Separations Consortium: Lignin Rich Stream Fractionation and Purification

In support of the Bioenergy Technologies Office in converting lignin to fuels and chemicals, this project develops scalable separations based on membranes and Electordeionization (EDI) to recover low molecular weight (LMW) compounds from lignin rich streams. The project addresses three technology barriers in developing the bioeconomy; (1) Cost of production (2) Selective separation of organic acid species, and (3) Advanced bioprocess development. Specifically, membrane cascades using Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) are investigated for the recovery of LMW lignin compounds from lignin rich streams such as Alkaline Pretreatment Liquor (APL), Reductive Catalytic Fractionation (RCF) oil, and Catalytic Oxidation oil. Process concepts, including dynamic filtration, are investigated to meet specific performance targets indicated by the consortium's Industrial Advisory Board for the membrane filtration including maintaining permeance > 1 LMH/bar and an overall cost target of < $1/kg of LMW lignin. EDI is investigated as an integral part of the membrane cascade to recover LMW aromatic acids and as an alternative to nanofiltration. Economic analysis of the processes is presented with a focus on minimizing energy consumption and capital expenditure. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is presented to identify key cost drivers and optimize holistic process operating conditions.

Separation of rare earth elements using supported membrane solvent extraction

A system and method for the recovery and separation of rare earth elements (REEs) are provided. The system and method include the supported membrane solvent extraction of REEs and the separation of light and heavy REEs that have been recovered from scrap permanent magnets and other electronic waste. In supported membrane solvent extraction, an organic phase consisting of an extractant and an organic solvent is immobilized in the pores of hollow fibers. An aqueous feed solution and a strip solution flow along the shell side and lumen side of the hollow fibers, respectively. The extractant functions as a carrier to selectively transport certain rare earth metal ions from the feed side to the strip side. The rare earth metals are concurrently back extracted in the strip solution, allowing processing to proceed continuously without equilibrium limitations.

Novel Diglycolamide Extractant?s Performance in Liquid-Liquid Separations for Pilot Scale Application

Modified diglycolamide (DGA) extractants show high affinity for light lanthanides and improved separation factors compared to phosphonic acids used commercially. Previous studies with DGAs included flowsheet design and implementation into solvent extraction equipment but with low extractant concentration. Modifications on the alkyl chains of previous DGA extractants led to a competitive product for light rare earth separation with a higher extractant concentration. The scope of this project is to test a recently developed DGA extractant for application in pilot scale solvent extraction equipment with single stage testing, by narrowing down scrubbing conditions, and collecting distribution values for flowsheet planning.

Separation, recovery and upgrading of biomass derived 2,3-butanediol

The invention relates to a two-way approach to isolate, recover and upgrade 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) from fermentation broth. A complete separation and recovery process for 2,3-BDO using acetalization and trans-acetalization sequence. Acetalization with butyraldehyde using heterogeneous catalysts, either Amberlyst-15® or Nafion NR50®, efficiently isolates 2,3-BDO as phase-separated protected dioxolane. The approach provides significant process advantages with easy product recovery and high recyclability of the catalyst. Trans-acetalization of dioxolane with methanol (methanolysis) followed by distillation of acetal, yielded very high purity 2,3-BDO with about 90% isolated yield. Alternatively, dioxolane is used in a process direct to methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as a BDO synthon allowing for recovery of the aldehyde.
