Reflectivity and spectrum of relativistic flying plasma mirrors

Flying plasma mirrors induced by intense lasers via laser wake field acceleration scheme have been proposed as a promising way to generate few-cycle EUV or x-ray lasers. In addition, if such a relativistic plasma mirror can accelerate, then it would serve as an analog black hole to investigate the information loss paradox associated with the black hole Hawking evaporation. Among these applications, the reflectivity, which is usually frequency-dependent, would affect the outgoing photon spectrum and, therefore, impact on the analysis of the physics under investigation. In this paper, these two issues are investigated analytically and numerically with one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Based on our simulation results, we propose a new model that provides a better estimate of the reflectivity than those studied previously. Moreover, we found that the peak frequency of the reflected spectrum of a Gaussian incident wave deviates from the expected value, 4γ 2 ω, due to the dependence of reflectivity on the frequency of the incident wave.

Strong collisionless coupling between an unmagnetized driver plasma and a magnetized background plasma

Fast-exploding plasmas traveling though magnetized, collisionless plasmas can occur in a variety of physical systems, such as supernova remnants, coronal mass ejections, and laser-driven laboratory experiments. To study these systems, it is important to understand the coupling process between the plasmas. Here, in this work, we develop a semi-analytical model of the parameters that characterize the strong collisionless coupling between an unmagnetized driver plasma and a uniformly and perpendicularly magnetized background plasma. In particular, we derive analytical expressions that describe the characteristic diamagnetic cavity and magnetic compression of these systems, such as their corresponding velocities, the compression ratio, and the maximum size of the cavity. The semi-analytical model is compared with collisionless 1D particle-in-cell simulations and experimental results with laser-driven plasmas. The model allows us to provide bounds for parameters that are otherwise difficult to diagnose in experiments with similar setups.

A parametric model for self-interacting dark matter halos

Abstract We propose a parametric model for studying self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) halos. The model uses an analytical density profile, calibrated using a controlled N-body SIDM simulation that covers the entire gravothermal evolution, including core-forming and -collapsing phases. By normalizing the calibrated density profile, we obtain a universal description for SIDM halos at any evolution phase. The model allows us to infer properties of SIDM halos based on their cold dark matter (CDM) counterparts. As a basic application, we only require two characteristic parameters of an isolated CDM halo atz = 0. We then extend the model to incorporate effects induced by halo mass changes, such as major mergers or tidal stripping, making it applicable to both isolated halos and subhalos. The parametric model is tested and validated using cosmological zoom-in SIDM simulations available in the literature.

Redshift evolution and covariances for joint lensing and clustering studies with DESI Y1

ABSTRACT Galaxy–galaxy lensing (GGL) and clustering measurements from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Year 1 (DESI Y1) data set promise to yield unprecedented combined-probe tests of cosmology and the galaxy–halo connection. In such analyses, it is essential to identify and characterize all relevant statistical and systematic errors. We forecast the covariances of DESI Y1 GGL + clustering measurements and the systematic bias due to redshift evolution in the lens samples. Focusing on the projected clustering and GGL correlations, we compute a Gaussian analytical covariance, using a suite of N-body and lognormal simulations to characterize the effect of the survey footprint. Using the DESI one percent survey data, we measure the evolution of galaxy bias parameters for the DESI luminous red galaxy (LRG) and bright galaxy survey (BGS) samples. We find mild evolution in the LRGs in $0.4 < z < 0.8$, subdominant to the expected statistical errors. For BGS, we find less evolution for brighter absolute magnitude cuts, at the cost of reduced sample size. We find that for a redshift bin width $\Delta z = 0.1$, evolution effects on DESI Y1 GGL is negligible across all scales, all fiducial selection cuts, all fiducial redshift bins. Galaxy clustering is more sensitive to evolution due to the bias squared scaling. Nevertheless the redshift evolution effect is insignificant for clustering above the 1-halo scale of $0.1h^{-1}$ Mpc. For studies that wish to reliably access smaller scales, additional treatment of redshift evolution is likely needed. This study serves as a reference for GGL and clustering studies using the DESI Y1 sample.

The hTERT core promoter forms three parallel G-quadruplexes

The structure of the 68 nt sequence with G-quadruplex forming potential within the hTERT promoter is disputed. One model features a structure with three stacked parallel G-quadruplex units, while another features an unusual duplex hairpin structure adjoined to two stacked parallel and antiparallel quadruplexes. We report here the results of an integrated structural biology study designed to distinguish between these possibilities. As part of our study, we designed a sequence with an optimized hairpin structure and show that its biophysical and biochemical properties are inconsistent with the structure formed by the hTERT wild-type sequence. By using circular dichroism, thermal denaturation, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, analytical ultracentrifugation, small-angle X-ray scattering, molecular dynamics simulations and a DNase I cleavage assay we found that the wild type hTERT core promoter folds into a stacked, three-parallel G-quadruplex structure. The hairpin structure is inconsistent with all of our experimental data obtained with the wild-type sequence. All-atom models for both structures were constructed using molecular dynamics simulations. These models accurately predicted the experimental hydrodynamic properties measured for each structure. We found with certainty that the wild-type hTERT promoter sequence does not form a hairpin structure in solution, but rather folds into a compact stacked three-G-quadruplex conformation.

Quantum Hamiltonian algorithms for maximum independent sets

ABSTRACT We compare two quantum Hamiltonian algorithms that address the maximum independent set problem: one based on the emergent non-Abelian gauge matrix in adiabatic evolution of an energetically isolated manifold of states; the other based on designed application of single-qubit operations. We demonstrate that they are mathematically equivalent in the sense that one is the other’s interaction picture. Despite their mathematical equivalence, our numerical simulations show significant differences between them in performance, which is explained analytically. Intriguingly, this equivalence unveils that the PXP model, recently prominent in quantum dynamics research, can be viewed as quantum diffusion over the median graph of all independent sets governed by the non-Abelian gauge matrix.

Average nonlinear dynamics of particles in gravitational pulses: Effective Hamiltonian, secular acceleration, and gravitational susceptibility

Particles interacting with a prescribed quasimonochromatic gravitational wave (GW) exhibit secular (average) nonlinear dynamics that can be described by Hamilton’s equations. We derive the Hamiltonian of this “ponderomotive” dynamics to the second order in the GW amplitude for a general background metric. For the special case of vacuum GWs, we show that our Hamiltonian is equivalent to that of a free particle in an effective metric, which we calculate explicitly. We also show that already a linear GW pulse displaces a particle from its unperturbed trajectory by a finite distance that is independent of the GW phase and proportional to the integral of the pulse intensity. This effect is independent from the nonlinear memory effects that has been known. We calculate the particle displacement analytically and show that our result is in agreement with numerical simulations. We also show how the Hamiltonian of the nonlinear averaged dynamics naturally leads to the concept of the linear gravitational susceptibility of a particle gas with an arbitrary phase-space distribution. We calculate this susceptibility explicitly to apply it, in a follow-up paper, toward studying self-consistent GWs in inhomogeneous media within the geometrical-optics approximation

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: A 2.7% measurement of baryon acoustic oscillation distance scale at redshift 0.835

We present angular diameter measurements obtained by measuring the position of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in an optimized sample of galaxies from the first three years of Dark Energy Survey data (DES Y3). The sample consists of 7 million galaxies distributed over a footprint of 4100 deg 2 with 0.6 < z photo < 1.1 and a typical redshift uncertainty of 0.03 ( 1 + z ) . The sample selection is the same as in the BAO measurement with the first year of DES data, but the analysis presented here uses three times the area, extends to higher redshift, and makes a number of improvements, including a fully analytical BAO template, the use of covariances from both theory and simulations, and an extensive preunblinding protocol. We used two different statistics; angular correlation function and power spectrum, and validate our pipeline with an ensemble of over 1500 realistic simulations. Both statistics yield compatible results. We combine the likelihoods derived from angular correlations and spherical harmonics to constrain the ratio of comoving angular diameter distance D M at the effective redshift of our sample to the sound horizon scale at the drag epoch. We obtain D M ( z eff = 0.835 ) / r d = 18.92 ± 0.51 , which is consistent with, but smaller than, the Planck prediction assuming flat Λ CDM , at the level of 2.3 σ . The analysis was performed blind and is robust to changes in a number of analysis choices. It represents the most precise BAO distance measurement from imaging data to date, and is competitive with the latest transverse ones from spectroscopic samples at z > 0.75 . When combined with DES 3 x 2 pt + SNIa , they lead to improvements in H 0 and Ω m constraints by ∼ 20 % .

Quantum-Inspired Power System Reliability Assessment

To enable an in-depth study of power system operation and planning, the assessment of standard reliability indices is inevitable. The Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) approach is a broadly used method in replacing the analytical methods in reliability indices assessment. The accuracy of MCS, however, highly depends on the sampling size, and hence, a complicated system with large number of components requires a large sampling size and daunting computational effort. To address this shortcoming, we, in this paper attempt to take advantage of potentials of the quantum computing (QC) for power system reliability assessment by realizing the following contributions: 1) an innovative quantum model designed for reliability assessment; 2) a quantum circuit that achieves the quadratic speed up compared to the classical MCS method; 3) an efficient quantum amplitude estimation (QAE) algorithm to accurately evaluate the reliability indices. The accuracy and efficacy of the quantum reliability method are extensively verified and demonstrated on both radial and mesh distribution systems.

High-energy transient gas pinholes via saturated absorption

This Letter presents a spatial filter based on saturated absorption in gas as an alternative to the solid pinhole in a lens–pinhole–lens filtering system. We develop an analytic model that describes this process and demonstrate spatial filtering with simulations and experiments. We show that an ultraviolet laser pulse focused through ozone will have its spatial profile cleaned if its peak fluence rises above the ozone saturation fluence. Specifically, we demonstrate that a 5 ns 266 nm beam with 4.2 mJ of the initial energy can be effectively cleaned by focusing through a 1.4% ozone–oxygen mixture, with about 76% of the main beam energy transmitted and 89% of the sidelobe energy absorbed. In conclusion, this process can be adapted to other gases and laser wavelengths, providing alignment-insensitive and damage-resistant pinholes for high-repetition-rate high-energy lasers.

Eject, crash, or survive: Using machine learning to predict orbital instability of exoplanetary systems

Astronomers throughout history, including titans like Kepler and Newton, have tackled planetary dynamics and orbital instability. Despite strides taken in research, understanding the evolution of planetary orbits remains an intricate, computationally expensive, and analytically unsolved problem. I apply machine learning classification methods to numerical simulations of planetary systems in order to predict the long-term fate of the planet - whether the planet remains in a stable orbit or not. My method uses the first 41.1 years (≤ 500 orbits) of data from a planet’s simulation to calculate 17 dynamically-motivated metrics; I trained my classifier on these features to predict a planet’s stability after 107 years. At 84.33%, my classifier was comparable in accuracy to pre-existing literature, despite using significantly less computational power than most other methods. In my research, I found that the standard deviation of eccentricity, mass ratios for neighboring planets, and semi-major axis ratio with the outer planet neighbor to be the most predictive features of instability. I propose reasons for the importance of these features, their role in planetary dynamics, as well as possible explanations for why some planets were misclassified. By understanding the important metrics of instability and reasons for misclassification, we can begin to understand more about system architectures, orbital motion and dynamics, and the formation and evolution of the exoplanetary systems. This is applicable in our own Solar System, and with exoplanet discovery missions such as TESS, this research becomes especially relevant in understanding the new exoplanetary systems we discover.

Anomalous Behavior of Newtonian Hydrodynamics Coupled with Radiation Transport

This study shows that Newtonian hydrodynamics coupled with radiation transport, using a wide range of methods for treating the material-motion corrections, results in anomalous behavior. In particular, the flow of infinite-medium equilibration will accelerate whenever viewed moving past an observer in the laboratory frame. The acceleration may cause the velocity to increase exponentially in time. An exact fully-relativistic solution is derived to show that there is no acceleration, independent of the reference frame. This solution is analytic and may be used as a validation problem for the simulation of fully-relativistic radiation hydrodynamics.

Combined Creep and Fatigue Modeling

Simultaneous consideration of creep and fatigue is of paramount importance to accurately predict component life in many industrial applications. For example, growing penetration of renewable energy onto the grid is forcing many power plants to transition from base-load power generation to more complex operation modes, characterized by a combination of base-load generation and frequent start-up and shut-down cycles. The frequent start-stop of power plants is causing a significant toll in the component life due to fatigue. As such, creep alone is not adequate anymore to predict the component life. Most existing life prediction models consider creep or fatigue independently while neglect their interactions. In this presentation, we talk about some recent efforts at NETL to develop a unified modeling framework where both creep and fatigue can be considered. The creep-fatigue interaction mechanism is studied. High-throughput simulations are performed under various hold stress and hold time, and analytical expressions are fitted for the crack growth rates under creep and/or fatigue conditions demonstrating some applications of this newly developed modeling capability.

Real-time GIS Programming and Geocomputation

Streaming data generated continuously from sensor networks, mobile devices, social media platforms and other edge devices have posed significant challenges to existing computing platforms for achieving both high throughput and low latency data processing in addition to scalable computing. This entry introduces a real-time computing and programming platform for time-critical GIS (Geographic Information System) applications. In this platform, advanced streaming data processing software, such as Apache Kafka and Spark Streaming, are integrated to enable data analytics in real-time. This computing platform can also be extended to integrate GeoAI (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence) based machine learning models to leverage both historical and streaming data to achieve real-time prediction and intelligent geospatial analytics. Two real-time geospatial applications in terms of flood simulation and climate data visualization are introduced to demonstrate how real-time programming and computing can help tackle real-world problems with important societal impacts.

A new form of the Saint-Venant equations for variable topography

The solution stability of river models using the one-dimensional (1D) Saint-Venant equations can be easily undermined when source terms in the discrete equations do not satisfy the Lipschitz smoothness condition for partial differential equations. Although instability issues have been previously noted, they are typically treated as model implementation issues rather than as underlying problems associated with the form of the governing equations. This study proposes a new reference slope form of the Saint-Venant equations to ensure smooth slope source terms and eliminate one source of potential numerical oscillations. It is shown that a simple algebraic transformation of channel geometry provides a smooth reference slope while preserving the correct cross-section flow area and the total Piezometric pressure gradient that drives the flow. The reference slope method ensures the slope source term in the governing equations is Lipschitz continuous while maintaining all the underlying complexity of the real-world geometry. The validity of the mathematical concept is demonstrated with the open-source Simulation Program for River Networks (SPRNT) model in a series of artificial test cases and a simulation of a small urban creek. Validation comparisons are made with analytical solutions and the Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) model. The new method reduces numerical oscillations and instabilities without requiring ad hoc smoothing algorithms.

Using Machine Learning to Greatly Accelerate Path Integral Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) has become one of the most popular and robust approaches for modeling complicated chemical, liquid, and material systems. However, the formidable computational cost often limits its widespread application in simulations of the largest-scale systems. Furthermore, the situation becomes even more severe in cases where the hydrogen nuclei may be better described as quantized particles using a path integral representation. Here, we present a computational approach that combines machine learning with recent advances in path integral contraction schemes, and we achieve a 2 orders of magnitude acceleration over direct path integral AIMD simulation while at the same time maintaining its accuracy.
