Science &Technology Review (October/November 2022)

Livermore researchers seek to understand the disease mechanism of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and, with that knowledge, identify therapies to cure this always-fatal disease. As the article beginning on p. 4 describes, the ALS research effort combines Laboratory core competencies in bioscience, engineering, computational modeling, and data science.

Science &Technology Review (September 2022)

Computer modeling is essential to scientific research. Models simulate natural phenomena to aid scientists in understanding their underlying principles. While the most complex models running on supercomputers may contain millions of lines of code and generate billions of data points, models never simulate reality perfectly. Experiments—in contrast—have been fundamental to the study of natural phenomena from science’s earliest days. However, some of today’s complex experiments generate too much data for the human mind to interpret.

2022 Site Environmental Report: Idaho National Laboratory

The INL Site’s operations, as well as the ongoing cleanup mission involve a commitment to environmental stewardship and full compliance with environmental protection laws. As part of this commitment, the INL Site Environmental Report is prepared annually to inform the public, regulators, stakeholders, and other interested parties of the INL Site’s environmental performance during the year. This report is published for U.S. Department of Energy, Idaho Operations Office (DOE-ID) in compliance with DOE O 231.1B, “Environment, Safety and Health Reporting.” The purpose of the report is to provide the following: (1) Present the INL Site, mission, and programs, (2) Report compliance status with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, (3) Describe the INL Site environmental programs and activities, (4) Summarize results of environmental monitoring, (5) Discuss potential radiation doses to the public residing in the vicinity of the INL Site, (6) Report on ecological monitoring and research conducted by contractors and affiliated agencies and by independent researchers through the Idaho National Environmental Research Park, (7) Describe quality assurance methods used to ensure confidence in monitoring data, and (8) Provide supplemental technical data and reports that support the INL Site Environmental Report (https://idahoeser.inl.gov/publications.html).

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (2022 Annual Site Environment Report (ASER))

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is a premier research laboratory that is part of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). As a national security laboratory, LLNL is responsible for ensuring that the nation’s nuclear weapons remain safe, secure, and reliable. The Laboratory also meets other pressing national security needs including countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, strengthening homeland security, and conducting major research in atmospheric, earth, and energy sciences, bioscience and biotechnology, and engineering, basic science, and advanced technology. The Laboratory is managed and operated by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) and serves as a scientific resource to the U.S. government and a partner to industry and academia.

Clean Cities Coalitions: 2022 Activity Report

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) works with local Clean Cities coalitions across the country as part of its Technology Integration Program. These efforts help businesses and consumers make smarter and more informed transportation energy choices that can save energy, lower costs, provide resilience through fuel diversification, and reduce emissions. This report summarizes the success and impact of coalition activities based on data and information provided in their annual reports.

Economic, Greenhouse Gas, and Resource Assessment for Fuel and Protein Production from Microalgae: 2022 Algae Harmonization Update

This report presents an updated "harmonization study" documenting the collaborative analysis of microalgae cultivation and conversion to fuels and products. Four national laboratory modeling teams reconvened to investigate the resource, economic, and environmental sustainability implications of integrated systems encompassing large-scale algae farms and conversion biorefineries. Relative to prior harmonization analyses conducted by these partners, the present effort focuses on more near-term deployment potential based on the use of nutrient-replete, high-protein algal biomass compositions (more readily achievable today without sacrificing cultivation productivity), though this also incurs challenges in lower fuel yields and accordingly higher costs and carbon intensities for the overall integrated systems. Additionally, the present assessment adds further granularity around carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sourcing and transport via carbon capture of nearby point sources, as well as handling of high-saline cultivation media and resultant blowdown/disposal processing. Finally, this assessment focuses on conversion opportunities to produce both fuel (prioritizing sustainable aviation fuel, in this case via hydrothermal liquefaction) and protein products for the food and feed markets, recognizing growing needs for such products.

Hawai'i Pathways to Decarbonization: Act 238, Session Laws of Hawai'i 2022

Act 238 mandated the Hawaii State Energy Office (HSEO) generate a report analyzing the pathways to achieve state and economy-wide 50% emissions reductions from 2005 levels by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2045. NREL supported HSEO in analyzing the electric sector impacts of these decarbonization pathways by performing a capacity expansion modeling analysis for the Oahu, Hawai'i island, Kaua'i, Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i island electric grids. NREL used the Engage capacity expansion modeling tool and PRAS resource adequacy tool to perform these analysis.

Bottom-Up Soft Magnetic Composites (FY 2022 Annual Progress Report)

The project objective is to develop high-magnetization, low-loss iron nitride based soft magnetic composites for electrical machines. These new SMCs will enable low eddy current losses and therefore highly efficient motor operation at rotational speeds up to 20,000 rpm. Additionally, iron nitride and epoxy composites will be capable of operating at temperatures of 150 °C or greater over a lifetime of 300,000 miles or 15 years.

Arroyo Seco Improvement Project: Annual Report 2022

The Arroyo Seco Improvement Program (ASIP) is intended to provide active channel improvements and stream zone management activities that will reduce current flood and erosion risk while providing additional and improved habitat for critical species that may use the Arroyo Seco at the Sandia National Laboratories, California (SNL/CA). SNL/CA facility is operated by the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC (NTESS) under a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA). The DOE/ NNSA’s Sandia Field Office (SFO) oversees the operations of the site.
