Ultrafast optical switching and power limiting in intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces

Highly nonlinear optical materials with fast third-order nonlinear optical response are crucial for the operation of all-optical photonic devices, such as switches for signal processing and computation, power limiters, and saturable absorbers. The nonlinear response of traditional optical materials is weak, thus requiring large light intensities to induce significant changes in their properties. Here we show that optical control of the coupling rate in subwavelength patch antennas coupled to intersubband transitions in multi-quantum-well semiconductor heterostructures can provide a giant third-order nonlinear response, on the order of 3.4 × <#comment/> 10 − <#comment/> 13 m 2 / V 2 , with a response time < <#comment/> 2 p s . We utilize this effect to realize intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces and demonstrate their operation as highly nonlinear saturable and reverse saturable absorbers, enabling optical power limiters and other elements for all-optical modulation and control. Our approach enables a plethora of compact, low-power, highly nonlinear devices with spectral, temporal, and structured wavefront responses tailored by design.

ULTRAFAST HIGH-VOLTAGE KICKER SYSTEM HARDWARE FOR ION CLEARING GAPS

Ionization scattering of electron beams with residual gas molecules causes ion trapping in electron rings, both in a collider and electron cooling system. These trapped ions may cause emittance growth, tune shift, halo formation, and coherent coupled bunch instabilities. To clear the ions and prevent them from accumulating turn after turn, the gaps in a temporal structure of the beam are used. Typi- cally, the gap in the bunch train has a length of a few per- cent of the ring circumference. In those regions, the extrac- tion electrodes with high pulsed voltages are introduced. In this paper, we present the design consideration and initial test results of the high-voltage pulsed kicker hardware that includes vacuum device and pulsed voltage driver, capable of achieving over 3 kV of deflecting voltage amplitude, rise and fall times of less than 10 ns, 100 ns flat-top duration at 1.4 MHz repetition rate.

The transient properties of 2D magnets: from mechanical exfoliation to ultrafast optical spectroscopy of CrX 3 materials

The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) systems hosting intrinsic long-range magnetic order represents a seminal achievement, adding to the already diverse array of physics supported by layered van der Waals (vdW) materials. This finding has spurred great interest among the research community, with efforts aimed at uncovering their fundamental properties and light- matter interactions. A prototypical example of a 2D magnetic material is Crl 3 , where the strong relationship between crystalline structure and magnetic order, along with strong light- matter interactions, provide a promising platform to explore the nature of couplings between magnetism and the other degrees of freedom at the 2D limit. In this report, we highlight our efforts involving the use of time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) spectroscopy to probe the magnetization and vibrational dynamics of Crl 3 . These measurements reveal evidence of strong exchange-mediated coupling between lattice vibrations and spin oscillations. Additionally, we discuss our related efforts to explore other material from the Chromium trihalide family through mechanical exfoliation to support subsequent optical spectroscopy investigations.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Ultrafast Vibrational Energy Transfer Dynamics in Energetic Materials

Energy transfer through anharmonically-coupled vibrations influences the earliest chemical steps in shockwave-induced detonation in energetic materials. A mechanistic description of vibrational energy transfer is therefore necessary to develop predictive models of energetic material behavior. We performed transient broadband infrared spectroscopy on hundreds of femtoseconds to hundreds of picosecond timescales as well as density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the evolution of vibrational energy distribution in thin film samples of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) , 1,3,5 - trinitroperhydro - 1,3,5 - triazine (RDX) , and 2,4,6 - triamino 1,3,5 - trinitrobenzene (TATB). Experimental results show dynamics on multiple timescales, providing strong evidence for coupled vibrations in these systems, as well as material-dependent evolution on tens to hundreds of picosecond timescales. Theoretical results also reveal pathways and distinct timescales for energy transfer through coupled vibrations in the three investigated materials, providing further insight into the mechanistic underpinnings of energy transfer dynamics in energetic material sensitivity.

Ultrafast probing of charge transfer dynamics with an XUV free-electron laser

We study charge transfer in dissociating molecules of 2-iodopropane (C 3 H 7 I) in a UV pump – XUV probe regime at the SACLA free-electron laser. Signatures of charge transfer from the recently dissociated iodine atom to the neutral propyl radical are observed in recorded 3D ion momentum distributions. This signature has evaded observation in previous related experiments. Detailed analysis of these signatures allows the identification of a region of internuclear separation where charge transfer occurs.
