Technology developments for laminar boundary layer control on subsonic transport aircraft

The development of laminar flow technology for commercial transport aircraft is discussed and illustrated in a review of studies undertaken in the NASA Aircraft Energy Efficiency (ACEE) program since 1976. The early history of laminar flow control (LFC) techniques and natural laminar flow (NLF) airfoil designs is traced, and the aims of ACEE are outlined. The application of slotted structures, composites, and electron beam perforated metals in supercritical LFC airfoils, wing panels, and leading edge systems is examined; wind tunnel and flight test results are summarized; studies of high altitude ice effects are described; and hybrid (LFC/NLF designs are characterized. Drawings and photographs are provided.

Optimal Operation of Soft Open Points in Active Distribution Networks Under Three-Phase Unbalanced Conditions

The asymmetric integration of distributed generators (DGs) exacerbates the three-phase unbalanced condition in distribution systems. The serious unbalanced operation causes inefficient utilization of network assets and security risks in the system. Soft open point (SOP) is a flexible power electronic device which can achieve accurate active and reactive power flow control to balance the power flow among phases. This paper proposes an SOPs-based operation strategy for unbalanced active distribution networks (ADNs). By regulating the operation of SOPs, the strategy can reduce power losses and simultaneously mitigate the three-phase unbalance of the upper-level grid. Semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation is advocated to convert the original non-convex, nonlinear optimization model into an SDP formulation, which can be efficiently solved to meet the requirement of rapid adjustment. Case studies are conducted on the modified IEEE 33-node and IEEE 123-node distribution system to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed strategy.

Control of airborne infectious disease in buildings: Evidence and research priorities

The evolution of SARS-CoV-2 virus has resulted in variants likely to be more readily transmitted through respiratory aerosols, underscoring the increased potential for indoor environmental controls to mitigate risk. Use of tight-fitting face masks to trap infectious aerosol in exhaled breath and reduce inhalation exposure to contaminated air is of critical importance for disease control. Administrative controls including the regulation of occupancy and interpersonal spacing are also important, while presenting social and economic challenges. Indoor engineering controls including ventilation, exhaust, air flow control, filtration, and disinfection by germicidal ultraviolet irradiation can reduce reliance on stringent occupancy restrictions. However, the effects of controls-individually and in combination-on reducing infectious aerosol transfer indoors remain to be clearly characterized to the extent needed to support widespread implementation by building operators. We review aerobiologic and epidemiologic evidence of indoor environmental controls against transmission and present a quantitative aerosol transfer scenario illustrating relative differences in exposure at close-interactive, room, and building scales. We identify an overarching need for investment to implement building controls and evaluate their effectiveness on infection in well-characterized and real-world settings, supported by specific, methodological advances. Finally, improved understanding of engineering control effectiveness guides implementation at scale while considering occupant comfort, operational challenges, and energy costs.

Analysis of a solar collector field water flow network

A number of methods are presented for minimizing the water flow variation in the solar collector field for the Solar Building Test Facility at the Langley Research Center. The solar collector field investigated consisted of collector panels connected in parallel between inlet and exit collector manifolds to form 12 rows. The rows were in turn connected in parallel between the main inlet and exit field manifolds to complete the field. The various solutions considered included various size manifolds, manifold area change, different locations for the inlets and exits to the manifolds, and orifices or flow control valves. Calculations showed that flow variations of less than 5 percent were obtainable both inside a row between solar collector panels and between various rows.

Gas levitator having fixed levitation node for containerless processing

A method and apparatus is disclosed for levitating a specimen of material in a containerless environment at a stable nodal position independent of gravity. An elongated levitation tube has a contoured interior in the form of convergent section, constriction, and a divergent section in which the levitation node is created. A gas flow control means prevents separation of flow from the interior walls in the region of a specimen. The apparatus provides for levitating and heating the specimen simultaneously by combustion of a suitable gas mixture combined with an inert gas.

Conserving Purge Gases

Two-step flow control adjusts to dimensional changes in purged equipment. Two pressure actuated valves provide two-step control. When turbopump starts, helium flows through both valves. As pump operates its parts expand, clearance decrease and back pressure builds up on valves. At preset back pressure value, one valve closes, reducing helium flow.

Operating characteristics of a 10 kW xenon ion propulsion module

Performance testing of a two-engine functional model xenon ion propulsion module is described. Use of highly modified J-series 30 cm ion engines reconfigured for xenon propellant, a computer controlled operating system, and precise flow control system are shown to result in very reliable ion module operation at high input power levels. Ion engine operation at a nominal 4.0 ampere beam current and 30.0 volt discharge gives a specific impulse of 3310 sec, a total engine efficiency of 64.3 percent, and a thrust-to-power ratio of 39.5 mN/kW at an input power level of 5.10 kW. These modified J series ion engines are shown to be capable of throttling over an 8:1 range from a power level of 5.48 kW at 3285 sec to a power level of 0.70 kW at 1856 sec. In addition, complete ion engine performance mapping of important system level parameters such as thrust, specific impulse, efficiency and thrust-to-power ratio are presented.

Overview of CFD Validation Experiments for Circulation Control Applications at NASA

Circulation control is a viable active flow control approach that can be used to meet the NASA Subsonic Fixed Wing project s Cruise Efficient Short Take Off and Landing goals. Currently, circulation control systems are primarily designed using empirical methods. However, large uncertainty in our ability to predict circulation control performance has led to the development of advanced CFD methods. This paper provides an overview of a systematic approach to developing CFD tools for basic and advanced circulation control applications. This four-step approach includes "Unit", "Benchmar", "Subsystem", and "Complete System" experiments. The paper emphasizes the ongoing and planned 2-D and 3-D physics orientated experiments with corresponding CFD efforts. Sample data are used to highlight the challenges involved in conducting circulation control computations and experiments.

Thermal Spray Formation of Polymer Coatings

This innovation forms a sprayable polymer film using powdered precursor materials and an in-process heating method. This device directly applies a powdered polymer onto a substrate to form an adherent, mechanically-sound, and thickness-regulated film. The process can be used to lay down both fully dense and porous, e.g., foam, coatings. This system is field-deployable and includes power distribution, heater controls, polymer constituent material bins, flow controls, material transportation functions, and a thermal spray apparatus. The only thing required for operation in the field is a power source. Because this method does not require solvents, it does not release the toxic, volatile organic compounds of previous methods. Also, the sprayed polymer material is not degraded because this method does not use hot combustion gas or hot plasma gas. This keeps the polymer from becoming rough, porous, or poorly bonded.

High-Reynolds Number Active Blowing Semi-Span Force Measurement System Development

Recent wind-tunnel tests at the NASA Langley Research Center National Transonic Facility utilized high-pressure bellows to route air to the model for evaluating aircraft circulation control. The introduction of these bellows within the Sidewall Model Support System significantly impacted the performance of the external sidewall mounted semi-span balance. As a result of this impact on the semi-span balance measurement performance, it became apparent that a new capability needed to be built into the National Transonic Facility s infrastructure to allow for performing pressure tare calibrations on the balance in order to properly characterize its performance under the influence of static bellows pressure tare loads and bellows thermal effects. The objective of this study was to design both mechanical calibration hardware and an experimental calibration design that can be employed at the facility in order to efficiently and precisely perform the necessary loadings in order to characterize the semi-span balance under the influence of multiple calibration factors (balance forces/moments and bellows pressure/temperature). Using statistical design of experiments, an experimental design was developed allowing for strategically characterizing the behavior of the semi-span balance for use in circulation control and propulsion-type flow control testing at the National Transonic Facility.

System and method for occupancy-driven register airflow control

An HVAC register airflow control system and an air flow control method are provided. A housing of the system is in fluid communication with an air source for supplying an airflow. The housing includes an air outlet to the enclosed space. A detection sensor detects occupancy information of the enclosed space. A controller generates a control signal based on the occupancy information and controls the shape change of a damper made of a shape memory material. The damper is controlled to switch between a first operative configuration for preventing the airflow from entering the enclosed space and a second operative configured for permitting the airflow to enter the enclosed space.

Closed Loop Active Flow Separation Detection and Control in a Multistage Compressor

Active closed loop flow control was successfully demonstrated on a full annulus of stator vanes in a low speed axial compressor. Two independent methods of detecting separated flow conditions on the vane suction surface were developed. The first technique detects changes in static pressure along the vane suction surface, while the second method monitors variation in the potential field of the downstream rotor. Both methods may feasibly be used in future engines employing embedded flow control technology. In response to the detection of separated conditions, injection along the suction surface of each vane was used. Injected mass flow on the suction surface of stator vanes is known to reduce separation and the resulting limitation on static pressure rise due to lowered diffusion in the vane passage. A control algorithm was developed which provided a proportional response of the injected mass flow to the degree of separation, thereby minimizing the performance penalty on the compressor system.

A Typing Discipline for High-Assurance Control Systems

This poster describes a typing discipline for high-assurance industrial systems based on three novel type systems. The first type system, information flow control (IFC), controls the flow of data through the system. The second system, dependent session types, restricts messages exchanged during the execution of a communication protocol to avoid dangerous states. The third system uses dimensional analysis to avoid subtle bugs that adversaries can exploit to cause the system to enter a dangerous state. This poster describes how a combination of these approaches can prevent sophisticated cyber attacks, such as the infamous Stuxnet incident, from occurring. In addition, we provide experimental evidence to support the claim that these approaches can be applied in control systems that are resource-constrained.

Analysis and control of unsteady separated flows

The active control of unsteady separated flows is considered, and the development of the separated flow following the formation and shedding of the starting vortex is characterized. In the method, the Navier-Stokes equations are formulated in time-dependent general orthogonal coordinates which remain boundary aligned for arbitrary boundary deformations. Results obtained for a backstep-channel flow with an oscillating flap demonstrate the effectiveness of the flap as a control mechanism.
