Enhancing the Electrocatalysis of LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 by Introducing Lithium Deficiency for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NCM523), as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, has attracted considerable attention and been successfully commercialized for decades. NCM is also a promising electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the catalytic activity is highly correlated to its structure. In this paper, we successfully obtain NCM523 with three different structures: spinel NCM synthesized at low temperature (LT-NCM), disordered NCM (DO-NCM) with lithium deficiency obtained at high temperature, and layered hexagonal NCM at high temperature (HT-NCM). By introducing lithium deficiency to tune the valence state of transition metals in NCM from Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ , DO-NCM exhibits the best catalytic activity with the lowest onset potential (~1.48 V) and Tafel slope (~85.6 mV dec -1 ), whereas HT-NCM exhibits the worst catalytic activity with the highest onset potential (~1.63 V) and Tafel slope (~241.8 mV dec -1 ).

Effects of tacticity and chiral center-to-dipole distance on mesogen-free liquid crystalline self-assembly of sulfonyl-containing comb-like polymers

In this report, new approaches were implemented to achieve novel ferroelectric liquid crystalline self-assembly in mesogen-free comb-like isotactic polyoxypropylenes (iPOPs) bearing mono- or di-sulfonyl groups, which have potential to exhibit high spontaneous polarization for applications in advanced electronic devices. iPOPs with n-alkylsulfonylpentylthioether side chains (iPOP-SC 5 SO 2 C n , where C n is the alkyl tail with n being either 12 or 8) were prepared via a post-polymerization substitution reaction from isotactic poly[(R)-(–)-epichlorohydrin]. Here, the effects of main-chain tacticity, chiral center-to-dipole distance, number of sulfonyl dipoles per side chain, and n-alkyl tail length on the liquid crystalline self-assembly behavior were investigated by comparing iPOPs with their atactic counterparts. First, when the sulfonyl dipole was placed far away from the chiral center in iPOP-SC 5 SO 2 C n compared with our previously reported isotactic polyethers with n-alkylsulfonyl side chains (iPOP-SO 2 C n ), the dipole–dipole interactions among the side chains decreased, which led to more liquid crystalline phases. Smectic E (SmE) and A (SmA) phases were observed after crystal melting; however, the main-chain chiral center was found to have an insignificant effect on the liquid crystalline assembly when compared to the atactic samples. Second, the longer C n tails increased the transition temperatures as a result of stronger van der Waals interactions. Third, after the thioether linkage in the side chain was oxidized into the sulfonyl group, the chiral center–dipole and dipole–dipole interactions in the resultant polymers (i.e., iPOP-SO 2 C 5 SO 2 C n ) enhanced. As a result, the liquid crystalline phase transitions (i.e., crystal → SmE → SmA → I) were pushed to higher temperatures. The knowledge gained in this study will help us further design and achieve the ferroelectric smectic C* phase in mesogen-free comb-like sulfonylated liquid crystalline polymers.

Search for low mass vector resonances decaying into quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for low mass narrow vector resonances decaying into quark-antiquark pairs is presented. The analysis is based on data collected in 2017 with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $\mathrm{41.1 fb^{-1}}$. The results of this analysis are combined with those of an earlier analysis based on data collected at the same collision energy in 2016, corresponding to $\mathrm{35.9 fb^{-1}}$. Signal candidates will be recoiling against initial state radiation and are identified as energetic, large-radius jets with two pronged substructure. The invariant jet mass spectrum is probed for a potential narrow peaking signal over a smoothly falling background. No evidence for such resonances is observed within the mass range of 50-450 GeV. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the coupling of narrow resonances to quarks, as a function of the resonance mass. For masses between 50 and 300 GeV these are the most sensitive limits to date. This analysis extends the earlier search to a mass range of 300-450 GeV, which is probed for the first time with jet substructure techniques.

Unconventional Hysteretic Transition in a Charge Density Wave

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe 4 . By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observe that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) phase of EuTe 4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly coupled 3D systems. Furthermore, our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.

SZ3: A Modular Framework for Composing Prediction-Based Error-Bounded Lossy Compressors

Today's scientific simulations require a significant reduction of data volume because of extremely large amounts of data they produce and the limited I/O bandwidth and storage space. Here, error-bounded lossy compression has been considered one of the most effective solutions to the above problem. In practice, however, the best-fit compression method often needs to be customized or optimized in particular because of diverse characteristics in different datasets and various user requirements on the compression quality and performance. In this paper, we address this issue with a novel modular, composable compression framework named SZ3. Our contributions are four-folds. (1) We develop SZ3 which features an innovative modular abstraction for the prediction-based compression framework, such that compression modules can be plugged in easily to create new compressors based on characteristics of data and user requirements. (2) We create a new compression pipeline by SZ3 for GAMESS data, which significantly improves the compression ratios over state-of-the-art compressors. (3) We develop an adaptive compression pipeline by SZ3 for APS data with minimal efforts, which leads to the best rate-distortion among all existing error-bounded lossy compressors for any bit-rate. (4) We compare the sustainability of SZ3 with leading error-bounded prediction-based compressors, and then demonstrate the necessity of diverse pipelines by integrating and evaluating several compression pipelines on diverse scientific datasets from multiple disciplines. Experiments show that SZ3 incurs very limited overhead in compressor integration and our customized compression pipelines lead to up to 20% improvement in compression ratios under the same data distortion, when compared with the best existing approach.

Search for direct pair production of supersymmetric partners to the $\tau$ lepton in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV} $

A search is presented for $\tau$ slepton pairs produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The search is carried out in events containing two $\tau$ leptons in the final state, on the assumption that each $\tau$ slepton decays primarily to a $\tau$ lepton and a neutralino. Events are considered in which each $\tau$ lepton decays to one or more hadrons and a neutrino, or in which one of the $\tau$ leptons decays instead to an electron or a muon and two neutrinos. The data, collected with the CMS detector in 2016 and 2017, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77.2 fb$^{-1}$. The observed data are consistent with the standard model background expectation. The results are used to set 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross section for $\tau$ slepton pair production in various models for $\tau$ slepton masses between 90 and 200 GeV and neutralino masses of 1, 10, and 20 GeV. In the case of purely left-handed $\tau$ slepton production and decay to a $\tau$ lepton and a neutralino with a mass of 1 GeV, the strongest limit is obtained for a $\tau$ slepton mass of 125 GeV at a factor of 1.14 larger than the theoretical cross section.

A multi-dimensional search for new heavy resonances decaying to boosted $\text{W}$ $\text{W}$, $\text{W}$ $\text{Z}$, or $\text{Z}$ $\text{Z}$ boson pairs in the dijet final state at 13 $\text {Te}\text{V}$

A search in an all-jet final state for new massive resonances decaying to $\text{ W }{}{}\text{ W }{}{}$, $\text{ W }{}{}\text{ Z }{}{}$, or $\text{ Z }{}{}\text{ Z }{}{}$ boson pairs using a novel analysis method is presented. The analysis is performed on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.3 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 $\text {Te}\text {V}$. The search is focussed on potential narrow-width resonances with masses above 1.2 $\text {Te}\text {V}$, where the decay products of each $\text{ W }{}{}$ or $\text{ Z }{}{}$ boson are expected to be collimated into a single, large-radius jet. The signal is extracted using a three-dimensional maximum likelihood fit of the two jet masses and the dijet invariant mass, yielding an improvement in sensitivity of up to 30% relative to previous search methods. No excess is observed above the estimated standard model background. In a heavy vector triplet model, spin-1 ${\text {Z}}^{\prime }$ and ${\text {W}}^{\prime }$ resonances with masses below 3.5 and 3.8 $\text {Te}\text {V}$, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level. In a bulk graviton model, upper limits on cross sections are set between 27 and 0.2 $\,\text {fb}$ for resonance masses between 1.2 and 5.2 $\text {Te}\text {V}$, respectively. The limits presented in this paper are the best to date in the dijet final state.

Measurement of differential cross sections and charge ratios for t -channel single top quark production in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ $\,\text {Te}\text {V}$

A measurement is presented of differential cross sections for t-channel single top quark and antiquark production in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$ by the CMS experiment at the LHC. From a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, events containing one muon or electron and two or three jets are analysed. The cross section is measured as a function of the top quark transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}} $), rapidity, and polarisation angle, the charged lepton $p_{\mathrm{T}} $ and rapidity, and the $p_{\mathrm{T}} $ of the $\text {W}{}{}$ boson from the top quark decay. In addition, the charge ratio is measured differentially as a function of the top quark, charged lepton, and $\text {W}{}{}$ boson kinematic observables. The results are found to be in agreement with standard model predictions using various next-to-leading-order event generators and sets of parton distribution functions. Additionally, the spin asymmetry, sensitive to the top quark polarisation, is determined from the differential distribution of the polarisation angle at parton level to be $0.440 \pm 0.070$, in agreement with the standard model prediction.

Search for dark matter particles produced in association with a Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{\mathrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV

A search for dark matter (DM) particles is performed using events with a Higgs boson candidate and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The search is performed in five Higgs boson decay channels: h$ \to \mathrm{b\bar{b}}$, $\gamma\gamma$, $\tau^{+}\tau^{-}$, W$^{+}$W$^{-}$, and ZZ and the results from the individual channels are combined to maximize the sensitivity of the analysis. No significant excess over the expected standard model background is observed in any of the five channels or in their combination. Limits are set on DM production in the context of two simplified models. The results are also interpreted in terms of a spin-independent DM-nucleon scattering cross section and compared to those from direct-detection DM experiments. This is the first search for DM particles produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W or Z bosons, and the first statistical combination based on five Higgs boson decay channels.

Search for a heavy Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons in proton-proton collisions at s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV

A search for a heavy Higgs boson in the mass range from 0.2 to 3.0 TeV, decaying to a pair of W bosons, is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The W boson pair decays are reconstructed in the 2$\ell$2$\nu$ and $\ell\nu$2q final states (with $\ell =$ e or $\mu$). Both gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production of the signal are considered. Interference effects between the signal and background are also taken into account. The observed data are consistent with the standard model (SM) expectation. Combined upper limits at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction exclude a heavy Higgs boson with SM-like couplings and decays up to 1870 GeV. Exclusion limits are also set in the context of a number of two-Higgs-doublet model formulations, further reducing the allowed parameter space for SM extensions.

Measurement of top quark pair production in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions at s$$ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the inclusive cross section of top quark pair production in association with a Z boson using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC is performed. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 77.5 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS experiment during 2016 and 2017. The measurement is performed using final states containing three or four charged leptons (electrons or muons), and the Z boson is detected through its decay to an oppositely charged lepton pair. The production cross section is measured to be σ($ \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{Z} $) = 0.95 ± 0.05 (stat) ± 0.06 (syst) pb. For the first time, differential cross sections are measured as functions of the transverse momentum of the Z boson and the angular distribution of the negatively charged lepton from the Z boson decay. The most stringent direct limits to date on the anomalous couplings of the top quark to the Z boson are presented, including constraints on the Wilson coefficients in the framework of the standard model effective field theory.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for heavy Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for additional scalar (H) or pseudoscalar (A) Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set analyzed corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Final states with one or two charged leptons are considered. The invariant mass of the reconstructed top quark pair system and variables that are sensitive to the spin of the particles decaying into the top quark pair are used to search for signatures of the H or A bosons. The interference with the standard model top quark pair background is taken into account. A moderate signal-like deviation compatible with an A boson with a mass of 400 GeV is observed with a global significance of 1.9 standard deviations. New stringent constraints are reported on the strength of the coupling of the hypothetical bosons to the top quark, with the mass of the bosons ranging from 400 to 750 GeV and their total relative width from 0.5 to 25%. The results of the search are also interpreted in a minimal supersymmetric standard model scenario. Values of $m_\mathrm{A}$ from 400 to 700 GeV are probed, and a region with values of $\tan\beta$ below 1.0 to 1.5, depending on $m_\mathrm{A}$, is excluded at 95% confidence level.

Production of Λ c + baryons in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum ( p T ) spectra of inclusively produced Λ c + baryons are measured via the exclusive decay channel Λ c + → p K – π + using the CMS detector at the LHC. Spectra are measured as a function of transverse momentum in proton-proton ( p p ) and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The measurement is performed within the Λ c + rapidity interval | y | < 1 in the p T range of 5–20 GeV/ c in p p and 10–20 GeV/ c in PbPb collisions. The observed yields of Λ c + for p T of 10–20 GeV/ c suggest a suppression in central PbPb collisions compared to p p collisions scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions. The Λ c + / D 0 production ratio in p p collisions is compared to theoretical models. In PbPb collisions, this ratio is consistent with the result from p p collisions in their common p T range.
