Cation Short-Range Ordering of MgAl 2 O 4 and NiAl 2 O 4 Spinel Oxides at High Temperatures via In Situ Neutron Total Scattering

Complex oxides that adopt the isometric spinel structure (AB 2 O 4 ) are important for numerous technological applications and are relevant for certain geological processes, which involve exposure to extreme environments such as high pressures and temperatures. Recent studies have shown that the changes to the spinel structure caused by these environments are complex and depend on the material length scale under consideration. In this study we have expanded this approach to the behavior of spinels under high temperature. In situ neutron total scattering experiments, coupled with pair distribution function analysis, performed on two spinel compositions with various levels of pre-existing disorder (MgAl 2 O 4 and NiAl 2 O 4 ) revealed that both compositions trend to a state of maximum disorder where the A and B cations are randomly distributed amongst the two available sites. Temperature-induced cation inversion, conventionally understood as exchange of cations on the A and B sites, is locally expressed as an atomic rearrangement to a tetragonal symmetry, a correlation that is retained up to the maximum temperature studied (1000 °C). Furthermore, a complex thermal expansion behavior is revealed wherein the oxide materials expand heterogeneously at the level of coordination polyhedral with an apparent dependence on bond strength.

Electronic and Thermal Properties of the Cation Substitution-Derived Quaternary Chalcogenide CuInSnSe 4

Quaternary chalcogenides continue to be of interest for a variety of technological applications, with physical properties stemming from their structural complexity and stoichiometric variation. In certain structure types, partial vacancies on specific lattice positions present an opportunity to investigate electrical and thermal properties in light of these lattice defects. In this work, we investigated the structural, thermal, and electronic properties of CuInSnSe 4 , a material that belongs to a relatively unexplored class of quaternary chalcogenides with a defect adamantine crystal structure. First-principles calculations together with experimental measurements revealed a chalcopyrite-like structure with inherent vacancies and characteristic s–p and p–d orbital hybridizations in the electronic structure of the material. Cation disorder and lattice anharmonicity result in very low thermal conductivity with values significantly lower than those for related compositions. In conclusion, this work reveals the fundamental physical properties of a previously uninvestigated quaternary chalcogenide and may aid investigations of similar as well as other quaternary chalcogenide compositions.

Diamond and methane formation from the chemical decomposition of polyethylene at high pressures and temperatures

Abstract Polyethylene (C 2 H 4 ) n was compressed to pressures between 10 and 30 GPa in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and laser heated above 2500 K for approximately one second. This resulted in the chemical decomposition of the polymer into carbon and hydrocarbon reaction products. After quenching to ambient temperature, the decomposition products were measured in the DAC at pressures ranging from ambient to 29 GPa using a combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). XRD identified cubic diamond and methane as the predominant product species with their pressure–volume relationships exhibiting strong correlations to the diamond and methane equations of state. Length scales associated with the diamond products, obtained from SAXS measurements, indicate the formation of nanodiamonds with a radius of gyration between 12 and 35 nm consistent with 32–90 nm diameter spherical particles. These results are in good agreement with the predicted product composition under thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium.

Balanced stochastic versus deterministic assembly processes benefit diverse yet uneven ecosystem functions in representative agroecosystems

Ecological assembly processes, by influencing community composition, determine ecosystem functions of microbiomes. However, debate remains on how stochastic versus deterministic assembly processes influence ecosystem functions such as carbon and nutrient cycling. Towards a better understanding, we investigated three types of agroecosystems (the upland, paddy, and flooded) that represent a gradient of stochastic versus deterministic assembly processes. Carbon and nutrient cycling multifunctionality, characterized by nine enzymes associated with soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur cycling, was evaluated and then associated with microbial assembly processes and cooccurrence patterns of vital ecological groups. Our results suggest that strong deterministic processes favour microorganisms with convergent functions (as in the upland agroecosystem), while stochasticity-dominated processes lead to divergent functions (as in the flooded agroecosystem). To benefit agroecosystems services, we speculate that it is critical for a system to maintain balance between its stochastic and deterministic assembly processes (as in the paddy agroecosystem). By doing so, the system can preserve a diverse array of functional traits and also allow for particular traits to flourish. To further confirm this speculation, it is necessary to develop a systematic knowledge beyond merely characterizing general patterns towards the associations among community assembly, composition, and ecosystem functions.

Novel High Temperature Carbide and Boride Ceramics for Direct Power Extraction Electrode Applications. Final report

The current project aims to develop new carbide and boride ceramic materials that incorporate different metal elements (e.g., (Hf 1-x Zr x )B 2 , also called ceramic solid solutions) and understand the fundamental composition-processing-structure-property relationships for such materials. Specifically, nano powders and related nano-composites for selected mixed metal carbide and boride materials are synthesized from nano-scale mixed precursors obtained from solution-based processing via heat treatment in inert atmosphere. The obtained fine powders were then consolidated into dense ceramics via a novel flash sintering process. The mechanical properties and thermal oxidation resistance for the obtained materials were evaluated for these materials. It was found that different synthesis routes produced powders with somewhat different characteristics in terms of composition and microstructure, which then led to different properties for the final ceramics. The synthesis and processing methods demonstrated in this study might be adopted for developing other similar high temperature ceramics, while the mixed metal or solid solution ceramic materials obtained from this study might be used as hot electrodes for direction power extraction and other energy-related applications.

PMR polyimides with improved high temperature performance

Studies were performed to investigate the effect of substituting a hexafluoro isopropyl idene connecting group for a carbonyl group of a PMR polyimide monomeric reactant on the thermo-mechanical properties processability of graphite fiber reinforced PMR polyimide composites. Composites were fabricated utilizing PMR methodology. Monomeric reactant solutions of various stoichiometric ratios were used to impregnate Hercules HTS graphite fiber. The processing characteristics and elevated temperature (600 F) mechanical properties of the composites are described.
