Calcium is associated with specific soil organic carbon decomposition products

Abstract. Calcium (Ca) may contribute to the preservation of soil organic carbon (SOC) in more ecosystems than previously thought. Here, we provide evidence that Ca is co-located with SOC compounds that are enriched in aromatic and phenolic groups, across different acidic soil types and locations with different ecosystem properties, differing in terms of climate, parent material, soil type, and vegetation. In turn, this co-localised fraction of Ca–SOC is removed through cation exchange, and the association is then only re-established during decomposition in the presence of Ca (Ca addition incubation). Thus, this highlights a causative link between decomposition and the co-location of Ca with a characteristic fraction of SOC. Decomposition increases the relative proportion of negatively charged functional groups, which can increase the propensity for the association between SOC and Ca; in turn, this association can inhibit dissolved organic carbon export or further decomposition. We propose that this mechanism could be driven by Ca hotspots at the microscale shifting local decomposition processes and thereby explaining the co-location of Ca with SOC of a specific composition across different acidic soil environments. Incorporating this biogeochemical process into Earth system models could improve our understanding, predictions, and management of carbon dynamics in soils, as well as accounting for their response to Ca-rich amendments.

Evaluation of Experimental and Predicted Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data for Systems Relevant to Biomass Fast Pyrolysis and Catalytic Upgrading

The experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the binaries relevant to the catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass have been collected and analyzed using the NIST-COSMO-SAC and NIST-modified UNIFAC models. The existing inconsistencies in the experimental data and the predicted values are discussed. For VLE with furan derivatives, PTxy data are normally reported, and the predicted values are in good agreement with them. For phenolic compounds, the gas phase compositions are available for only 36 % of the points, most results originate from a few laboratories, and each system has been typically studied in a single laboratory. The binaries are identified where more experimental VLE data are required to evaluate quality of the existing experimental and predicted results.

Thermistor connector assembly increases accuracy of measurements

Isolation of the thermistor from spurious heat transfer for accurately measuring ambient air temperatures is accomplished by a mounting consisting of a transparent plastic film bonded to a U-shaped phenolic board with depositions of aluminum on each face and upper edge, and a variable capacitor for fine tuning.

Insulation for cryogenic tanks has reduced thickness and weight

Dual seal insulation, consisting of an inner layer of sealed-cell Mylar honeycomb core and an outer helium purge channel of fiber glass reinforced phenolic honeycomb core, is used as a thin, lightweight insulation for external surfaces of cryogenic-propellant tanks.

Molding a high-density laminate

Molding press is used to form phenolic resin impregnated glass fiber cloth into a high-density, cylindrical-ring laminate. The press applies clamping pressure and heat to a mold containing the glass fiber cloth laminate, which has hydrostatic pressure applied to it by means of a specially designed pressure plug.
