Long-Term Thermal Aging Effect Evaluation for Grade 92 and 316L at The LWR Relevant Temperature

Life extension of the existing nuclear reactors imposes accumulated damages, such as higher fluences and longer periods of corrosion, to structural materials, which would result in significant challenges to the traditional reactor materials such as type 304 and 316 stainless steels. Advanced alloys with superior radiation resistance will increase safety margins, design flexibility, and economics for not only the life extension of the existing fleet but also new builds with advanced reactor designs. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) initiated a collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE) Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program on the Advanced Radiation Resistant Materials (ARRM) program, focused on developing and test degradation resistant alloys for light water reactor (LWR)- relevant environments. Based on a comprehensive microstructure and property screening, the ARRM program selected a total of five alloys (i.e., Grade 92, 310, 690, 718A, and 725), together with 316L and X-750 as references, for further investigations.

Non-Equilibrium relaxation, aging scaling, and critical depinning dynamics of skyrmions in disordered magnetic films. Final Report

Technical applications of type-II superconductors, especially high-Tc compounds, in external magnetic fields require an effective flux pinning mechanism to reduce Ohmic losses due to flux creep and flow. Naturally abundant point defects, dislocations, and twin boundaries as well as artificially introduced disorder may serve as effective pinning centers for magnetic vortices. The properties of interacting flux lines subject to strong thermal fluctuations and point-like or extended pinning centers have therefore been a major research focus in condensed matter physics, and considerable progress has been achieved in the characterization and mathematical description of the equilibrium phases and non-equilibrium steady states of vortex matter. Detailed studies of the rich phase diagrams that reveal novel glassy states as well as the associated complex dynamical phenomena have in turn enriched the theoretical understanding of condensed matter systems, elucidating specifically the kinetics of elastic objects driven through disordered media and the important role of topological defects such as vortices and dislocations in various materials.

Opportunities to Update the Model of Tank Closure Grout Aging (SRNL-STI-2012-00404) Based on Experimental Results by the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory

The purpose of this report was to review the results of experiments on evolution of tank grout pore fluids performed by the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) and reported in Seaman et al. (2020) and highlight opportunities for updating the model of tank grout degradation presented in Denham and Millings (2012). The SREL experimental results validate some assumptions used in the 2012 grout degradation model and provide information useful for updating the model. All experiments on tank grout degradation have limitations because of reaction rates and the enormous disparity between duration of the experiments and the duration of the degradation of the real tank grout system. Given these limitations, the experimental results form the basis for several recommendations for updating the grout degradation model described in this report.

LLNL FY22 Aging and Lifetimes Exit Criteria (Milestone 8118, GC#5)

This report introduces a novel characterization tool that can rapidly collect in-situ time-dependent oxide thickness and hydride growth data together with spatial data using while-light interferometry. White-light interferometry is a non-destructive and non-contact optical surface profiling technique for materials characterization that offers excellent lateral and vertical resolution. A depleted uranium sample was used to assess the ability of white-light interferometry to provide quantitative corrosion reaction rates at metal surfaces for by hydriding and oxidation and compare this technique to existing characterization tools for capturing early-stage hydride and oxide growth kinetics.

Aging and Lifetimes Program Annual Report - Part I: Update to BDNPA-BDNPF phase diagram (FY2022)

The eutectic mixture nitroplasticizer (NP) contains water, without exception, on the order of hundreds to thousands of parts per million depending on the exposure conditions. Therefore, to evaluate the properties of NP, one must consider that NP is not simply comprised of two constituents. Here we supplement previous work on the physical properties of NP (Edgar et al., 2020) by expanding on the experimental work therein and addressing inaccuracies detailed in a subsequent comment article (Brown, 2021). Specifically, the purpose of this work is to clarify and modify the phase diagram of the bis(2,2-dinitropropyl) acetal with bis(2,2-dinitropropyl) formal eutectic mixture by considering the effect of water concentrations on the nucleation process.
