of sustaining long-lived organization is a replication instability: a coherent unit may reproduce into multiple offspring according to a general $1\!\to n$ rule. Replication consumes energy from the finite substrate, breaks the metastable symmetry, and induces a discrete notion of event time through the replication tick $\Delta\tau$. Temporal succession is defined through correlation ordering of spectral microstates, producing an intrinsic pre-causal structure. The compactness of the spectral domain imposes minimal and maximal timescales, bounds the internal coherence of emergent units, and limits their proliferation. These spectral constraints serve as precursors for the emergence of geometry, adjacency, and a limiting propagation speed, developed in subsequent papers of this series. Paper I provides the foundational axioms (PG1--PG9) governing the spectral substrate, its metastable dynamics, the formation of coherent units, and the necessity of replication, establishing a fully pre-geometric stage from which causal and geometric structure naturally emerge.

Design of Transportation Frames for 650 MHz Cavities and High Power Couplers

This work presents the design of a transportation frame system for 650~MHz superconducting radio frequency cavities with high power couplers. Modal analysis identified the coupler antenna as the critical component with a 38~Hz natural frequency, leading to a dual-frame design with wire rope isolators that achieves 82\% vibration attenuation at the critical frequency. The system meets all transportation requirements, fits within standard shipping crates, and maintains structural integrity under 12g shock loads.
