A Framework for Optimization-Based ISRU Tool Design Using Discrete Element Modeling

Novel robotic excavation technologies are needed to perform in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) tasks at levels required to sustain a long-term presence on the lunar surface. Developing and testing multiple iterations of functional hardware is time and cost prohibitive, thus slowing down the pace of progress and delaying humanity’s settlement of the Moon. High-fidelity, physics-based simulation can reduce the time and effort required to develop and deploy robotic systems [1]. We have adopted this approach to create high-fidelity models of robotic test hardware to enable rapid virtual design and optimization of excavation technologies [2]. Such models can leverage modern computational tools like Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations that can be coupled with automated design approaches like topology optimization to reduce the amount of prototyping and physical testing needed to realize useful tools.

Chance-Constrained System Identification of Nonlinear Discrete Systems with Safety and Stability Guarantees

This paper presents a discrete-time nonlinear system identification method while satisfying the stability and safety properties of the system with high probability. An Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is used with a Gaussian assumption on the function reconstruction error. A quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) is developed with probabilistic safety and stability constraints that are only required to be satisfied at sampled points inside the invariant region. The proposed method is validated using two simulation examples: a two degrees-of-freedom (DoF) robot manipulator with constraints on joint angles whose trajectories are guaranteed to remain inside a safe set and on motion trajectories data of a hand-drawn shape.

Uncertainty Estimates for Fitting Zernike Polynomials to Discrete Data

Zernike polynomials are a widely used metric in modern optical analysis. They conveniently represent surfaces as a series of weighted terms corresponding to various optical aberrations. Ideally, each term is independent of others in the series, but Zernike polynomials lose this property when working with sets of discrete data. This gives rise to uncertainty in each polynomial’s actual contribution and affects metrology and simulation estimates of their relative weights. Several factors influencing these estimates are the number and arrangement of sample locations, the method for calculating the weights, and the total number of Zernike terms used in the calculation. Discussed is the uncertainty associated with linear regression using random sampling. Other topics reviewed are complex Zernike polynomials and vector spaces of functions.

System monitors discrete computer inputs

Computer system monitors inputs from checkout devices. The comparing, addressing, and controlling functions are performed in the I/O unit. This leaves the computer main frame free to handle memory, access priority, and interrupt instructions.
