US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project, Acceptance Criteria Part A: MQXFA Magnet

This document specifies the functional requirements for the MQXFA magnet readapted for the American contribution. If all the requirements specified in this document are met, then the U.S. HL-LHC AUP MQXFA deliverables will be accepted by CERN for the HL-LHC project. Another separate document will be issued by the American contribution for the MQXFA cold mass functional requirements. Please note that the definition of threshold as it is being used by the American contribution is not the same as objective, according to the HL-LHC quality policy.

US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project: MQXFA11 shipping incident report

The truck transporting the MQXFA11 magnet from LBNL to BNL was involved in an accident on 7/20/22. It was rear ended by another truck. Drivers were not injured. The main hit took place on the right back corner. The truck with the MQXFA11 magnet was towed to a tow yard in Rockdale, IL (~50 min drive from Fermilab). Subsequently, it was moved on another truck and moved to Fermilab. Fermilab employees added 3 accelerometers on the crate before it was moved on the new truck and attended all loading/unloading operations at the tow yard and at FNAL. The magnet arrived at FNAL on July 28 th . Upon arrival a visual inspection was performed. Accelerometers were removed and shock data were analyzed. Electrical checkout and a metrology survey were carried out. Strain data were also collected from the fiber optics installed on two coils and compared with data obtained before shipment. This report presents a summary of results. More pictures and details can be found at: https://indico.fnal.gov/event/55698/

DFO Computational Modeling Project - Catalytic Upgrading of Bio-based Furfural to 1,5-Pentanediol: A New Renewable Monomer for the Coatings Industry (Final Report)

This report summarizes the results of a collaborative effort between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Pyran™ Inc. to utilize modeling capabilities developed by the CCPC (Consortium for Computational Physics and Chemistry) to assist Pyran in scaling up its proprietary process for thermocatalytic conversion of furfural to 1,5 pentanediol (PDO). Pyran’s bio-based PDO is a direct replacement for petroleum-based PDO and 1,6 hexanediol (HDO) currently used in polymers, additives, coatings, adhesives and sealants. The current market is in excess of $\$$1B/yr. According to Pyran, their production process results in 95+% reduction in fossil CO 2 at lower production costs compared to the existing petroleum-based routes for PDO & HDO. Other chemicals based on intermediates from this process have current markets in excess of $\$$10B/yr.

CEBAF FFA Energy Upgrade

Encouraged by recent success of CBETA, a proposal was formulated to increase the CEBAF energy from the present 12 GeV to 20-24 GeV by replacing the highest-energy arcs with Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFA) arcs. The new pair of arcs would provide six or seven new beam passes, going through this magnet array, allowing the energy to be nearly doubled using the existing CEBAF SRF cavity system. One of the immediate accelerator design tasks is to develop a proof-of-principle FFA arc magnet lattice that would support simultaneous transport of 6-7 passes, with energies spanning a factor of two. We also examine a possibility of using combined function magnets to configure a cascade, six-way beam split switchyard. Finally, a novel, multi-pass linac optics based on a triplet focusing lattice is being explored.
