Excitation of sodium D-line radiation in collisions of sodium atoms with internally excited H2, D2 and N2.

Excitation of D-line radiation in collisions of Na atoms with vibrationally excited N2, H2, and D2 was studied in two modulated crossed-beam experiments. In both experiments, the molecular excitation was provided by heating the molecular beam to temperatures which were assumed to give populations corresponding to the Boltzmann distribution. In the first experiment, a total rate coefficient was measured as a function of molecular beam temperature. The second experiment achieved partial separation of internal vs kinetic energy transfer effects by using a velocity-selected molecular beam. The data from both experiments were used to determine parameters for the dependence of the transfer cross section upon the kinetic energy for a given change in the vibrational quantum number. Results indicate that most of the Na excitation energy comes from internal vibrational energy, with the remainder coming from kinetic energy.

Analyzing the thermionic reactor critical experiments

The Thermionic Reactor Critical Experiments (TRCE) consisted of fast spectrum highly enriched U-235 cores reflected by different thicknesses of beryllium or beryllium oxide with a transition zone of stainless steel between the core and reflector. The mixed fast-thermal spectrum at the core reflector interface region poses a difficult neutron transport calculation. Calculations of TRCE using ENDF/B fast spectrum data and GATHER library thermal spectrum data agreed within about 1 percent for the multiplication factor and within 6 to 8 percent for the power peaks. Use of GAM library fast spectrum data yielded larger deviations. The results were obtained from DOT R Theta calculations with leakage cross sections, by region and by group, extracted from DOT RZ calculations. Delineation of the power peaks required extraordinarily fine mesh size at the core reflector interface.

Depolarization effects in the active remote sensing of random media

Backscattering cross sections for depolarization are derived for the active remote sensing of a two-layer random medium. It is shown that the depolarization effects arise as a second-order term in albedo under the Born approximation. The results of the backscattering cross sections are illustrated as functions of frequency and incident angles and used to match experimental data collected from a vegetation field.

Elastic scattering and vibrational excitation of CO2 by 4, 10, 20 and 50 eV electrons

Elastic and vibrationally inelastic differential, integral and momentum-transfer cross sections for electrons scattered by CO2 molecules are reported at 4, 10, 20 and 50 eV impact energies. The elastic cross sections are placed on an absolute scale by means of a relative flow technique. The inelastic cross sections are normalised to the elastic ones by using the inelastic to elastic intensity ratios. Data are reported for up to ten features in the 0.0 to 0.4 eV energy-loss region.

Abundance of cosmic-ray elements from sulfur to nickel as a function of atmospheric depth

The measured elemental composition of cosmic rays with charge Z from 16-28 as a function of atmospheric depth was compared with a propagation calculation including energy loss. The resulting composition at the top of the atmosphere has better precision than previously possible on balloon borne experiments, and agrees well with the only satellite data available in this charge range. The extrapolation method also provides checks on assumed cross-sections for interactions of cosmic rays in air.

Effects of volute geometry and impeller orbit on the hydraulic performance of a centrifugal pump

Overall performance data was taken for a Plexiglas water pump with a logarithmic spiral volute and rectangular cross sectioned flow channels. Parametric studies were made in which the center of the impeller was offset from the design center of the volute. The rig was also designed such that the impeller was allowed to synchronously orbit by a fixed amount about any center. The studies indicate that decreasing the tongue clearance decreases the head at low flowrates and increases the head at high flowrates. Also, decreasing the volute area in the first half of the volute and holding the tongue clearance the same, resulted in a decreased head for low flowrates but performance at high flowrates was not affected. Finally, the overall hydraulic performance was not affected by the impeller orbitting about the volute center.

Differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections for elastic electron scattering by neon - 5 to 100 eV

Relative elastic-scattering differential cross sections were measured in the 5-100-eV impact energy and 10-145 deg angular ranges. Normalization of these cross sections was achieved by utilizing accurate total electron-scattering cross sections. A phase-shift analysis of the angular distributions in terms of real phase shifts has been carried out. From the differential cross sections, momentum-transfer cross sections were obtained and the values of the critical energy and angle were established (associated with the lowest value of the differential cross section) as 62.5 + or - 2.5 eV and 101.7 deg + or - 1.5 deg, respectively. The present phase shifts, the critical parameters, and differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections are compared to previous experimental and theoretical results. The error associated with the present data is about 10 percent.

A sudden warming in the middle atmosphere of the southern hemisphere

The present analysis of a wave-mean flow interaction, or minor warming, near the southern hemisphere stratopause on July 15-30, 1974, is primarily based on data from the selective chopper radiometer aboard Nimbus 5. Eliassen-Palm (E-P) cross sections are given for the event, and a good correlation is found between the E-P flux convergence and the deceleration. The channeling of the E-P fluxes from the tropopause to the convergent region is in broad agreement with the refractive index distribution, but a region of E-P flux divergence is noted at high levels in polar latitudes which suggests a source of wave activity. The event is shown to be associated with an incursion of low latitude air into middle latitudes, with a corresponding, irreversible mixing of potential vorticity which resembles the McIntyre and Palmer (1983) northern hemisphere 'wave breaking'.

Characterization of microcomposite polyimide films

Thermally stable microcomposite polyimide films were prepared by the homogeneous incorporation of either a soluble metal salt or a metal complex into a poly(amide-acid)/N,N-dimethylacetamide solution. The thermal processing of films solvent cast onto glass substrates and cured in an appropriate atmosphere yields films containing not only a fairly uniform dispersion of submicrometer particles, but also a new surface layer of metal or metal oxide. These polymeric systems have been characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy with depth profiling via argon ion etching, transmission electron microscopy of ultramicrotomed cross-sections, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis, thermal analysis, and variable temperature electrical resistivity determinations. The data from these techniques were used cooperatively to develop a model for these microcomposite polyimide films.

Nonprincipal plane scattering of flat plates and pattern control of horn antennas

Using the geometrical theory of diffraction, the traditional method of high frequency scattering analysis, the prediction of the radar cross section of a perfectly conducting, flat, rectangular plate is limited to principal planes. Part A of this report predicts the radar cross section in nonprincipal planes using the method of equivalent currents. This technique is based on an asymptotic end-point reduction of the surface radiation integrals for an infinite wedge and enables nonprincipal plane prediction. The predicted radar cross sections for both horizontal and vertical polarizations are compared to moment method results and experimental data from Arizona State University's anechoic chamber. In part B, a variational calculus approach to the pattern control of the horn antenna is outlined. The approach starts with the optimization of the aperture field distribution so that the control of the radiation pattern in a range of directions can be realized. A control functional is thus formulated. Next, a spectral analysis method is introduced to solve for the eigenfunctions from the extremal condition of the formulated functional. Solutions to the optimized aperture field distribution are then obtained.

Calibration approach to electron probe microanalysis: A study with PWA-1480, a nickel base superalloy

The utility of an indirect calibration approach in electron probe microanalysis is explored. The methodology developed is based on establishing a functional relationship between the uncorrected k-ratios and the corresponding concentrations obtained using one of the ZAF correction schemes, for all the desired elements in the concentration range of interest. In cases where a very large number of analyses are desired, such a technique significantly reduces the total time required for the microprobe analysis without any significant loss of precision in the data. A typical application of the method in the concentration mapping of the transverse cross-section of a dendrite in directionally solidified PWA-1480, a nickel-based superalloy, is described.

An overview af SAGE I and II ozone measurements

The stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiments (SAGE) I and II measure Mie, Rayleigh, and gaseous extinction profiles using the solar occultation technique. These global measurements yield ozone profiles with a vertical resolution of 1 km which have been routinely obtained for the periods from February 1979 to November 1981 (SAGE I) and October 1984 to the present (SAGE II). The long-term periodic behavior of the measured ozone is presented as well as case studies of the observed short-term spatial and temporal variability. A linear regression shows annual, semiannual, and quasi-biennial oscillation features at various altitudes and latitudes which, in general, agree with past work. Also, ozone, aerosol, and water vapor data are described for the Antarctic springtime, showing large variation relative to the vortex. Cross-sections in latitude and altitude and polar plots at various altitudes clearly delineate the ozone hole vertically and areally.

Dynamic characteristics of specialty composite structures with embedded damping layers

Damping mechanics for simulating the damped dynamic characteristics in specialty composite structures with compliant interlaminar damping layers are presented. Finite-element based mechanics incorporating a discrete layer (or layer-wise) laminate damping theory are utilized to represent general laminate configurations in terms of lay-up and fiber orientation angles, cross-sectional thickness, shape, and boundary conditions. Evaluations of the method with exact solutions and experimental data illustrate the accuracy of the method. Additional applications investigate the potential for significant damping enhancement in angle-ply composite laminates with cocured interlaminar damping layers.

Generic results of the space physics community survey

This report summarizes the results of a survey of the members of the space physics research community conducted in 1990-1991 to ascertain demographic information on the respondents and information on their views on a number of facets of their space physics research. The survey was conducted by questionnaire and the information received was compiled in a database and analyzed statistically. The statistical results are presented for the respondent population as a whole and by four different respondent cross sections: individual disciplines of space physics, type of employers, age groups, and research techniques employed. Data from a brief corresponding survey of the graduate students of respondents are also included.

Computational study of generic hypersonic vehicle flow fields

The geometric data of the generic hypersonic vehicle configuration included body definitions and preliminary grids for the forebody (nose cone excluded), midsection (propulsion system excluded), and afterbody sections. This data was to be augmented by the nose section geometry (blunt conical section mated with the noncircular cross section of the forebody initial plane) along with a grid and a detailed supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) geometry (inlet and combustor) which should be merged with the nozzle portion of the afterbody geometry. The solutions were to be obtained by using a Navier-Stokes (NS) code such as TUFF for the nose portion, a parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) solver such as the UPS and STUFF codes for the forebody, a NS solver with finite rate hydrogen-air chemistry capability such as TUFF and SPARK for the scramjet and a suitable solver (NS or PNS) for the afterbody and external nozzle flows. The numerical simulation of the hypersonic propulsion system for the generic hypersonic vehicle is the major focus of this entire work. Supersonic combustion ramjet is such a propulsion system, hence the main thrust of the present task has been to establish a solution procedure for the scramjet flow. The scramjet flow is compressible, turbulent, and reacting. The fuel used is hydrogen and the combustion process proceeds at a finite rate. As a result, the solution procedure must be capable of addressing such flows.

A High Spectral Resolution Lidar Based on Absorption Filter

A High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) that uses an iodine absorption filter and a tunable, narrow bandwidth Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. The iodine absorption filter provides better performance than the Fabry-Perot etalon that it replaces. This study presents an instrument design that can be used a the basis for a design of a simple and robust lidar for the measurement of the optical properties of the atmosphere. The HSRL provides calibrated measurements of the optical properties of the atmospheric aerosols. These observations include measurements of aerosol backscatter cross sections, optical depth, backscatter phase function depolarization, and multiple scattering. The errors in the HSRL data are discussed and the effects of different errors on the measured optical parameters are shown.

Middle UV to Near-IR Spectrum of Electron-Excited SO2

We investigated the electron impact-induced fluorescence spectrum of SO2 to provide excitation cross sections for modeling Io's mission spectrum and analyzing Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem observations. The electron-excited middle-ultraviolet visible optical near-infrared (VOIR) emission spectrum of SO2 gas was generated in the laboratory and studied from 2000 to 11,000 A at a resolution of (Delta)(lamda) approximately 2.5 A full width at half maximum (FWHM). The VOIR laboratory spectrum longward of 6000 A consists entirely of S I, II and O I, II multiplets for electron impact energies above approximately 15 eV. Between 2000 and 6000 A, we find previously identified molecular bands from both SO and SO2. This work represents a significant improvement in spectral resolution over our earlier work done at 18 A FWHM. From a measurement of the medium-resolution spectrum, we provide detailed 25- and 100-eV emission cross sections for spectral features from 2000 to 11,000 A . On the basis of these data, we suggest future ground-based and satellite telescopic observations in the VOIR that are of promise for understanding Io's atmosphere.
