We present the evaluation of a solar simulator comprising a Light Emitting Diode (LED) array as its light source. While multiple applications can be envisioned for such a light source, here we focus on its use for performance testing of solar cells at Standard Test Conditions. With this in mind, we present characterization of the spatial uniformity of the irradiance and its temporal stability as well as the spectral range and spectral class. For a multisource simulator, the spectral uniformity across the test plane should also be evaluated and we discuss a method for performing this evaluation that is well suited to a solar cell performance testing application. One major advantage of this simulator is the ability to easily adjust the spectral output as needed in multijunction PV cell measurements and we also discuss this application here.

Tpt1 is a widely distributed enzyme that removes an internal RNA 2′-phosphate by transfer to NAD + , via a two-step reaction in which: (i) the RNA 2′-PO 4 attacks NAD + to form an RNA-2′-phospho-(ADP-ribose) intermediate and expel nicotinamide; and (ii) the ADP-ribose O2″ attacks the RNA 2′-phosphodiester to form 2′-OH RNA and ADP-ribose-1″,2″-cyclic phosphate products. Tpt1 can also execute a single-step ADP-ribosyltransferase reaction at a 5′-monophosphate nucleic acid terminus that installs a 5′-phospho-ADP-ribose cap structure. Here we present crystal structures of Tpt1 bound to an RNA containing an internal 2′-PO 4 mark (the substrate for the canonical Tpt1 pathway) and in a complex with 5′-AMP. We find that Tpt1 has distinct binding modes, whereby the RNA 2′-PO 4 and the AMP 5′-PO 4 are engaged by the same set of active site amino acids, but the 2′-PO 4 nucleoside and the 5′-nucleoside occupy different sites on the enzyme.
Competition between superconducting and ferromagnetic ordering at interfaces between ferromagnets (F) and superconductors (S) gives rise to several proximity effects such as odd-triplet superconductivity and spin-polarized supercurrents. A prominent example of an S/F proximity effect is the spin switch effect observed in S/F/N/F superconducting spin valve multilayers, in which the superconducting transition temperature T c is controlled by the angle Φ between the magnetic moments of the F layers separated by a nonmagnetic metallic spacer N. We carried out an experimental study of spin switch effect in Nb/Co/Cu/Co/CoO x nanowires measured as a function of bias current flowing in the plane of the layers. These measurements reveal an unexpected dependence of T c (Φ) on the bias current: T c (Φ) – T c (0) changes sign with increasing current bias. We attribute the origin of this bias dependence of the spin switch effect to a spin Hall current originating in Nb and flowing perpendicular to the plane of the multilayer, which suppresses T c of the multilayer. The bias dependence of spin switch effect can be important for hybrid F/S devices such as cryogenic memory for superconducting computers when device dimensions are scaled down to the nanometer length scale.
