A proposal has been conceived to levitate and trap mesoscopic particles using radio frequency (RF) fields in a superconducting RF(SRF) cavity. Exploiting the intrinsic characteristics of an SRF cavity, this proposal aims at overcoming a major limit faced by state-of-the-art laser trapping techniques. The goal of the proposal is to establish a foundation to enable observation of quantum phenomena of an isolated mechanical oscillator interacting with microwave fields. An experiment supported by LDRD funding at JLab has started to address R&D issues relevant to these new research directions using existing SRF facilities at JLab. The success of this experiment would establish its groundbreaking relevance to quantum information science and technology, which may lead to applications in precision force measurement sensors, quantum memories, and alternative quantum computing implementations with promises for superior coherence characteristics and scalability well beyond the start-of-the-art. In this contribution, we will introduce the proposal and basic consideration of the experiment.

This poster presents the latest results highlighted in SMART phase II task 4 of fracture network and mapping based on IBDP field data measurement. The results will be coupled into the dynamic modeling and simulation study to insight the impact of the fracture in the reservoir system. Such impacts will be applied to AI/ML development for training and test for science-informed decision making support for CO2 storage.

One of the significant source of radio frequency loss in superconducting microwave cavities is the trapped residual magnetic field during the cooldown due to the incomplete Messier effect. The sensitivity of flux trapping depends on the distribution of impurities, network of dislocations and defects which pin vortices. Recent advancement in cavity processing techniques resulted in very high quality factors with impurity doping, however the rf loss related to the flux trapping increases. High quality factor in SRF cavities is not only limited to particle accelerators but also emerging as an application to quantum computing and quantum information science. In this presentation, we present the results of measurements of flux trapping sensitivity on several 1.3 GHz elliptical accelerating cavities with different grain size, impurity content and surface preparations.
Strong motivation for investing in quantum sensing arises from the need to investigate phenomena that are very weakly coupled to the matter and fields well described by the Standard Model. These can be related to the problems of dark matter, dark sectors not necessarily related to dark matter (for example sterile neutrinos), dark energy and gravity, fundamental constants, and problems with the Standard Model itself including the Strong CP problem in QCD. Resulting experimental needs typically involve the measurement of very low energy impulses or low power periodic signals that are normally buried under large backgrounds. This report documents the findings of the 2023 Quantum Sensors for High Energy Physics workshop which identified enabling quantum information science technologies that could be utilized in future particle physics experiments, targeting high energy physics science goals.
Quantum information science (QIS) is creating a transformative opportunity to improve processes for energy production, distribution, and consumption. In this presentation, we will show the works that are currently pursued into two major directions, (i) quantum sensing and (ii) quantum computing is undergoing in order to find applications in the areas of carbon captures, critical minerals and gas sensing applications.

The objective of the US Department of Energy’s SMART Initiative, i.e., Science-informed Machine Learning (ML) for Accelerating Real-Time Decisions in Subsurface Applications, is to showcase how the utilization of ML can significantly improve efficiency and effectiveness of field-scale commercial carbon storage operations. This paper will present the results from the current phase of SMART (field deployment) for demonstrating the applicability of ML-based tools and workflows for: (a) virtual learning during the pre-injection permitting phase, (b) advanced storage reservoir imaging to better characterize fractures and faults, and (c) dynamic storage reservoir modelling and optimization to inform operational decision making and visualization of system evolution.
