The influence of inhomogeneity of the reflectivity distribution on the accuracy of its measurement

The influence of pulse volume dimensions on the accuracy of reflectivity from various clouds is considered. It is shown that due to the spatial averaging and the inhomogeneities of the clouds, the dependence frequently breaks down, which is a cause of lower values of the spatial distribution estimate. Values of the corrections calculated for various conditions are presented.

Application of very long baseline interferometry to Astrometry and Geodesy: effects of frequency standard instability on accuracy

The accuracy of geodetic and astrometric information obtained from very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations is dependent upon the stability of the frequency standard, or clock, used at each site of VLBI array. The sensitivities of two hydrogen maser frequency standards of different design to pressure, temperature, and magnetic field variations were measured; and, for one of the standards, sensitivity was found to be severe enough to degrade the information content of VLBI measurements. However, the effect on the geometric and astrometric information of such clock instabilities, with time scales of hours or greater, can be sharply reduced through the use of differencing techniques.

SL-4 S-190 spectroradiometric accuracy

A procedure used for determining radiometric accuracy, consisting of two phases is presented. In the first phase a sensitometer was used as a calibrated radiometric target; while in the second, the moon was employed. Since the moon is a nonhomogeneous target whose radiometric signature is not as well-known as the irradiants of the sensitometer, the majority of this effort was directed towards the reduction and analysis of the sensitometric data.

Position accuracy of aircraft area navigation systems and the effect of system parameters

The steady-state solution to the stochastic differential equation describing the error covariance matrix for a simplified area navigation system has been obtained. The solution shows that nominal error deviations of less than 1.0 nmi are feasible for a DME system. The manner in which estimates are affected by range, air data system accuracy, measurement time interval, and gust deviations, and their impacts on the area navigation system are discussed.

Diagnostic accuracy of an ultrasonic multiple transducer cardiac imaging system

An ultrasonic multiple-transducer imaging system for intracardiac structure visualization is developed in order to simplify visualization of the human heart in vivo without radiation hazard or invasion of the body. Results of the evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of the devised system in a clinical setting for adult patients are presented and discussed. Criteria are presented for recognition of mitral valva prolapse, mitral stenosis, pericardial effusion, atrial septal defect, and left ventricular dyssynergy. The probable cause for false-positive and false-negative diagnoses is discussed. However, hypertrophic myopathy and congestive myopathy were unable to be detected. Since only qualitative criteria were used, it was not possible to differentiate patients with left ventricular volume overload from patients without cardiac pathology.

The Annular Suspension and Pointing (ASP) system for space experiments and predicted pointing accuracies

An annular suspension and pointing system consisting of pointing assemblies for coarse and vernier pointing is described. The first assembly is attached to a carrier spacecraft (e.g., the space shuttle) and consists of an azimuth gimbal and an elevation gimbal which provide 'coarse' pointing. The second or vernier pointing assembly is made up of magnetic actuators of suspension and fine pointing, roll motor segments, and an instrument or experiment mounting plate around which is attached a continuous annular rim similar to that used in the annular momentum control device. The rim provides appropriate magnetic circuits for the actuators and the roll motor segments for any instrument roll position. The results of a study to determine the pointing accuracy of the system in the presence of crew motion disturbances are presented. Typical 3 sigma worst-case errors are found to be of the order of 0.001 arc-second.

The effects of atmospheric refraction on the accuracy of laser ranging systems

Correction formulas derived by Saastamoinen and Marini, and the ray traces through the refractivity profiles all assume a spherically symmetric refractivity profile. The errors introduced by this assumption were investigated by ray tracing through three-dimensional profiles. The results of this investigation indicate that the difference between ray traces through the spherically symmetric and three-dimensional profiles is approximately three centimeters at 10 deg and decreases to less than one half of a centimeter at 80 deg. If the accuracy desired in future laser ranging systems is less than a few centimeters, Saastamoinen and Marini's formulas must be altered to account for the fact that the refractivity profile is not spherically symmetric.

On the accuracy of the 'decoupled l-dominant' approximation for atom-molecule scattering

Cross sections for rotational excitation and spectral pressure broadening of HD, HCl, CO, and HCN due to collisions with low energy He atoms have been computed within the 'decoupled l-dominant' (DLD) approximation and are compared with accurate close coupling results and also with two similar approximations, the effective potential of Rabitz and the coupled states of McGuire and Kouri. DLD predictions of state-to-state cross sections are rather good, being only slightly less accurate than coupled states results. DLD is far superior to either the coupled states or effective potential methods for pressure broadening calculations, although it may not be uniformly of the quantitative accuracy desirable for obtaining intermolecular potentials from experimental data.

Parametric study of predictor accuracy impact on OFT rendezvous targeting

A parametric study was made to quantitatively define the effects of errors in the state vector predictor used by the Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) rendezvous targeting algorithms. The effect of the predictor accuracy on the OFT rendezvous profile is shown by the sensitivity of various critical rendezvous parameters with respect to downrange and radial predictor error rates. The effect of both inertial (same errors on both vehicles) and relative (differential errors on one vehicle with respect to the other) errors were considered. Relative radial error rates had the largest impact on the rendezvous followed by relative downrange errors, radial inertial errors and downrange inertial errors.

Results of a remote multiplexer/digitizer unit accuracy and environmental study

A remote multiplexer/digitizer unit (RMDU), a part of the airborne integrated flight test data system, was subjected to an accuracy study. The study was designed to show the effects of temperature, altitude, and vibration on the RMDU. The RMDU was subjected to tests at temperatures from -54 C (-65 F) to 71 C (160 F), and the resulting data are presented here, along with a complete analysis of the effects. The methods and means used for obtaining correctable data and correcting the data are also discussed.

A procedure for merging land cover/use data from LANDSAT, aerial photography, and map sources: Compatibility, accuracy, and cost. Remote Sensing Project

Regional planning agencies are currently expressing a need for detailed land cover/use information to effectively meet the requirements of various federal programs. Individual data sources have advantages and limitations in fulfilling this need, both in terms of time/cost and technological capability. A methodology has been developed to merge land cover/use data from LANDSAT, aerial photography and map sources to maximize the effective use of a variety of data sources in the provision of an integrated information system for regional analysis. A test of the proposed inventory method is currently under way in four central Michigan townships. This test will evaluate the compatibility, accuracy and cost of the integrated method with reference to inventories developed from a single data source, and determine both the technological feasibility and analytical potential of such a system.

A procedure for merging land cover/use data from Landsat, aerial photography, and map sources - Compatibility, accuracy and cost

A method is developed to merge land cover/use data from Landsat, aerial photography and map sources into a grid-based geographic information system. The method basically involves computer-assisted categorization of Landsat data to provide certain user-specified land cover categories; manual interpretation of aerial photography to identify other selected land cover/use categories that cannot be obtained from Landsat data; identification of special features from aerial photography or map sources; merging of the interpreted data from all the sources into a computer compatible file under a standardized coding structure; and the production of land cover/use maps, thematic maps, and tabular data. The specific tasks accomplished in producing the merged land cover/use data file and subsequent output products are identified and discussed. It is shown that effective implementation of the merging method is critically dependent on selecting the 'best' data source for each user-specified category in terms of accuracy and time/cost tradeoffs.

Maximum theoretical angular accuracy of planar and linear arrays of sensors

The maximum theoretical accuracy in the angular location of a radiating object that can be obtained by using a planar or linear array is studied. The elements are assumed to have identical radiation patterns and the complex voltages observed at their ports are assumed to be subject to phase measurement errors, having normal probability density. An optimum scheme for the statistical extraction of the parameters defining the direction is established noting that the presence of thermal noise does not affect the structure of the estimator. Comparisons with the conventional multiple interferometric techniques are made.
