Flexible Integration of Diverse HVAC Technologies in EnergyPlus via Python-Enabled Workflows

Analysis of advanced controls and novel system types is often not directly feasible in building energy simulation tools. Various techniques extend building energy simulation tool capabilities to allow the use of user-defined scripts and programs, but these approaches have limitations. The EnergyPlus Python plugin offers users new flexibility to use EnergyPlus to call an external Python module at specific points in the simulation, as well as to use Python to call EnergyPlus functionality through an application programming interface (API). This paper presents four case studies leveraging the EnergyPlus Python plugin to facilitate analysis of advanced controls and system types. The use of the Python plugin offers greater modularity and flexibility relative to previous approaches, is less error prone, and is simpler for users to adopt. The Python plugin allows EnergyPlus to be used in a more flexible manner and to accommodate the expanding realm of energy modeling applications.

Development and Experimental Validation of a High-Power DC Distribution Testbed for Advanced Charging Infrastructure and Energy Management

This paper presents the development of a hardware testbed for DC-distributed high-power charging (HPC) stations. As DC distributed solutions emerge as a viable solution to optimize HPC site operations, challenges such as interoperability, protection, and seamless integration of distributed energy resources (DER) persist. These issues underscore the need for a robust testing facility to investigate compliance of available commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) market devices. The developed testbed features a DC-distributed charging hub including a charger, emulated energy storage system (ESS), and site level communication and controller implementation. It facilitates the testing of COTS hardware, charger prototypes, standards validation and site energy management system (SEMS) controllers at rated power. This paper details the development of the charging infrastructure platform, implementation of communication system, validation of different SEMS algorithms, and understanding improvements required for future expansion. Using the developed testbed, interoperability gaps for SEMS implementation with multi-vehicle concurrent charging via a multi-port charger are experimentally observed. Aimed at supporting the transition to large-scale EV charging infrastructure deployment and DER integration, this testbed plays a crucial role in conformity testing of COTS device interoperability.

Togiak Heat Recovery Project

Togiak is one of hundreds of Alaskan Native, roadless communities only accessible by boat or plane. This project constructed a heat recovery (HR) system which pipes what was previously wasted heat generated at the power plant to four nearby community buildings. The power plant houses diesel fired generators which provide electricity to the community. This project designed and constructed the system that recovers a portion of the heat produced by the generators and pipes it to the end-user buildings. The heat recovery system integrates with each building’s internal heating system. The objective is to significantly reduce the heating costs in these four community facilities. By reducing the energy use and cost in these community facilities, the local economy is strengthened by keeping the funds inside the community that were formerly used to purchase imported fuel, thereby multiplying the impact of the energy cost reduction. Energy independence is enhanced and energy resilience is increased by reducing dependence on long fuel supply chains which are easily interrupted by unpredictable natural and man-made disasters such as earthquakes, climate change, road rail and sea accidents, etc.
