Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Uppsala general catalogue of galaxies

The machine-readable version of the catalog containing descriptions of galaxies, their surrounding areas, and position angles for flattened galaxies is described. In addition to the correction of several errors discovered in a previous computerized version, a few duplicate records were removed and the record structure was revised slightly to accommodate a large data value and to remove superfluous blanks.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Stellar Spectrophotometric Atlas, 3130 A lamda 10800 A of Gunn and Stryker (1983)

A detailed description of the machine-readable version of the atlas as it is currently beng distributed from the Astronomical Data Center is given. The data were obtained with the Oke multichannel scanner on the 5-meter Hale reflector for purposes of synthesizing galaxy spectra, and the digitized atlas contains normalized spectral energy distributions, computed colors, scan line and continuum indices for 175 selected stars covering the complete ranges of spectral type and luminosity class. The documentation includes a byte-by-byte format description, a table of the indigenous characteristics of the magnetic tape file, and a sample listing of logical records exactly as they are recorded on the tape.

Dynamic fatigue of a machinable glass-ceramic

To assess the stress-corrosion susceptibility of a machinable glass-ceramic, its dynamic fatigue behavior was investigated by measuring its strength as a function of stress rate. Fracture mechanics techniques were used to analyze the results for the purpose of making lifetime predictions for components of this material. This material was concluded to have only moderate resistance (N = 30) to stress corrosion in ambient conditions. The effects of specimen size on strength were assessed for the material used in this study; it was concluded that the Weibull edge-flaw scaling law adequately describes the observed strength-size relation.

Machining of Silicon-Ribbon-Forming Dies

Carbon extension for dies used in forming silicon ribbon crystals machined precisely with help of special tool. Die extension has edges beveled toward narrow flats at top, with slot precisely oriented and centered between flats and bevels. Cutting tool assembled from standard angle cutter and circular saw or saws. Angle cutters cuts bevels while slot saw cuts slot between them. In alternative version, custom-ground edges or additional circular saws also cut flats simultaneously.

Silicon-Web-Growing Machine

Silicon replenished automatically as web is withdrawn. Semiautomatic silicon-web-growing machine set down in detailed engineering drawings. Melt level sensed with He/Ne laser beam and melt-level error signal used to control motor-driven pellet feeder, speeding up when level is low. System reduces demand upon operator's time.

Optical-Fiber-Welding Machine

Technique yields joints with average transmissivity of 91.6 percent. Electric arc passed over butted fiber ends to melt them together. Maximum optical transmissivity of joint achieved with optimum choice of discharge current, translation speed, and axial compression of fibers. Practical welding machine enables delicate and tedious joining operation performed routinely.

Application of advanced materials to rotating machines

In discussing the application of advanced materials to rotating machinery, the following topics are covered: the torque speed characteristics of ac and dc machines, motor and transformer losses, the factors affecting core loss in motors, advanced magnetic materials and conductors, and design tradeoffs for samarium cobalt motors.

Design, development and use of the finite element machine

Some of the considerations that went into the design of the Finite Element Machine, a research asynchronous parallel computer are described. The present status of the system is also discussed along with some indication of the type of results that were obtained.

A manned-machine space station construction concept

A design concept for the construction of a permanent manned space station is developed and discussed. The main considerations examined in developing the design concept are: (1) the support structure of the station be stiff enough to preclude the need for an elaborate on-orbit system to control structural response, (2) the station support structure and solar power system be compatible with existing technology, and (3) the station be capable of growing in a systematic modular fashion. The concept is developed around the assembly of truss platforms by pressure-suited astronauts operating in extravehicular activity (EVA), assisted by a machine (Assembly and Transport Vehicle, ATV) to position the astronauts at joint locations where they latch truss members in place. The ATV is a mobile platform that is attached to and moves on the station support structure using pegs attached to each truss joint. The operation of the ATV is described and a number of conceptual configurations for potential space stations are developed.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of a supplement to the Bright Star catalogue (Hoffleit, Saladyga and Wlasuk 1983)

Detailed descriptions of the three files of the machine-readable catalog are given. The files of the original tape have been restructured and the data records reformatted to produce a uniform data file having a single logical record per star and homogeneous data fields. The characteristics of the tape version as it is presently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center are given and the changes to the original tape supplied are described.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the SAO-HD-GC-DM cross index version 1983

An updated and extended machine readable version of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory star catalog (SAO) is described. A correction of all errors which were found since preparation of the original catalog which resulted from misidentifications and omissions of components in multiple star systems and missing Durchmusterung numbers (the common identifier) in the SAO Catalog are included and component identifications from the Index of Visual Double Stars (IDS) are appended to all multiple SAO entries with the same DM numbers, and lower case letter identifiers for supplemental BD stars are added. A total of 11,398 individual corrections and data additions is incorporated into the present version of the cross index.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Star catalogue (SAO) version 1984

An updated, corrected and extended machine readable version of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory star catalog (SAO) is described. Published and unpublished errors discovered in the previous version have been corrected, and multiple star and supplemental BD identifications added to stars where more than one SAO entry has the same Durchmusterung number. Henry Draper Extension (HDE) numbers have been added for stars found in both volumes of the extension. Data for duplicate SAO entries (those referring to the same star) have been blanked out, but the records themselves have been retained and flagged so that sequencing and record count are identical to the published catalog.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the general catalogue of 33342 stars for the epoch 1950 (Boss 1937)

A revised and corrected version of the machine-readable catalog has been prepared. Cross identifications of the GC stars to the HD and DM catalogs have been replaced by data from the new SAO-HD-GC-DM Cross Index (Roman, Warren and Schofield 1983), including component identifications for multiple SAO entries having identical DM numbers in the SAO Catalog, supplemental Bonner Durchmusterung stars (lower case letter designations) and codes for multiple HD stars. Additional individual corrections have been incorporated based upon errors found during analyses of other catalogs.

A new measuring machine in Paris

A new photographic measuring machine is under construction at the Paris Observatory. The amount of transmitted light is measured by a linear array of 1024 photodiodes. Carriage control, data acquisition and on line processing are performed by microprocessors, a S.E.L. 32/27 computer, and an AP 120-B Array Processor. It is expected that a Schmidt telescope plate of size 360 mm square will be scanned in one hour with pixel size of ten microns.

The role of the Automated Plate Measuring (APM) machine in developing a program to discover QSOs automatically

The scanning of a direct plate with the automatic plate measuring machine which results in the automated selection and description of images is described. The selection of QSO candidates based on color-color diagrams constructed from the APM image data and the analysis of APM raster data for QSOs selected visually from objective prism plates are also discussed.
