BRST symmetry and the convolutional double copy

Motivated by the results of Anastasiou et al., we consider the convolutional double copy for BRST and anti-BRST covariant formulations of gravitational and gauge theories in more detail. We give a general BRST and anti-BRST invariant formulation of linearised $\mathcal{N}$ = 0 supergravity using superspace methods and show how this may be obtained from the square of linearised Yang-Mills theories. We demonstrate this relation for the Schwarzschild black hole and the ten-dimensional black string solution as two concrete examples.

Design and analysis of a plasmonic demultiplexer based on band-stop filters using double-nanodisk-shaped resonators

In this paper, a two-channel plasmonic wavelength demultiplexer (PWDM) based on band-stop filters (BSF) using double-nanodisk-shaped resonators is proposed. The structure is numerically simulated using finite difference time domain method. First, a BSF is considered for modeling which supports three modes. Then, the effect of various structural parameters of the proposed PWDM is studied on the transmission properties in detail. The results show that the transmission properties of our PWDM are highly dependent on geometric parameters. The proposed structure provides a single-mode spectrum on each of the output ports with a maximum quality factor as high as 105 (FWHM = 7.7 nm). To this end, we illustrate that the concerning published research in this field, the significant privilege of our proposed PWDM structure is in terms of its good transmission efficiency, lowest FWHM and highest quality factor. Hence, such an arrangement is easy to fabricate and it has the potential for use in all-optical ultra-compact circuits and devices.

In-Situ Visualization of a Growing Brittle Crack in Aluminum Oxynitride Using Synchrotron X-Rays and the Double-Cleavage Drilled Compression Geometry

Brittle fracture is difficult to study in situ due to the speed of a growing crack and the often-catastrophic nature of failure in brittle materials. As a result, the influence of microstructural considerations, such as orientation, grain boundary locations, and strain field, on the crack path remains poorly understood. Presented in this study is a method addressing this knowledge gap, which utilizes the double-cleavage drilled compression geometry to achieve quasi-stable fracture in aluminum oxynitride (AlON). Synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography is used to characterize the crack shape and length, while high-energy diffraction microscopy provides information on the strains, orientations, and shapes of grains in the microstructure surrounding the crack tip. During testing, the crack grew in discrete and irregular jumps while the fracture toughness falls within reported ranges. The crack in AlON is found to have no greater tendency to crack intergranularly as compared to transgranularly, and grains which are cracked transgranularly do not display a trend in orientation or stress when compared to those around which the crack followed a grain boundary. The high resolution of the crack path and microstructural data provides a path forward for modeling and understanding 3D brittle fracture.

Preliminary design of control rods in the single-fluid double-zone thorium molten salt reactor (SD-TMSR)

Recent studies on Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) showed that the excess reactivity at the beginning of the operation is large for many fueling strategies and must be compensated by a reactivity control system. The current work introduces a reliable safety system based on control rods in addition to the online feed system reactivity control in the Single-fluid Double-zone Thorium-based Molten Salt Reactor (SD-TMSR). Three different initial fissile loadings are considered: 233 U, reactor-grade Pu, and transuranic (TRU) elements as a startup fuel. We applied six different absorbing materials to investigate the main operational and safety parameters in the SD-TMSR: natural B 4 C, enriched B 4 C with 90% 10 B, HfB 2 , HfH 1.62 , Eu 2 O 3 , and Gd 2 O 3 . The present work focuses on control rod design, integral and differential control rod worth, shutdown margin, and shadowing effects at steady-state. We employed the SERPENT-2 Monte-Carlo code to calculate the reactivity worth and analyze the performance of the reactivity control system. We showed that 233 U and reactor-grade Pu startup cores maintain adequate shutdown margin with all considered absorbers. Finally, this report proposes a design of control rod clusters that compensate the excess reactivity of the SD-TMSR loaded with different initial fissile material.

Symmetry-breaking in double gyroid block copolymer films by non-affine distortion

Soft-matter bicontinuous networks find a double gyroid structure from block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly. A gyroid structure composed of dissimilar blocks has proven its potential as a soft crystal capable of tuning structural periodicity and symmetry, of which the lattice dimension is variable with molecular weight of the polymer. Using an asymmetric polystyrene- b -poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS- b -PMMA), in this study we show that the self-assembled gyroid films formed via a solvent vapor annealing (SVA) process undergo unique structural distortion due to directional deformation immediately upon deswelling. During the SVA process with PS- b -PMMA films, transient cylinders developed from the as-cast morphology transform into a cubic gyroid structure in a swollen state. Rapid and spontaneous deswelling processes -the manners in which the films contract along the z-direction while retaining an enlarged lateral dimension of the cubic form -lead to triclinic gyroid structures with z-directional contraction ratios ( C z ) of 2.5 and 2.0, respectively. Our X-ray analysis reveals that the deswelling process of the swollen gyroid films produces a notable symmetry-breaking in non-affine gyroid structure that elicits several forbidden reflections such as {110} and {200} reflections. For further characterization of the symmetry-breaking, we delineate the structural features of noncubic gyroid films by computing electron-density difference maps assisted with X-ray measurements. Level-set approach is accordingly developed to quantitate the structural characteristics of the maps in terms of inversion symmetry-breaking, suggesting its possible application to optical Weyl photonic crystals.

Insights from machine learning of carbon electrodes for electric double layer capacitors

Recent years have witnessed the broad use of carbon electrodes for electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) because of large surface area, high porosity and low cost. Whereas experimental investigations are mostly focused on the device performance, computational studies have been rarely concerned with electrochemical properties at conditions remote from equilibrium, limiting their direct applications to materials design. Through a comprehensive analysis of extensive experimental data with various machine-learning methods, we report herein quantitative correlations between the structural features of carbon electrodes and the in-operando behavior of EDLCs including energy and power density. Machine learning allows us to identify important characteristics of activated carbons useful to optimize their efficiency in energy storage.

Selective depolymerization of polyolefin copolymer via high-entropy alloy catalyzed pyrolysis in a double-layered ultrafast heating reactor

Chemical recycling of polyolefin copolymers (PCPs) is essential for mitigating plastic pollution, yet achieving selective depolymerization into C 2 –C 3 monomers at high productivity remains challenging. Here, we introduce a double-layered ultrafast heating reactor (DUHR) that integrates Joule heating with a high-entropy alloy (HEA) catalyst composed of near-equimolar Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni. We achieve highly selective depolymerization of PCP into ethylene and propylene, yielding a 70% non-condensable fraction. Significant aromatic fractions form via radical-driven pathways—a behavior distinct from conventional externally heated pyrolyzers—highlighting DUHR's ability to generate reactive species and modulate reaction pathways. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate an effective strategy for chemical recycling of real-world plastic waste for polyolefin circularity and sustainable resource recovery.

Autogenous formation and smart behaviors of nitrite- and nitrate-intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in Portland cement-metakaolin-dolomite blends

In this work, the influence of sodium nitrite (NaNO{sub 2}) and sodium nitrate (NaNO{sub 3}) corrosion inhibitors on the composition, structure, and chloride binding behaviors of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) formed in ternary ordinary Portland cement-metakaolin-dolomite (OPC-MK-DM) systems is studied. The results show that the nitrite and nitrate anions are preferably intercalated in the CaAl LDHs (AFm phases), but not in the MgAl LDHs (hydrotalcite-type phases) due to its limited formation in these ternary cementitious systems cured at ambient temperature. The autogenously formed nitrate- and nitrite-AFm phases are decomposed upon chloride exposure accompanied by Friedel's salts formation, potentially releasing corrosion inhibitive ions to the pore solution in a progressive manner. The NaNO{sub 2} and NaNO{sub 3} incorporation in ternary OPC-MK-DM binders marginally lowers chloride binding capacity but reduces its penetration resistance mainly due to pore coarsening. Nevertheless, a strong linear correlation can be established between the water-soluble and total chloride contents in ternary OPC-MK-DM systems, regardless of OPC replacement level and corrosion inhibitor incorporation.

Isochronous and period-doubling diagrams for symplectic maps of the plane

Symplectic mappings of the plane serve as key models for exploring the fundamental nature of complex behavior in nonlinear systems. Central to this exploration is the effective visualization of stability regimes, which enables the interpretation of how systems evolve under varying conditions. While the area-preserving quadratic Hénon map has received significant theoretical attention, a comprehensive description of its mixed parameter-space dynamics remain lacking. This limitation arises from early attempts to reduce the full two-dimensional phase space to a one-dimensional projection, a simplification that resulted in the loss of important dynamical features. Consequently, there is a clear need for a more thorough understanding of the underlying qualitative aspects. This paper aims to address this gap by revisiting the foundational concepts of reversibility and associated symmetries, first explored in the early works of G.D. Birkhoff. We extend the original framework proposed by Hénon by adding a period-doubling diagram to his isochronous diagram, which allows to represents the system’s bifurcations and the groups of symmetric periodic orbits that emerge in typical bifurcations of the fixed point. A qualitative and quantitative explanation of the main features of the region of parameters with bounded motion is provided, along with the application of this technique to other symplectic mappings, including cases of multiple reversibility. Modern chaos indicators, such as the Reversibility Error Method (REM) and the Generalized Alignment Index (GALI), are employed to distinguish between various dynamical regimes in the mixed space of variables and parameters. These tools prove effective in differentiating regular and chaotic dynamics, as well as in identifying twistless orbits and their associated bifurcations. Additionally, we discuss the application of these methods to real-world problems, such as visualizing dynamic aperture in accelerator physics, where our findings have direct relevance.

W-induced morphological modification of NiFe layered double hydroxides as efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are one of the most efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting due to their nanosheet features and compositional flexibilities. This work explored the impact of W precursor concentration (0 ~ 10 mM) on LDH morphologies and performance in hydrogen production. Using an electrodeposition W-doping process, W-induced NiFe LDHs (NiFeW-LDHs) were in-situ grown on carbon fiber papers for water splitting. A performance peak was found at a W doping of 5 mM with well-aligned nanosheets, which not only boosted the charge transfer ability and gas evolution but also offered more than a four-fold electrochemical surface area increase compared to film-like NiFe hydroxides. The NiFeW-LDHs exhibited remarkable performance compared to NiFe hydroxides, showing decreased overpotentials of 31 mV and 114 mV for the oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) at 10 mA/cm 2 and -10 mA/cm 2 , respectively, in alkaline media. The performance enhancement at 5 mM W-doping was linked to the well-aligned NiFeW-LDH nanosheets; smaller, less-textured nanosheets were observed with lower or higher W precursor concentrations (2.5 mM or >7.5 mM), leading to inferior OER and HER performances. Hence, an appropriate W doping is crucial to generating the morphologies that contribute to the higher performance of NiFeW-LDHs.

Sr 2 Fe 2–X Mo X O 6 double perovskites as electrocatalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane: Effect of B-site stoichiometry

The oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) was investigated using a solid oxide electrocatalytic cell with Sr 2 Fe 2–X Mo X O 6–δ (SFM) double perovskite as the anode electrocatalyst. As shown in the XRD patterns, SFM perovskites maintained their cubic structure upon modifying the B-site ratios of Mo and Fe. Increasing the Mo content of the perovskite structure resulted in a lower water signal intensity at low temperatures in TPR profiles, indicative of moderate oxygen transport through the perovskite structure. Because Mo–O bonds are stronger than Fe–O bonds, the electrical conductivity of SFM perovskites decreased with increasing Mo content. When operated at 100 mA cm –2 , ODHE activity improved four times compared to open circuit voltage, resulting in 16.1% conversion of C 2 H 6 and 83.1% selectivity to C 2 H 4 . It has been demonstrated that oxygen ions provided by perovskite lattices were the key species involved in activating C 2 H 6 based on the in-situ DRIFTS experiments. In conclusion, the SFM perovskite with higher Mo content showed the highest conversion and selectivity due moderate oxygen ion mobility and fast desorption of C 2 H 4 .

Thermodynamic modeling of double azeotropy systems

Azeotropes are boiling liquid mixtures which have identical vapor and liquid compositions. Known as polyazeotropy, azeotropic mixtures may exhibit more than one azeotrope at a given temperature or pressure. While the thermodynamic condition for azeotrope formation in vapor-liquid equilibrium is well established, thermodynamic modeling of mixtures exhibiting polyazeotropy remains challenging and prior modeling studies often failed to satisfactorily correlate the polyazeotropic behavior of associating systems. Based on the association NRTL model, this study presents successful correlation and analysis of double azeotrope formation for three diverse systems: strongly associating methanol + diethylamine binary, weakly associating ammonia + pentafluoroethane binary, and non-associating benzene + hexafluorobenzene binary systems. Furthermore, these systems exhibit polyazeotropic behavior as the temperature increases and approaches their Bancroft points.

Simultaneous Targeting of RSK and AKT Efficiently Inhibits YB-1-Mediated Repair of Ionizing Radiation-Induced DNA Double-Strand Breaks in Breast Cancer Cells

Y-box binding protein 1 (YB-1) overexpression is associated with chemotherapy- and radiation therapy resistance. Ionizing radiation (IR), receptor tyrosine kinase ligands, and mutation in KRAS gene stimulate activation of YB-1. YB-1 accelerates the repair of IR-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK) is the main kinase inducing YB-1 phosphorylation. We investigated the impact of RSK targeting on DSB repair and radiosensitivity.

Parotid Gland Stem Cell Sparing Radiation Therapy for Patients With Head and Neck Cancer: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer frequently leads to salivary gland damage and subsequent xerostomia. The radiation response of the parotid glands of rats, mice, and patients critically depends on dose to parotid gland stem cells, mainly located in the gland's main ducts (stem cell rich [SCR] region). Therefore, this double-blind randomized controlled trial aimed to test the hypothesis that parotid gland stem cell sparing radiation therapy preserves parotid gland function better than currently used whole parotid gland sparing radiation therapy.

Evaluation of longitudinal double-spin asymmetry measurements in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from the proton for the ECCE detector design

The evaluation of the measurement of double-spin asymmetries for charge-separated pions and kaons produced in deep-inelastic scattering from the proton using the ECCE detector design concept is presented, for the combinations of lepton and hadron beam energies of 5 × 41 GeV 2 and 18 × 275 GeV 2 . The study uses unpolarised simulated data that are processed through a full GEANT simulation of the detector. These data are then reweighted at the parton level with DSSV helicity distributions and DSS fragmentation functions, in order to generate the relevant asymmetries, and subsequently analysed. Furthermore, the performed analysis shows that the ECCE detector concept provides the resolution and acceptance, with a broad coverage in kinematic phase space, needed for a robust extraction of asymmetries. This, in turn, allows for a precise extraction of sea-quark helicity distributions.

Investigating radioactive negative ion production via double electron capture

The relative cross sections for radioactive negative ion production via double electron capture have been measured for collisions between a 40 keV projectile beam of uranium-238 and potassium vapor. This was performed at the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at CERN-ISOLDE and is a step towards measuring the electron affinities (EAs) of elements that cannot be efficiently produced in negative ion sources at radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities. This includes short-lived radioactive isotopes that have low production quantities and heavy and superheavy elements that systematically have smaller EAs than work functions of available ion source materials. Negative ions are particularly sensitive to electron–electron correlation effects, which make such studies ideal for benchmarking atomic structure models that go beyond the independent particle model. While the EAs of most light elements have been measured, experimental investigations on heavier elements, namely the actinides, remain scarce due to their radioactive nature and production difficulty. By developing negative ion production by charge exchange, we aim to make these studies feasible at RIB facilities.

Evaluation of analytical performance of double pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the detection of rare earth elements

Double pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) in collinear configuration was demonstrated to enhance the signal intensity of three rare earth elements (REEs), Eu, Gd, Pr, and Y (Yttrium is included because of its similar chemical properties and occurrence in similar deposits as REE). Significant enhancement in spectral signals of all elements was observed with an aid of second laser. Two laser pulses of 1064 nm wavelength were employed in collinear geometry on the Pr 2 O 3 , Eu 2 O 3 , Gd 2 O 3 , and Y 2 O 3 pellets to obtain emission spectra. For selected strong emission lines of Eu and Gd signal enhancement was found to be 3 to 7-fold and that for Y and Pr lines was observed to be 3 to 13-fold compared to single-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SP-LIBS). Role of inter-pulse delay between two pulses in DP-LIBS was found to be very crucial. Furthermore, while comparing selected ionic and neutral lines, ionic lines were found to have larger signal enhancement in DP-LIBS at the experimental conditions used in this study.

Exclusive double quarkonium production and generalized TMDs of gluons

Being the “mother distributions” of all types of two-parton correlation functions, generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs) have attracted a lot of attention over the last years. We argue that exclusive double production of pseudoscalar quarkonia (η c or η b ) in nucleon-nucleon collisions gives access to GTMDs of gluons.
