Evaluating the Impact of Tritium Permeation Membrane Performance and Direct Internal Recycling on Fusion Fuel Cycle Efficiency Using TMAP8

An efficient fuel cycle is vital to sustainable and cost-effective energy generation in fusion systems. Since tritium is not widely available, fusion systems must breed their own tritium for sustainable fusion deuterium-tritium reactions. An inefficient fuel cycle increases the tritium inventory needed for operations, which increases costs, constraints on tritium management systems, and safety concerns. A fuel cycle model is a powerful tool for understanding tritium inventories and flow rates across all systems in the fuel cycle. By simplifying the technical details into time-dependent tritium flow rates and inventories, the model can simulate the entire fuel cycle with high computational efficiency, even for technologies that are still under development. It can therefore quantify the impact of new tritium management technologies on fuel cycle efficiency. To evaluate the impact of key components on reducing tritium inventory, we are using and expanding an existing fuel cycle models based on latest advancements in fuel cycle research. The new model integrates Tritium Permeation Membrane (TPM) and Direct Internal Recycling (DIR) to enhance tritium transport from blanket breeders and plasma exhaust. These fuel cycle models are implemented in TMAP8 (Tritium Migration Analysis Program, version 8), a MOOSE-based open-source application designed to provide cutting-edge capabilities for tritium transport and fuel cycle modeling. The study aims to demonstrate the extensibility of existing fuel cycle modeling capability in TMAP8 and to offer a proof-of-principle design for future fusion plant systems. The presentation will cover the performance of fuel cycle modeling capabilities available in TMAP8, highlight advancements in fuel cycle research, and present a sensitivity analysis of these models. The results underline potential approaches and technology solutions to lower tritium inventory requirements, highlighting their role in shaping the future of fusion energy.

In situ Detection of Plasma Induced Surface Interaction based on Deep Learning based Visual Diagnostics (Technical Report)

It is characteristic for many plasma devices to undergo plasma-material interaction leading to surface erosion. These processes, often not easily detectable, lead to changes in device performance and lifespan. State-of-the-art lifetime tests and wear experiments require over 1000s hours. A self-consistent model for accurately predicting the erosion's effects is not available. In situ detection of these processes is not a trivial task since the surface variations at the early stages have a micron scale. Such limitations not only restrict testing and prediction capabilities but also slow the development of new thrusters and limit mission duration. To address these challenges, an in-situ diagnostic for real-time erosion assessment has been developed, aiming to expedite lifetime testing and broaden experimental campaigns. Several works were dedicated to real-time and in situ monitoring of material erosion during plasma exposure using laser holography, microscopy, and with telemicroscopes. However, the applicability of these approaches is limited due to complexity, cost and less flexibility as they often require placing diagnostic equipment inside the vacuum chamber. In collaboration with Princeton Collaborative Research Facility (PCRF), Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), a new diagnostic approach is developed, where geometry modifications to the ceramic channel walls were introduced that would result in accelerated channel erosion. We employed Long-distance microscope (LDM) imagery, combined with Deep-Learning based Shape from focus or depth from focus (DFF or SFF) approach, that provides an accessible and cost-effective solution. LDM employs focus variation techniques to continuously capture multiple images of the target object at distinct focal planes. DFF, an optical focus variation method, generates a 3D topographical surface depth map from a sequence of variably focused images. Combined with the developed diagnostic, this approach offers a controllable means to study erosion under accelerated conditions. In this work, we develop Neural Network-based DFF algorithm applicable for LDM data to quantitatively evaluate plasma induced surface modification from LDM data. Next, we develop Deep Learning-based super-resolution depth map image reconstruction technique to increase the resolution of depth maps obtained from DFF algorithm to improve the accuracy of erosion measurements. Thirdly, we develop several image processing techniques to remove noise and improve the quality of depth map image. Here we report the results of initial tests for this approach. An experimental setup designed and built in PPPL was employed that consists of a 3-cm gridded ion source that produces a neutralized argon beam with energies up to 600 eV. A hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) ceramic target, designed based on computational predictions, was used. Tests were conducted to reconstruct the complex geometry of the target under the lighting conditions of the operated ion source.

Tool-Based Case Studies on Strategic Deployment of Untapped Micro-Pumped Hydro Storage in Michigan

With most classical hydropower sites already utilized and the global push for rapid integration of renewable energy sources accelerating, there is a critical need to identify alternative energy storage solutions. Pumped hydro energy storage, which accounts for the vast majority of global grid-scale storage, remains one of the most cost-effective and long-duration storage technologies available. Hence, this study presents a novel tool designed to assess the untapped potential of inland lakes and reservoirs for micro-PSH, using Michigan’s relatively flat landscape as a case study due to its extensive but underutilized water infrastructure. To ensure accuracy and reliability, the tool incorporates extensive data gathered from authorized sources, covering more than 420 water facilities and potential reservoirs in the state. The tool evaluates key parameters such as horizontal and vertical distances, volume, and the total storage capacity of each reservoir. Its robust assessment framework integrates these metrics to evaluate each site’s potential. The tool’s intuitive interface and geospatial visualizations support actionable insights for planners and scalable deployment of distributed storage infrastructure.

Robust Multi-fidelity Bayesian Optimization with Deep Kernel and Partition

Multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization (MFBO) is a powerful approach that utilizes lowfidelity, cost-effective sources to expedite the exploration and exploitation of a high-fidelity objective function. Existing MFBO methods with theoretical foundations either lack justification for performance improvements over single-fidelity optimization or rely on strong assumptions about the relationships between fidelity sources to construct surrogate models and direct queries to low-fidelity sources. To mitigate the dependency on cross-fidelity assumptions while maintaining the advantages of low-fidelity queries, we introduce a random sampling and partition-based MFBO framework with deep kernel learning. This framework is robust to cross-fidelity model misspecification and explicitly illustrates the benefits of low-fidelity queries. Our results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm effectively manages complex cross-fidelity relationships and efficiently optimizes the target fidelity function.

A comparison of plastic and visco-plastic constitutive models for accurate predictions in PM-HIP

Powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP) is an advanced manufacturing process that can efficiently produce near net shape parts with high material utilization and uniform microstructures. While the PM-HIP process is used frequently to produce small-scale components, its application to large-scale components is still limited due to inadequate understanding of its complex processes that cause unpredictable post-HIP shape distortions. A computational model can be a cost-effective alternative to exhaustive experimentation required to understand the PM-HIP process fully. Therefore, we present a comparison of plastic and visco-plastic models that are frequently used to model the PM-HIP process. We show that the predictions of powder densification behavior and shape distortions obtained from both the models are similar under most conditions and agree well with experimental observations.

Residential Home Decarbonization Using Advanced Micro-CHP

An efficient micro-combined heat and power (CHP) prototype was developed to provide heat and electricity for single-family homes and light commercial buildings. The unit can be installed independently at the point of energy consumption. Consequently, it enables cost-effectively and flexibly matching heat and electrical loads, simplifying distribution and installation processes, and recovering and storing waste heat as hot water. The analyzed results show that the micro-CHP using natural gas as fuel achieves 10.68%–32.80% CO2 reduction in the selected five home applications. The potential effect of H2 on decarbonization of these home was also evaluated, finding that the micro-CHP using a blended fuel with H2 and natural gas can further reduce CO2 emissions. However, the 50% CO2 reduction in the micro-CHP requires at least 70%–90% of H2 in the blend with natural gas. Overall, the micro-CHP technology demonstrates a solid potential to accelerate micro-CHP adoption in residential and light commercial markets, thereby promoting broader micro-CHP acceptance and use in the future for building decarbonization.

Hierarchical Resilience Planning for Networked Microgrids: A Case Study of Puerto Rico

Microgrids can be designed to enhance the energy resilience of communities and critical infrastructures, such as hospitals, data centers, and communication networks, which are vulnerable to frequent weather-related disruption. Coordinating multiple microgrids in a network can leverage the geographical diversity of load and generation resources while enabling resilient and cost-effective planning of the distribution system. Designing a networked microgrid is complex, involving intricate technical assessment, cost-benefit analysis, site-specific requirements, and the evaluation of existing resources. Therefore, this paper proposes a hierarchical resilience planning framework and performs an extensive techno-economic analysis for the design of a networked microgrid. Hierarchical resilience planning involves technology sizing at an individual community level to meet the critical load and satisfy resilience criteria, and resource optimization at networked microgrid level to provide a higher level of resilience and energy adequacy. A real-world case of Puerto Rico's cooperative microgrid “Microrred de la Montaña” is investigated considering localized electricity tariffs, site-specific demand profiles, solar generation, and existing hydro resources. Multiple optimization scenarios are developed based on the resiliency requirement to estimate the capacity of solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage (BES) to be installed at each substation. The results provide the optimal sizing for individual community and networked microgrid to withstand 1day and 3-day outages along with the criteria for critical load.

Cost-Benefit Assessment of Additive Manufacturing for Injection Molds

This report presents an additive-manufacturing (AM) technology, where AM Cyclic Olefin Resin (COR) molds would be used for injection molding. The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) team has focused on the costs and economics of this developing technology. This report presents a cost-benefit analysis of using the polySpectra AM COR molds made of COR, at the start of the project (Present') and the potential lifetime, cost-effectiveness, and performance by the end of the project period (Period 3'). The analysis of the AM COR molds is compared to traditional Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machined aluminum molds across the time periods. A cost-benefit model framework has been developed to evaluate AM COR molds. This model accounts for mold delivery to customers, current and future levels of technology readiness, the type of material injected, and various business cases. AM COR molds offer a major advantage in lead time, reducing production setup from weeks or months (with CNC machining) to as little as two to five days. This enables faster prototyping, quicker design cycles, and accelerated time-to-market, critical in industries like electronics, aerospace, medical devices, and automotive. Even modest improvements in the durability of polySpectra AM COR molds show the potential for these molds to complement traditional tooling. With further development, AM COR mold technology could provide significant time and cost savings while supporting increased domestic manufacturing capacity.
