Backward elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470 and 590 MeV

Preliminary results are reported from a part of the data obtained at the NASA Space Radiation Effect Laboratory for the elastic scattering of protons by deuterons in the backward hemisphere. The data is averaged over a proton angle interval which corresponds to the angular resolution on the correlation angle, given the proton bin used in the data analysis.

Mariner 9 - Image processing and products.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the system for the display, processing, and production of image data products created to support the Mariner 9 Television Experiment. Of necessity, the system was large in order to respond to the needs of a large team of scientists with a broad scope of experimental objectives. The desire to generate processed data products as rapidly as possible to take advantage of adaptive planning during the mission, coupled with the complexities introduced by the nature of the vidicon camera, greatly increased the scale of the ground image processing effort. This paper describes the systems that carried out the processes and delivered the products necessary for real-time and near-real-time analyses. References are made to the computer algorithms used for the different levels of decalibration and analysis.

Stability of distributed systems with feedback via Michailov's criterion.

Development of a stability criterion of the Nyquist type from Michailov's criterion for a large class of distributed parameter systems, in particular, for a large class of transmission line systems with feedback. Following a generalization of Michailov's criterion, simplifying assumptions, usually valid in practice, are shown to yield a simplified test for determining whether 'encirclement-counting' constitutes a valid stability test. The results are reformulated for an open-loop analysis. Three examples show various aspects of the theoretical analysis.

Analysis of nonlinear vibrations of cylinders

In study of geometric nonlinear vibrations, infinite, long, thin-walled cylinder was analyzed under periodic, dynamic loading to demonstrate that some nonlinear phenomena cannot be obtained by straight-forward numerical solution methods. Results demonstrate that nonlinear phenomenon in large amplitude vibration traveling-wave condition can be predicted by analysis.

Determination of Fares: Pricing Theory and Economic Efficiency

The concept of economic efficiency is described, its application to the pricing of air transport services, and its relevance as a policy objective are outlined. The first two sections discuss economic efficiency in general terms, whereas the third applies this norm to several airline pricing problems. The final section emphasizes the importance of industry behavior as a parameter in policy analysis.

ERTS-1 Virgin Islands experiment 589: Determine boundaries of ERTS and aircraft data within which useful water quality information can be obtained

The author has identified the following significant results. The boundaries of application of ERTS-1 and aircraft data are established for St. Thomas harbor within which useful water quality information can be obtained. In situ physical, chemical, and biological water quality and benthic data were collected. Moored current meters were employed. Optical measurements of solar irradiance, color test panel radiance and water absorption were taken. Procedures for correlating in situ optical, biological, and chemical data with underflight aircraft I2S data and ERTS-1 MSS scanner data are presented. Comparison of bulk and precision CCT computer printout data for this application is made, and a simple method for geometrically locating bulk data individual pixels based on land-water interface is described. ERTS spacecraft data and I2S aircraft imagery are correlated with optical in situ measurements of the harbor water, with the aircraft green photographic and ERTS-1 MSS-4 bands being the most useful. The biological pigments correlate inversely with the optical data for inshore areas and directly further seaward. Automated computer data processing facilitated analysis.

Inflight thermodynamic properties

The inflight thermodynamic parameters (temperature, pressure, and density) of the atmosphere are presented. Mean and extreme values of the thermodynamic parameters given here can be used in application of many aerospace problems, such as: (1) research and planning and engineering design of remote earth sensing systems; (2) vehicle design and development; and (3) vehicle trajectory analysis, dealing with vehicle thrust, dynamic pressure, aerodynamic drag, aerodynamic heating, vibration, structural and guidance limitations, and reentry analysis. Atmospheric density plays a very important role in most of the above problems. A subsection on reentry is presented, giving atmospheric models to be used for reentry heating, trajectory, etc., analysis.

Enhancement of oxidative vaporization of chromium (III) oxide and chromium by oxygen atoms

Rates of oxidative vaporization of Cr2O3 were found to be markedly enhanced in the presence of O atoms. Investigations were conducted over the temperature range 470 to 1520 K. For Cr2O3 the enhancement was about 10 to the 9th power at 820 K in oxygen containing 2.5 percent atoms. Rapid oxidative vaporization of bare chromium was observed below 1070 K, the rate being about one-half that of Cr2O3. Results are interpreted in terms of thermochemical analysis.

Analysis and interpretation of arterial sounds using a small clinical computer system

A small mobile bed-side computer system is described that is capable of performing phonoangiographic analyses as well as many other common data analysis tasks in a hospital. The clinical application of phonoangiography is found to be greatly facilitated by the computer-provided availability of data acquisition and analysis capabilities.
