Metal vapor vacuum arc switching - Applications and results

The design of metal-vapor vacuum-arc switches (MVSs) for electromagnetic launchers is discussed, and preliminary results are presented for an experimental MVS. The general principles of triggered-vacuum-gap and vacuum-interrupter MVSs are reviewed, and the requirements of electromagnetic launchers are analyzed. High-current design problems such as electrode erosion, current sharing, magnetic effects, and thermal effects are examined. The experimental MVS employs stainless-steel flanges, a glass vacuum vessel, an adjustable electrode gap, autonomous internal magnetic-field coils, and a tungsten-pin trigger assembly. Some results from tests without magnetic augmentation are presented graphically.

High-temperature optically activated GaAs power switching for aircraft digital electronic control

Gallium arsenide high-temperature devices were fabricated and assembled into an optically activated pulse-width-modulated power control for a torque motor typical of the kinds used in jet engine actuators. A bipolar heterojunction phototransistor with gallium aluminum arsenide emitter/window, a gallium arsenide junction field-effect power transistor and a gallium arsenide transient protection diode were designed and fabricated. A high-temperature fiber optic/phototransistor coupling scheme was implemented. The devices assembled into the demonstrator were successfully tested at 250 C, proving the feasibility of actuator-located switching of control power using optical signals transmitted by fibers. Assessments of the efficiency and technical merits were made for extension of this high-temperature technology to local conversion of optical power to electrical power and its control at levels useful for driving actuators. Optical power sources included in the comparisons were an infrared light-emitting diode, an injection laser diode, tungsten-halogen lamps and arc lamps. Optical-to-electrical power conversion was limited to photovoltaics located at the actuator. Impedance matching of the photovoltaic array to the load was considered over the full temperature range, -55 C to 260 C. Loss of photovoltaic efficiency at higher temperatures was taken into account. Serious losses in efficiency are: (1) in the optical source and the cooling which they may require in the assumed 125 C ambient, (2) in the decreased conversion efficiency of the gallium arsenide photovoltaic at 260 C, and (3) in impedance matching. Practical systems require improvements in these areas.

Improved heat switch for gas sorption compressor

Thermal conductivities of the charcoal bed and the copper matrix for the gas adsorption compressor were measured by the concentric-cylinder method. The presence of the copper matrix in the charcoal bed enhanced the bed conductance by at least an order of magnitude. Thermal capacities of the adsorbent cell and the heat leaks to two compressor designs were measured by the transient method. The new gas adsorption compressor had a heat switch that could transfer eight times more heat than the previous one. The cycle time for the new prototype compressor is also improved by a factor of eight to within the minute range.

Active Q switching in a GaAs/AlGaAs multiquantum well laser with an intracavity monolithic loss modulator

Active Q switching in a GaAs/AlGaAs multiquantum well laser with an intracavity electroabsorption monolithic loss modulator is demonstrated. In this device, an efficient loss modulation is achieved through the quantum confined Stark effect in a modulator section and the enhanced carrier induced band shrinkage effect in an optical amplifier section. It is found that a picosecond pulse as narrow as 18.6 ps full width at half-maximum is generated and a high repetition rate of more than 3 GHz is obtained.

Switching Circuit for Shop Vacuum System

No internal connections to machine tools required. Switching circuit controls vacuum system draws debris from grinders and sanders in machine shop. Circuit automatically turns on vacuum system whenever at least one sander or grinder operating. Debris safely removed, even when operator neglects to turn on vacuum system manually. Pickup coils sense alternating magnetic fields just outside operating machines. Signal from any coil or combination of coils causes vacuum system to be turned on.

Switching Circuit Regulates Solenoid Current

New circuit requires no heat sink and is compact. Parts cost no more than those of linear regulator. Switching regulator repeatedly causes solenoid current to build up to maximum level, then to decay to minimum level: thus current ripples about commanded intermediate level. FET's dissipate significant amounts of power only during brief turn-on and turn-off intervals.

Measurements of antenna polar diagrams and efficiencies using a phase-switched interferometer

It is desirable to know antenna polar patterns and efficiencies accurately. In the past, calibration measurements have been made using balloons and aircraft and more recently satellites. These techniques are usually very expensive. It is shown that under certain circumstances it is possible to use a simpler and inexpensive technique by connecting together the antenna under test with another antenna to form a phase switched interferometer as first described by Ryle (1952). The technique does require a suitable radio source which gives measurable powers when using small antennas and since dipoles have broad patterns, radio sources with similar right ascensions but different declinations to the primary source can be a problem. These problems can partly be overcome by filtering the interference pattern.

Switches, lasers and electronically-hopped beam antennas in space - NASA's advanced communications technology satellite

The proposed design and operation of the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) are described. The ACTS is a three-axis stabilized spacecraft with an in-orbit weight of 2300 lbs and a beginning-of-life power of 1770 W; it is composed of a 20 GHz 2.2 m downlink antenna, a 30 GHz 3.3 m uplink antenna, a 1 m steerable antenna, and a laser package. The space segment communications payload uses high and low burst rate modes; the operations of these modes are discussed. The components of the laser intersatellite link instrument package are examined. Consideration is given to the ACTS's antennas, RF matrix switch system, and the base band processor. Diagrams of the ACTs systems are presented.

Modeling and stability analysis for the upper atmosphere research satellite auxiliary array switch component

A feedback control system, called an auxiliary array switch, was designed to connect or disconnect auxiliary solar panel segments from a spacecraft electrical bus to meet fluctuating demand for power. A simulation of the control system was used to carry out a number of design and analysis tasks that could not economically be performed with a breadboard of the hardware. These tasks included: (1) the diagnosis of a stability problem, (2) identification of parameters to which the performance of the control system was particularly sensitive, (3) verification that the response of the control system to anticipated fluctuations in the electrical load of the spacecraft was satisfactory, and (4) specification of limitations on the frequency and amplitude of the load fluctuations.

Recent developments on a 128 x 128 indium antimonide/FET switch hybrid imager for low-background applications

By combining high-quality mesa photovoltaic indium antimonide detector material with a silicon x-y FET switch multiplexer, a useful infrared area detector has been developed. This device is intended for low-background applications, where high sensitivity is required. Initial characterization of the detector at 80 K showed a KTC limited read noise of less than 1000 electrons, good dark current, responsivity uniformity, and a maximum readout rate of 10 MHz. The hybrid mating technology has sufficient precision to allow expansion to a 256 x 256 format. The dark current in the detector material is sufficiently low to allow full-frame integration, even with arrays as large as 256 x 256 elements.
