Initial comparisons of solar collector performance data obtained out-of doors and with a solar simulator

A facility was constructed to evaluate solar collector performance outdoors for conditions that would be encountered by collectors if they were incorporated in a solar heating/cooling system. In addition to obtaining initial collector performance data, the outdoor facility will enable collector durability and degradation rates to be evaluated for operating periods of several months. The data obtained from the outdoor tests were compared to collector performance predicted on the basis of results obtained with a solar simulator. The performance measured outdoors was less than the predicted performance.

Electronic delay ignition module for single bridgewire Apollo standard initiator

An engineering model and a qualification model of the EDIM were constructed and tested to Scout flight qualification criteria. The qualification model incorporated design improvements resulting from the engineering model tests. Compatibility with single bridgewire Apollo standard initiator (SBASI) was proven by test firing forty-five (45) SBASI's with worst case voltage and temperature conditions. The EDIM was successfully qualified for Scout flight application with no failures during testing of the qualification unit. Included is a method of implementing the EDIM into Scout vehicle hardware and the ground support equipment necessary to check out the system.

Initialization procedures for primitive equation models

A linear analysis and comparison of the damping properties of six dynamic initialization schemes is presented, indicating that the Okamura-Rivas scheme has the most efficient damping properties over the whole frequency range, and suggesting that it should be faster than the other methods and given more stable results. The results obtained with a nonlinear shallow water equations model agree well with the linear analysis. The Okamura-Rivas scheme attains complete balance in the equivalent of 5 to 6 hours of leapfrog forecasting, and requires in this model an order of magnitude less computation than the balance equation solution.

Phase B - final definition and preliminary design study for the initial Atmospheric Cloud Physics Laboratory (ACPL): A spacelab mission payload. Work breakdown structure for phase C/D DR-MA-06 (preliminary issue)

The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Dictionary (DR-MA-06) for initial and subsequent flights of the Atmospheric Cloud Physics Laboratory (ACPL) is presented. An attempt is made to identify specific equipment and components in each of the eleven subsystems; they are listed under the appropriate subdivisions of the WBS. The reader is cautioned that some of these components are likely to change substantially during the course of the study, and the list provided should only be considered representative.

Effect of crack initiation, stable crack growth and unstable crack propagation on the crack-tip plastic zone

A technique for measuring the plastic zones associated with initial crack-tip yielding, subcritical crack growth, and unstable fracture is discussed. The results of the measurement of the locus of these yield regions, on center-cracked sheet and compact tension specimens of 7075-T6, 7075-T651, and 2024-T3 aluminum, are reported in this paper. It was found that a very accurate representation of the strains was obtained by this method and that the results added significant insight into the fracture process. The plastic zones were found to be approximately eight times wider in 2024-T3 than in the 7075-T6 sheets. The yield zones approached a maximum value after unstable fracture was attained and maintained that size through the fast fracture region. As expected, the plastic zones in the compact tension specimen were associated only with the formation of the shear lips and no plastic zones were observed in the fatigue precracked regions of either the center-cracked or compact-tension specimens.

Generalized Du Fort-Frankel methods for parabolic initial-boundary value problems

The Du Fort-Frankel difference scheme is generalized to difference operators of arbitrary high order accuracy in space and to arbitrary order of the parabolic differential operator. Spectral methods can also be used to approximate the spatial part of the differential operator. The scheme is explicit, and it is unconditionally stable for the initial value problem. Stable boundary conditions are given for two different fourth order accurate space approximations.

Minima in generalized oscillator strengths for initially excited hydrogen-like atoms

Generalized oscillator strengths for transitions from an initially excited state of a hydrogenic atom to final states (either discrete or continuum) have complicated structures, including minima and shoulders, as functions of the momentum transfer. Extensive calculations carried out in the present work have revealed certain systematics of these structures. Some implications of the minima to the energy dependence of the inner-shell ionization cross section of heavy atoms by proton impact are discussed.

Higher-order effects of initial deformation on the vibrations of crystal plates

A system of plate equations for the thickness-shear and flexural vibrations superposed on large initial deflection due to bending is derived; in the stress-strain relations, the terms associated with the fourth-order elastic stiffness coefficients are retained. An explicit formula for the change in the fundamental cut-off thickness shear frequency is obtained, and the effects of the terms associated with the fourth-order constants appear to be significant for large gradients of the rotation angles.

Initiation with an electron beam of chemical reactions of interest for visible wavelength lasers

A description is given of the first results obtained with a new shock tube-electron beam facility designed to provide a versatile means for the systematic search for laser operation among several candidate metal atom-oxidizer systems. According to the current experimental approach, metal atoms are obtained in the vapor phase by the dissociation of metal compounds. A shock tube is employed to provide a short duration flow through an array of 29 supersonic flow-mixing nozzles. A high energy electron accelerator is used for the rapid initiation of chemical reaction in a mixed flow of encapsulated metal and oxidizer.

On the stability of Galerkin methods for initial-boundary value problems for hyperbolic systems

The stability of approximating the solution of mixed initial-boundary value problems for hyperbolic systems by semidiscrete Galerkin methods is studied. It is shown that a particular straightforward Galerkin method yields an unstable approximation, and that this numerical instability is caused by an improper treatment of the boundary. Stable schemes are then presented, one of which differs from the unstable scheme only insofar as the treatment of the boundary is concerned. These stable schemes make use of a particular matrix which symmetrizes the differential system. It is therefore shown that the use of this matrix is crucial to the stability of the computations as well as for obtaining a priori bounds on the energy of the continuous system. This symmetrizing matrix is also related to the diagonalizing matrix for the system of hyperbolic equations and to the Liapunov matrix for the system of ordinary differential equations resulting from the application of Galerkin's method.

Can acoustic emission detect the initiation of fatigue cracks: Application to high-strength light alloys used in aeronautics

Acoustic emission was used for the detection of fatigue cracking in a number of high-strength light alloys used in aeronautical structures. Among the features studied were: the influence of emission frequency, the effect of surface oxidation, and the influence of grains. It was concluded that acoustic emission is an effective nondestructive technique for evaluating the initiation of fatigue cracking in such materials.

Viscous effects in tube flow initiated by an expansion wave

An examination is made of the effect of the turbulent boundary layer on the uniformity of the flow initiated by a nonsteady expansion wave traveling in a long, constant-area tube. Closed-form expressions for the flow perturbations first are obtained from the linearized equations of motion. Measured static pressure histories for both lowand high-tube Mach numbers are used for comparison. Detailed discussions of the limitations of the linearized model and its extension to high-tube Mach numbers are given. Agreement is shown between a modified version of the linearized model and the experimental results. A model of viscous nonsteady pipe flow is used to explain the nonlinear pressure decay observed at very large length-to-diameter ratios.

Initial energy and perihelion distributions of Oort-cloud comets

A Monte Carlo model of stellar perturbations of the Oort cloud is used to study the distributions in energy and perihelion of comets entering the planetary region for the first time. The model is run for a variety of initial states and a range of velocity perturbations. In all cases the resulting orbits are uniformly distributed in perihelion distance in the planetary region, q less than 20 AU. Most orbits are confined to a fairly narrow range in 1/a and hyperbolic orbits are rare.

Approximate solutions to the Navier-Stokes initial value problem

A Galerkin-Ritz procedure for any arbitrary system of field equations is shown to follow generically from 'two-functional' variational conditions. The initial-value problem for boundary-free incompressible Navier-Stokes flow is solved analytically in the two-parameter-function approximation.

Initiation of non-tropical thunderstorms by solar activity

A theory of thunderstorm initiation is proposed to account for the statistical correlation between solar activity and thunderstorm occurrence in middle to high latitudes. It is suggested that cosmic ray decreases and/or high-energy solar protons associated with active solar events enhance the electric field at low heights so that, if appropriate meteorological conditions are present during a solar event, the atmospheric electric field enhancement may be sufficient to trigger thunderstorm development. Statistical correlations and atmospheric electric effects are described. The theory could be tested if the possible forcing functions and the responding atmospheric electrical and ionic species' characteristics were measured.
