An SCR inverter for electric vehicles

An inverter for an electric vehicle propulsion application has been designed and constructed to excite a polyphase induction motor from a fixed propulsion battery source. The inverter, rated at 35kW peak power, is fully regenerative and permits vehicle operation in both the forward and reverse directions. Thyristors are employed as the power switching devices arranged in a dc bus commutated topology. This paper describes the major role the controller plays in generating the motor excitation voltage and frequency to deliver performance similar to dc systems. Motoring efficiency test data for the controller are presented. It is concluded that an SCR inverter in conjunction with an ac induction motor is a viable alternative to present dc vehicle propulsion systems on the basis of performance and size criteria.

Power-Factor Controller With Regenerative Braking

Modified power-factor motor-control circuit operates motor as a phase-controlled generator when load attempts to turn at higher than synchronous speed. An induction motor is required to act at times as a brake. Circuit modification allows power-factor controller to save energy in motoring mode and convert automatically to an induction-generator controller in generating, or braking, mode.

Determination of efficiencies, loss mechanisms, and performance degradation factors in chopper controlled dc vehical motors. Section 2: The time dependent finite element modeling of the electromagnetic field in electrical machines: Methods and applications

The time dependent solution of the magnetic field is introduced as a method for accounting for the variation, in time, of the machine parameters in predicting and analyzing the performance of the electrical machines. The method of time dependent finite element was used in combination with an also time dependent construction of a grid for the air gap region. The Maxwell stress tensor was used to calculate the airgap torque from the magnetic vector potential distribution. Incremental inductances were defined and calculated as functions of time, depending on eddy currents and saturation. The currents in all the machine circuits were calculated in the time domain based on these inductances, which were continuously updated. The method was applied to a chopper controlled DC series motor used for electric vehicle drive, and to a salient pole sychronous motor with damper bars. Simulation results were compared to experimentally obtained ones.

Electrical power generating system

An alternating current power generation system adopted to inject power in an already powered power line is discussed. The power generating system solves to adjustably coup an induction motor, as a generator, to an ac power line wherein the motor and power line are connected through a triac. The triac is regulated to normally turn on at a relatively late point in each half cycle of its operation, whereby at less than operating speed, and thus when the induction motor functions as a motor rather than as a generator, power consumption from the line is substantially reduced. The principal application will be for windmill powered generation.

Jay Carter Enterprises, Incorporated steam engine

The Small Community Solar Thermal Power Experiment (SCSE) selected an organic rankine cycle (ORC) engine driving a high speed permanent magnet alternator (PMA) as the baseline power conversion subsystem (PCS) design. The back-up conceptual PCS design is a steam engine driving an induction alternator delivering power directly to the grid. The development of the automotive reciprocating simple rankine cycle steam engine and how an engine of similar design might be incorporated into the SCSE is discussed. A description of the third generation automotive engine is included along with some preliminary test data. Tests were conducted with the third generation engine driving an induction alternator delivering power directly to the grid. The purpose of these tests is to further verify the effects of expander inlet temperature, input thermal power level, expansion ratio, and other parameters affecting engine performance to aid in the development of an SCSE PCS.

A pulse-forming network for particle path visualization

A procedure is described for visualizing nonsteady fluid flow patterns over a wide velocity range using discrete nonluminous particles. The paramount element responsible for this capability is a pulse-forming network with variable inductance that is used to modulate the discharge of a fixed amount of electrical energy through a xenon flashtube. The selectable duration of the resultant light emission functions as a variable shutter so that particle path images of constant length can be recorded. The particles employed as flow markers are hydrogen bubbles that are generated by electrolysis in a water tunnel. Data are presented which document the characteristics of the electrical circuit and establish the relation of particle velocity to both section inductance and film exposure.

One-step dual purpose joining technique

This fastener used in induction heating is a wire screen basically of an eddy current carrying material such as carbon steel. Selected wires in the screen are copper, sheathed in an insulating material. The screen is placed between two sheets of thermoplastics. When inductively heated, the composite softens and flows around the apertures of the screen. After this heating and joining, the copper wires may be used to conduct electricity.

Electromagnetic deep-probing (100-1000 KMS) of the Earth's interior from artificial satellites: Constraints on the regional emplacement of crustal resources

The two stages of analysis of MAGSAT magnetic data which are designed to evaluate electromagnetic induction effects are described. The first stage consists of comparison of data from contiguous orbit passes over large scale geologic boundaries, such as ocean-land interfaces, at several levels of magnetic disturbance. The purpose of these comparisons is to separate induction effects from effects of lithospheric magnetization. The procdure for reducing the data includes: (1) identifying and subtracting quiet time effects; (2) modelling and subtracting first order ring current effects; and (3) projecting an orbit track onto a map as a nearly straight line so it can serve as an axis on which to plot the corresponding orbit pass data in the context of geography. The second stage consists of comparison of MAGSAT data with standard hourly observatory data. The purpose is to constrain the time evolution of ionospheric and magnetospheric current systems. Qualitative features of the ground based dataset are discussed. Methods for reducing the ground based data are described.

Improved transistorized AC motor controller for battery powered urban electric passenger vehicles

An ac motor controller for an induction motor electric vehicle drive system was designed, fabricated, tested, evaluated, and cost analyzed. A vehicle performance analysis was done to establish the vehicle tractive effort-speed requirements. These requirements were then converted into a set of ac motor and ac controller requirements. The power inverter is a three-phase bridge using power Darlington transistors. The induction motor was optimized for use with an inverter power source. The drive system has a constant torque output to base motor speed and a constant horsepower output to maximum speed. A gear shifting transmission is not required. The ac controller was scaled from the base 20 hp (41 hp peak) at 108 volts dec to an expanded horsepower and battery voltage range. Motor reversal was accomplished by electronic reversal of the inverter phase sequence. The ac controller can also be used as a boost chopper battery charger. The drive system was tested on a dynamometer and results are presented. The current-controlled pulse width modulation control scheme yielded improved motor current waveforms. The ac controller favors a higher system voltage.

Modifications and testing of a 4-95 Stirling engine for solar applications

The modifications and testing of a standard Stirling engine, required for connection to a 25 kW induction alternator, for use with a solar thermal parabolic dish electric module is described. Power was absorbed by a GE induction alternator connected to the utility grid. Also included are the results from recent testing of another solar engine at the DOE-Georgia Tech solar site. It was done in parallel with the testing at Edwards for the purpose of comparing performance of two solar-only receivers, which were based on the standard 4-95 involute heat exchanger.

Improved SCR ac Motor Controller for Battery Powered Urban Electric Vehicles

An improved ac motor controller, which when coupled to a standard ac induction motor and a dc propulsion battery would provide a complete electric vehicle power train with the exception of the mechanical transmission and drive wheels was designed. In such a system, the motor controller converts the dc electrical power available at the battery terminals to ac electrical power for the induction motor in response to the drivers commands. The performance requirements of a hypothetical electric vehicle with an upper weight bound of 1590 kg (3500 lb) were used to determine the power rating of the controller. Vehicle acceleration capability, top speed, and gradeability requisites were contained in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Schedule 227a(d) driving cycle. The important capabilities contained in this driving cycle are a vehicle acceleration requirement of 0 to 72.4 kmph (0 to 45 mph) in 28 seconds a top speed of 88.5 kmph (55 mph), and the ability to negotiate a 10% grade at 48 kmph (30 mph). A 10% grade is defined as one foot of vertical rise per 10 feet of horizontal distance.

Electromagnetic deep-probing (100-1000 kms) of the Earth's interior from artificial satellites: Constraints on the regional emplacement of crustal resources

The reconnaissance phase of using satellite observtions to studying electromagnetic induction in the solid earth is summarized. Several points are made: (1) satellite data apparently suffer far less from the effects of near surface lateral heterogeneities in the earth than do ground-based data; (2) zonal ionospheric currents during the recovery phase of major magnetic storms appear to be minimal, at least in the dawn and dusk sectors wher MAGSAT was flown; hence the internal contributions that satellites observe during these times is in fact due primarily to induction in the Earth with little or no contribution from ionospheric currents; and (3) the interpretation of satellite data in terms of primitive electromagnetic response functions, while grossly over-simplified, results in a surprisingly well-resolved radius for an equivalent super-conductor representing the conductivity region of the Earth's interior (5,370 + or - 120 km).

A cross spectral analysis of high-latitude Pc 5 pulsations in the morning sector

An analysis of the spatial phase and amplitude structures of the ground Pc 5 pulsations in the morning sector was carried out using data from the North American IMS magnetometer network. Signals in the X, Y, and Z components were found to propagate from noon to the nightside with an apparent phase velocity of 13 km/sec. The phase was determined to vary with latitude, with total latitudinal phase differences of 200 and 90 deg, respectively, for the X and Y components. Corresponding latitudinal phase differences in the vertical components were 550 deg for the Alaska chain, and 360 deg for the Fort Churchill chain. Phase variation in the Fort Churchill chain was attributed to the ionospheric Hall current related to the field line resonance and the earth induction current. The earth induction current in the shallower regions near Fort Yukon is a necessary factor to explain the large variation in the Alaska chain.

Observations of large magnetospheric electric fields during the onset phase of a substorm

An auroral substorm is a highly transient process which is triggered on auroral L shells and leads to an abrupt change of state in the nightside magnetosphere. Direct measurements of electric fields in the outer magnetosphere are of critical importance to understand the processes involved in sudden substorm enhancements. Shepard et al. (1980) reported direct measurements of electric fields from the GEOS 2 satellite at equatorial latitudes which showed 15 mV/m westward inductive electric fields in association with tail collapses. Similar direct electric field measurements of the westward inductive electric field at low latitudes from the ISEE 1 satellite during the onset phase of an auroral substorm are reported in the present investigation. The observations show a rapid inward magnetic field (westward electric field) motion near midnight at low or equatorial latitudes simultaneous with the sudden onset of auroral substorm enhancements near the foot of the satellite field line.

Magnetic field line reconnection experiments. V - Current disruptions and double layers

An investigation is conducted of the stability of a large laboratory plasma current sheet, which has been generated in the process of magnetic field line reconnection, with respect to local current increases. Magnetic flux variations in regions remote from the current sheet generate an inductive voltage in the current loop that drops off inside the plasma in the form of a potential double layer, leading to particle acceleration with velocities much larger than those expected from the steady state electric fields in the plasma. A model for the mechanism of the current disruptions is formulated in which the potential structure leads to ion expulsion, creating a localized density drop. The associated current drop in an inductive circuit drives the potential structure, providing feedback for the disruptive instability. Similarities to, and differences from, magnetospheric substorm phenomena are noted.
