Use of Traveling Wave Signatures in Medium-Voltage Distribution Systems for Fault Detection and Location

Protection systems are a critical feature for the proper operation of a power grid. Protection systems should be able to quickly detect, identify, locate, and isolate the faults within a time frame that prevents damage to grid components and reduces customer outages. As more inverter-based photovoltaics (PV) are integrated into the grid, phasor domain based protection schemes become more inaccurate due to low levels of fault current from inverters or respond too slowly to accurately identify fault conditions. This points to the need to identify and develop novel protection approaches for distribution systems with high penetration of inverter based PV. The main objective of the project is to develop new time domain-based protection schemes to enable more accurate and faster detection, identification and location of faults in distribution systems and/or microgrids with high penetration of inverter-based PV. Our approach aims to exploit the traveling waves that are generated during a fault or other disturbances in the grid.

Collection of Aerosol Particles in a Single-Stage, High Gradient Magnetic Collector

The collection of aerosol particles that have magnetic components such as actinides, Co/Ni/Fe, brass, and alloys are of interest in the nuclear industry and for regulatory applications. The collection of these particles is important for monitoring and a number of collection approaches have been developed based on separations mechanisms including size, mass, electrical or thermal properties. In this work, we present the performance of a single-stage, high gradient magnetic collector with a nickel foam matrix for removing airborne magnetic particles. The collection efficiencies for two different particle size regimes and compositions (NaCl and Fe 3 O 4 below 200 nm and SiO 2 and Fe 3 O 4 at 1-2 μm) were measured to assess the performance of the magnetic collector. The high gradient magnetic collector did not remove nanosized magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles any more effectively than non-magnetic NaCl particles. However, in the larger size range, the collector more efficiently removed Fe 3 O 4 particles compared to SiO 2 with a collection efficiency of 99% compared to 84% for SiO 2 . The removal mechanism could be attributed to both filtration and the high gradient magnetic field.

Assessment of Regional Interconnections to Meet Southeast Asia's Renewable Energy Targets: Phase I of the Singapore – U.S. Collaboration

This report summarizes the results of a study of long-distance subsea electrical interconnections in Southeast Asia, conducted under the first phase of the Singapore-U.S. collaboration under the Net Zero World Initiative. In Phase 1, the Net Zero World team evaluated the current state of the renewable energy landscape in Southeast Asia; developed an open-source capacity expansion model using GridPath and evaluated several future scenarios including changes in interregional transmission; explored the technical feasibility of regional subsea interconnectors; and estimated socio-economic benefits of expanded regional transmission.
