Direct Evidence of Graphene-Induced Molecular Reorientation in Polymer Films

For the first time, direct evidence of graphene-induced molecular reorientation in polymer films using polarization modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PMIRRAS) are presented. By creating favorable electrostatic interactions, graphene-polymer interfaces can be controlled by varying polymer and solvent composition. After trans of unmodified graphene from copper onto a polymer substrate, polymer chain rearrangement relative to the orientation at the polymer-copper interface is observed using PM-IRRAS. Transfer success is characterized using both optical transmission measurements and Raman spectroscopy to quantify the transfer fidelity, i.e. graphene coverage fraction. Taken together, oxygencontaining poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) shows more polymer chain rearrangement and better graphene coverage compared to oxygen-free polyethylene. Polymer composition seems to dominate graphene-polymer interactions while solvent choice has a smaller effect on transfer quality. These results are the first direct measurement of this effect and point towards the possibility of engineering graphene-polymer interactions for specific applications.

Low-Oxidized Siloxene Nanosheets with High Capacity, Capacity Retention, and Rate Capability in Lithium-Based Batteries

The mechanical degradation experienced by Si electrodes during Li (de)alloying reactions can potentially be mitigated by using Si-based materials with layered 2D geometries. Such materials are expected to exhibit favorable mechanical properties and be capable of buffering the volume change associated with (de)lithitation. In this work, 2D siloxene nanosheets are synthesized using a facile topotactic reaction followed by ultrasonication as an exfoliation step. Here, detailed structural and chemical characterization via electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy is conducted, revealing a low-oxidized siloxene nanosheet material with only 15% surface Si-oxide. The obtained siloxene nanosheets are tested as Li-ion negative electrodes in lithium-based electrochemical cells. The cells exhibit high rate capability with a capacity of 935 mAh g –1 at 3200 mA g –1 and ≈99.5% coulombic efficiency. The inclusion of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) in the electrolyte improves capacity retention over 200 cycles from 13% to 77% at 1000 mA g –1 . This behavior is attributed to the FEC decomposition forming a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with higher ion conductivity and robust LiF/Li x PO y F z content, as characterized via XPS Raman spectroscopy.

Targeting Gut Bacteria Using Inulin‐Conjugated Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Abstract To facilitate the creation of novel nanocarrier systems targeting the intestinal microbiome, inulin‐conjugated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are described herein for the first time. Surface functionalization is achieved on either hydrophilic or hydrophobic mesoporous nanoparticles using different conjugation methods. The targeting performance of the resulting materials is assessed and compared upon incubation with human stool. It appears that amide formation is the most favorable coupling method on hydrophilic MSNs to achieve the desired bioconjugate. Remarkably, high affinity of gut bacteria to the conjugated particles can be obtained, paving the way to novel targeted drug delivery systems.

Polarity‐Driven Atomic Displacements at the 2D Mg 2 TiO 4 ‐MgO (001) Oxide Interface for Hosting Potential Interlayer Excitons

Abstract Interlayer excitons in solid‐state systems have emerged as candidates for realizing novel platforms ranging from excitonic transistors and optical qubits to exciton condensates. Interlayer excitons have been discovered in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, with large exciton binding energies and the ability to form various van der Waals heterostructures. Here, an oxide system consisting of a single unit cell of Mg 2 TiO 4 on MgO (001) is proposed as a platform for hosting interlayer excitons. Using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular beam epitaxy growth, and in situ crystal truncation rod measurements, it is shown that the Mg 2 TiO 4 ‐MgO interface can be precisely controlled to yield an internal electric field suitable for hosting interlayer excitons. The atoms in the polar Mg 2 TiO 4 layers are observed to be displaced to reduce polarity at the interface with the non‐polar MgO (001) surface. Such polarity‐driven atomic displacements strongly affect electrostatics of the film and the interface, resulting in localization of filled and empty band‐edge states in different layers of the Mg 2 TiO 4 film. The DFT calculations suggest that the electronic structure is favorable for localization of photoexcited electrons in the bottom layer and holes in the top layer, which may bind to form interlayer exciton states.

Orientation Control in Epitaxial PdO Thin Films Grown on MgO (001) – Role of Oxygen Chemical Potential

Control of crystal orientations in thin films of functional materials allowsedictive tuning of their strain states, electronic properties, and surface chemical reactivity. Here, conditions for orientation control in epitaxial PdO films are investigated. Due to its tetragonal structure, PdO can form two orientational relationships with the MgO (001). It is shown that, under an oxygen-rich environment provided by oxygen-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy, both (00l)- and (100)-oriented PdO domains form on MgO (001). Subsequent thermal annealing in a vacuum promotes film restructuring to a predominantly (100)-oriented PdO with improved crystallinity. Ab initio calculations reveal that the (001) orientation has lower strain energy but weaker interfacial interactions and serves as an oxygen vacancy sink, whereas the (100) orientation benefits from significantly stronger MgO─PdO bonding. Consequently (100)-oriented domains become favored under oxygen-poor conditions. A mechanism is proposed whereby vacuum annealing drives orientation transformation by generating oxygen vacancies that destabilize the (001) domains and promote (100) ordering. These findings deepen the understanding of how oxygen content impacts interfacial stability and reorganization, thereby offering a route to tune domain orientations in oxide thin films.

Broadband and Tunable Microwave Absorption Properties from Large Magnetic Loss in Ni–Zn Ferrite

Highly effective electromagnetic (EM) wave absorber materials with strong reflection loss (RL) and a wide absorption bandwidth (EBW) in gigahertz (GHz) frequencies are crucial for advanced wireless applications and portable electronics. Traditional microwave absorbers lack magnetic loss and struggle with impedance matching, while ferrites are stable, exhibit excellent magnetic and dielectric losses, and offer better impedance matching. However, achieving the desired EBW in ferrites remains a challenge, necessitating further composition design. In this study, impedance matching is successfully enhanced and EBW in Ni–Zn ferrite is broadened by successive doping with Mn and Co , without incorporation of any polymer filler. It is found that Ni 0.4 Co 0.1 Zn 0.5 Fe 1.9 Mn 0.1 O 4 material exhibits exceptional EM wave absorption, with a maximum RL of −48.7 dB. It also featured a significant EBW of 10.8 GHz, maintaining a 90% absorption rate (RL < −10 dB) for a thickness of 4.5 mm. These outstanding properties result from substantial magnetic losses and favorable impedance matching. These findings represent a significant step forward in the development of microwave absorber materials, addressing EM wave pollution concerns within GHz frequencies, including the frequency band used in popular 5G technology.

Surface Doping Boosts Triplet Generation Yield in Perovskite-Sensitized Upconversion

Triplet–triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) can efficiently generate higher energy photons at low relative fluences. Bulk metal halide perovskites have offered promise in efficiently sensitizing molecular triplet states in the solid state, necessary for the integration of TTA-UC into device-based applications. Recent work focused on TTA-UC from a rubrene triplet annihilator sensitized by perovskite thin films has established relatively efficient charge extraction from the perovskite, forming the triplet exciton in rubrene. Yet, the specifics underpinning charge transfer at the perovskite/rubrene interface are not fully elucidated. Here, to improve device performance and study the properties governing charge transfer at the interface, various organic solvents are explored to treat the perovskite surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy show a difference in the electronic band structure, where both n- and p-type terminated perovskite surfaces are observed depending on the solvent used. Supported by optical spectroscopy, the impact of the perovskite electronic structure is monitored, indicating that n-type perovskite sensitizers feature higher TTA-UC efficiencies due to favorable band bending resulting in efficient hole-mediated triplet formation. Overall, the tuning of the electronic structure of the perovskite sensitizer through solvent treatment is shown to be a key force in tuning the mechanism of efficient triplet generation.

Supercritical Methanol Solvolysis and Catalysis for the Conversion of Delignified Woody Biomass into Light Alcohol Gasoline Bioblendstock

Supercritical methanol (SCM) solvolysis and catalysis has recently emerged as a promising pathway to produce gasoline-range light alcohols from woody biomass through staged depolymerization and hydro-deoxygenation (DHDO). Here, structure-property relationships of Cu"M"AlO x catalysts (M = Mg, Zr, and Ce) are examined for upgrading delignified hybrid poplar via SCM-DHDO. CuCeAlO x displays the highest activity, increasing the C 2 -C 7 alcohol production rate and selectivity by twofold in batch reactions, and >50% in semicontinuous reactions relative to the current state-of-the-art CuMgAlO x . The performance of CuCeAlOx is correlated with its high reducibility and acidity. Cu sintering and biogenic impurity poisoning are identified as possible deactivation mechanisms over 60 h of continuous testing. The gasoline-range SCM-DHDO products are comprised of primarily aliphatic alcohols that result in improved energy density and favorably reduced vapor pressure, relative to ethanol, with the tradeoff of nonsynergistic octane blending with conventional gasoline and lower oxidation stability. Overall, this work highlights the potential to produce suitable light oxygenates by SCM-DHDO processing for gasoline bioblendstock applications.

Decarbonization of the Electric Power Sector and Implications for Low-Cost Hydrogen Production from Water Electrolysis

Increasing development of wind and solar generation in the power sector can create economic opportunities for the deployment of water electrolyzers that produce hydrogen. Temporal variation in the marginal cost of energy in future decarbonized grids can make it favorable for electrolyzers to dispatchably ramp hydrogen production up and down in response to low- and high-cost times. Using this strategy, low-cost hydrogen production is enabled by electrolyzers that are low-capital cost and tolerant to frequent on/off cycling. Ramping down hydrogen production to a designated turndown ratio can avoid performance degradation caused by on/off cycling by not shutting the electrolyzer completely off. This comes with a slight cost penalty which can be minimized if the turndown ratio is low (i.e., the system ramps down hydrogen production to close to zero). These results suggest that electrolyzers integrated into future power systems are likely to benefit from the ability to ramp operation up and down quickly and operate in a standby mode. This analysis forms a basis for comparative tradeoffs between electrolyzer capital cost, operating strategy, and system durability and demonstrates the importance of considering all three factors in technoeconomic analysis.

An Optimized Fibril Network Morphology Enables High‐Efficiency and Ambient‐Stable Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract Morphological stability is crucially important for the long‐term stability of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Many high‐efficiency PSCs suffer from metastable morphology, resulting in severe device degradation. Here, a series of copolymers is developed by manipulating the content of chlorinated benzodithiophene‐4,8‐dione (T1‐Cl) via a random copolymerization approach. It is found that all the copolymers can self‐assemble into a fibril nanostructure in films. By altering the T1‐Cl content, the polymer crystallinity and fibril width can be effectively controlled. When blended with several nonfullerene acceptors, such as TTPTT‐4F, O‐INIC3, EH‐INIC3, and Y6, the optimized fibril interpenetrating morphology can not only favor charge transport, but also inhibit the unfavorable molecular diffusion and aggregation in active layers, leading to excellent morphological stability. The work demonstrates the importance of optimization of fibril network morphology in realizing high‐efficiency and ambient‐stable PSCs, and also provides new insights into the effect of chemical structure on the fibril network morphology and photovoltaic performance of PSCs.

Pulsed Light Synthesis of High Entropy Nanocatalysts with Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Prolonged Stability for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The ability to synthesize compositionally complex nanostructures rapidly is a key to high-throughput functional materials discovery. In addition to being time-consuming, a majority of conventional materials synthesis processes closely follow thermodynamics equilibria, which limit the discovery of new classes of metastable phases such as high entropy oxides (HEO). Herein, a photonic flash synthesis of HEO nanoparticles at timescales of milliseconds is demonstrated. By leveraging the abrupt heating and cooling cycles induced by a high-power-density xenon pulsed light, mixed transition metal salt precursors undergo rapid chemical transformations. Hence, nanoparticles form within milliseconds with a strong affinity to bind to the carbon substrate. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity measurements of the synthesized nanoparticles demonstrate two orders of magnitude prolonged stability at high current densities, without noticeable decay in performance, compared to commercial IrO 2 catalyst. This superior catalytic activity originates from the synergistic effect of different alloying elements mixed at a high entropic state. It is found that Cr addition influences surface activity the most by promoting higher oxidation states, favoring optimal interaction with OER intermediates. The proposed high-throughput method opens new pathways toward developing next-generation functional materials for various electronics, sensing, and environmental applications, in addition to renewable energy conversion.

Crossbreeding Effect of Chalcogenation and Iodination on Benzene Additives Enables Optimized Morphology and 19.68% Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells

Volatile solid additives have attracted increasing attention in optimizing the morphology and improving the performance of currently dominated non-fullerene acceptor-based organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the underlying principles governing the rational design of volatile solid additives remain elusive. Herein, a series of efficient volatile solid additives are successfully developed by the crossbreeding effect of chalcogenation and iodination for optimizing the morphology and improving the photovoltaic performances of OSCs. Five benzene derivatives of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DOB), 1-iodo-4-methoxybenzene (OIB), 1-iodo-4-methylthiobenzene (SIB), 1,4-dimethylthiobenzene (DSB) and 1,4-diiodobenzene (DIB) are systematically studied, where the widely used DIB is used as the reference. The effect of chalcogenation and iodination on the overall property is comprehensively investigated, which indicates that the versatile functional groups provided various types of noncovalent interactions with the host materials for modulating the morphology. Among them, SIB with the combination of sulphuration and iodination enabled more appropriate interactions with the host blend, giving rise to a highly ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. As a result, the binary OSCs based on PM6:L8-BO and PBTz-F:L8-BO as well as the ternary OSCs based on PBTz-F:PM6:L8-BO achieved impressive high PCEs of 18.87%, 18.81% and 19.68%, respectively, which are among the highest values for OSCs.

Tailoring Ion Transport in Li 3‐3y Ho 1+y Cl 6‐x Br x via Transition‐Metal Free Structural Planes and Charge Carrier Distribution

Abstract Localized atomistic disorder in halide‐based solid electrolytes (SEs) can be leveraged to boost Li + mobility. In this study, Li + transport in structurally modified Li 3 HoCl 6 , via Br − introduction and Li + deficiency, is explored. The optimized Li 3‐3 y Ho 1+ y Cl 6‐ x Br x achieves an ionic conductivity of 3.8 mS cm −1 at 25 °C, the highest reported for holmium halide materials. 6,7 Li nuclear magnetic resonance and relaxometry investigations unveil enhanced ion dynamics with bromination, attaining a Li + motional rate neighboring 116 MHz. X‐ray diffraction analyses reveal mixed‐anion‐induced phase transitions with disproportionate octahedral expansions and distortions, creating Ho‐free planes with favorable energetics for Li + migration. Bond valence site energy analysis highlights preferred Li + transport pathways, particularly in structural planes devoid of Ho 3+ blocking effects. Molecular dynamics simulations corroborate enhanced Li + diffusion with Br − introduction into Li 3 HoCl 6 . Li‐Ho electrostatic repulsions in the (001) plane presumably drive Li + diffusion into the Ho‐free (002) layer, enabling rapid intraplanar Li + motion and exchange between the 2d and 4h sites. Li 3‐3 y Ho 1+ y Cl 6‐ x Br x also demonstrates good battery cycling stability. These findings offer valuable insights into the intricate correlations between structure and ion transport and will help guide the design of high‐performance fast ion conductors for all‐solid‐state batteries.

Facet-Dependent Cold Welding of Au Nanorods Revealed by Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

Cold welding of metals at the nanoscale has been demonstrated to play a significant role in bottom-up manufacturing and self-healing processes of nanostructures and nanodevices. However, the welding mechanism at the nanoscale is not well understood. In this study, a comprehensive demonstration of the cold welding process of gold nanorods with different modes is presented through in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the nanorods are welded through the facet-dependent atomic surface diffusion and rearrangement along {100} facets. The density functional theory calculations indicate that the preferred coalescence of two {100} surfaces is thermodynamically favorable. Unlike the prevalent “oriented attachment” in the nanoparticle coalescence, the misalignment of nanorod orientations and local stresses can induce grain boundaries and stacking faults in the welded interface.

Technoeconomic Insights into Metal Hydrides for Stationary Hydrogen Storage

Abstract Metal hydrides (MHs) are promising candidates for storing hydrogen at ambient conditions at high volumetric energy densities. Recent developments suggest hydride‐based systems can cycle and operate at favorable pressures and temperatures that work well with fuel cells used in stationary power applications. In this study, we present a comprehensive design and cost analysis of MH‐based long duration hydrogen storage facilities for a variety of power end users (0 to 20 megawatts (MW) supplied over 0 to 100 hours), to offer insights on technical targets for material development and operation strategies. Our findings indicate that hydride‐based storage systems hold significant size advantage in physical footprint, requiring up to 65% less land than 170‐bar compressed gas storage. Metal hydride systems can be cost competitive with 350‐bar compressed gas systems, with TiFe 0.85 Mn 0.05 achieving $0.45/kWh and complex MH Mg(NH 2 ) 2 ‐2.1LiH‐0.1KH achieving $0.38/kWh. Extending charging times and increasing operating cycles significantly reduce levelized cost of storage, especially for complex MHs. Key strategies to further enhance the competitiveness of MHs include leveraging waste heat from fuel cells, reducing use of critical minerals, and achieving MH production costs of US$10/kg.

High‐Speed Slot‐Die Coating with Donor‐Priority Rapid Aggregation Kinetics for Improved Morphology and Efficiency in Ecofriendly Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Solution‐processable organic solar cells (OSCs) represent a promising renewable photovoltaic technology with significant potential for eco‐compatible production. While high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have been achieved in OSCs, scaling this technology for high‐throughput manufacturing remains challenging. Key reason lies in the lack of efficient control strategies for the complex and long‐duration morphology evolution during high‐speed coating process with ecofriendly solvents. Here, a donor‐priority rapid aggregation process (DP‐RAP) scheme is proposed to solve this issue by adjusting the aggregation kinetics of donor and acceptor components. DP‐RAP enables blends with a nanoscale fiber network structure and favorable crystallinity, which contributes to balanced carrier transport and reduced recombination losses. As a result, the PCE is improved from 14.3% (reference) to 17.4% (DP‐RAP) for ultra‐high speed coated PM6:BTP‐eC9 devices in atmosphere, which is one of the highest values for non‐halogenated solvent‐processed solar cells at coating speeds of 500 mm s −1 . Moreover, the DP‐RAP based devices remain a stable PCE of approximately 17.4% across a broad range of coating speeds (20–500 mm s −1 ), illustrating its tolerance to the varied manufacturing conditions. This work highlights a promising avenue for the high‐speed, ecofriendly production of efficient OSCs, pushing the boundaries of practical manufacturing in renewable energy technologies.

Facet‐dependent Heterogeneous Fenton Reaction Mechanisms on Hematite Nanoparticles for (Photo)catalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Although heterogeneous photo‐Fenton reactions on nanoparticulate iron oxides effectively degrade organic pollutants, the underlying surface mechanisms remain debated. Here, we demonstrate how these pathways are modulated by specific hematite crystal facets. To investigate the influence of particle surface structure, methylene blue (MB) adsorption and photodegradation kinetics are examined using facet‐engineered hematite nanoparticles with distinct exposed facets. The results reveal that MB photodegradation strongly depends on both pH and facet orientation. When normalized by surface area, (116) facet shows higher photodegradation activity than those with (104) or (001) facets. This enhanced activity is attributed to favorable electronic structure and surface characteristics, including a smaller optical bandgap, faster charge transfer, and superior H 2 O 2 decomposition. In contrast, the photodegradation capacity follows (104) 〉 (116) 〉 (001), primarily due to the higher density of surface‐active sites on the (104) facet. These sites promote coupled MB adsorption and degradation, enabling removal of a greater overall quantity of MB. Additionally, under high pH conditions, hematite can degrade MB in the dark, with capacities following (001) ≫ (116) 〉 (104). These findings underscore the critical catalytic role of specific hematite surfaces and advance the understanding of facet‐dependent photoinduced redox chemistry at mineral–water interfaces.

Asymmetric Character of the Ferroelectric Phase Transition and Charged Domain Walls in a Hybrid Improper Ferroelectric

Abstract In improper ferroelectrics, the spontaneous ordering is typically driven by a structural distortion or a magnetic spin alignment. The induced electric polarization is only a secondary effect. This dependence is a rich source for unusual phenomena and ferroelectric domain configurations for proper, polarization‐driven ferroelectrics. This study focuses on the polar domain structure and the hysteretic behavior at the ferroelectric phase transition in Ca 3 Mn 1.9 Ti 0.1 O 7 as a representative of the recently discovered hybrid improper ferroelectric class of multiferroics. Combining optical second harmonic generation and Raman spectroscopy gives access to the spontaneous structural distortion and the resulting improper electric polarization. This study shows that hybrid improper ferroelectrics contrast proper and improper ferroelectrics in several ways. Most intriguingly, adjacent ferroelectric domains favor head‐to‐head and tail‐to‐tail domain walls over charge‐neutral configurations. Furthermore, the phase transition occurs in an asymmetric fashion. The regime of phase coexistence of the nonpolar and polar phases shows a clear and abrupt upper temperature limit. In contrast, the coexistence toward low temperatures is best described as a fade‐out process, where 100‐nm‐sized islands of the nonpolar phase expand deep into the polar phase.
