Utilization of alternative fuels in diesel engines

Performance and emission data are collected for various candidate alternate fuels and compare these data to that for a certified petroleum based number two Diesel fuel oil. Results for methanol, ethanol, four vegetable oils, two shale derived oils, and two coal derived oils are reported. Alcohol fumigation does not appear to be a practical method for utilizing low combustion quality fuels in a Diesel engine. Alcohol fumigation enhances the bioactivity of the emitted exhaust particles. While it is possible to inject many synthetic fuels using the engine stock injection system, wholly acceptable performance is only obtained from a fuel whose specifications closely approach those of a finished petroleum based Diesel oil. This is illustrated by the contrast between the poor performance of the unupgraded coal derived fuel blends and the very good performance of the fully refined shale derived fuel.

User alternatives in post-processing for raster-to-vector conversion

A number of Landsat-based coniferous forest stratum maps have been created of the Eldorado National Forest in California. These maps were produced in raster image format which is not directly usable by the U.S. Forest Service's vector-based Wildland Resource Information System (WRIS). As a solution, raster-to-vector conversion software has been developed for processing classified images into polygonal data structures. Before conversion, however, the digital classification images must be simplified to remove high spatial variance ('noise', 'speckle') and meet a USFS ten acre minimum requirement. A post-processing (simplification) strategy different from those commonly used in raster image processing may be desired for preparing maps for conversion to vector format, because simplification routines typically permit diagonal connections in the process of reclassifying pixels and forming new polygons. Diagonal connections are often undesirable when converting to vector format because they permit polygons to effectively cross over each other and occupy a common location. Three alternative methodologies are discussed for simplifying raster data for conversion to vector format.

The Space Telescope alternate fine guidance sensor

A study was conducted to develop a preliminary design for an alternate fine guidance sensor system for retrofit on the NASA Space Telescope. An electrostatically focused quadrant array detector was proposed for this application. Configuration studies verified the feasibility of using this sensor in the existing fine guidance system and within the given limits on mass, power, volume, processor capability, and thermal dissipation. Space Telescope control system simulations showed the proposed system to meet the required performance specifications and to be substantially more resistant to external disturbances than the baseline system.

Alternative gravity-assist sequences for the ISEE-3 escape trajectory

The International Sun-Earth Explorer-3 (ISEE-3) was moved from its mission halo orbit upstream of the earth's magnetosphere on June 10, 1982. Multiple lunar swingby maneuvers were then used to shape the trajectory for extensive exploration of the distant geomagnetic tail and finally to place the spacecraft on a course that will intercept the comet Giacobini-Zinner on September 11, 1985. With this new mission objective, the spacecraft was renamed the International Cometary Explorer (ICE). A double-lunar-swingby control technique involving five passes by the moon was eventually implemented to accomplish this, but in the process of finding this solution several feasible, though less optimal, alternative trajectory sequences implementing the same procedure were discovered. This paper provides a descriptive comparison of these very different orbital profiles and serves to illustrate the utility and great flexibility of this orbital control procedure. Targeting methodology for finding constrained solutions in this space is also presented.

An alternative to reduction of surface pressure to sea level

The pitfalls of the present method of reducing surface pressure to sea level are reviewed, and an alternative, adjusted pressure, P, is proposed. P is obtained from solution of a Poisson equation over a continental region, using the simplest boundary condition along the perimeter or coastline where P equals the sea level pressure. The use of P would avoid the empiricisms and disadvantages of pressure reduction to sea level, and would produce surface pressure charts which depict the true geostrophic wind at the surface.

The B2 aluminides as alternative materials

The potential of the B2 aluminides as structural material alternatives for the strategic element containing superalloys currently used in gas turbine engines is being explored with emphasis on the equiatomic Fe and Ni aluminides. Although Co is a strategic material, the equiatomic Co aluminide is also being studied to gain a more complete understanding of these fourth period intermetallics. Research focuses on initial processing techniques such as ingot melting, power metallurgy, and rapid solidification with and without additional thermomechanical processing; high temperature deformation - primarily compressive creep; compositional effects within the binary B2 aluminides; third-element alloying addition effects on high temperature strength and oxidation resistance, and near room temperature ductility as influenced by processing, alloying, and grain size. Various programs now underway are reviewed and some highlights of research results are presented.

Alternative approximation concepts for space frame synthesis

A structural synthesis methodology for the minimum mass design of 3-dimensionall frame-truss structures under multiple static loading conditions and subject to limits on displacements, rotations, stresses, local buckling, and element cross-sectional dimensions is presented. A variety of approximation concept options are employed to yield near optimum designs after no more than 10 structural analyses. Available options include: (A) formulation of the nonlinear mathematcal programming problem in either reciprocal section property (RSP) or cross-sectional dimension (CSD) space; (B) two alternative approximate problem structures in each design space; and (C) three distinct assumptions about element end-force variations. Fixed element, design element linking, and temporary constraint deletion features are also included. The solution of each approximate problem, in either its primal or dual form, is obtained using CONMIN, a feasible directions program. The frame-truss synthesis methodology is implemented in the COMPASS computer program and is used to solve a variety of problems. These problems were chosen so that, in addition to exercising the various approximation concepts options, the results could be compared with previously published work.

The use of hydrazine as an alternate source of energy

The potentials of using hydrazine as an alternative source of energy was studied. Three chemical reactions are considered: oxidation with air, oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, and thermocatalytic decomposition. Performance data of gasoline, ethylic alcohol, and propane are compared. An item about the NO(x) emissions by the various investigated reactions is included. Promising results are shown, mainly those regarding the available energy per unit volume of unburned gases (vaporized fuel and oxidizer).

The Alternating Surface Segmented Lap Joint: a Design for Thin Highly Loaded Joints

The combination of thin airfoil sections and high aerodynamic loads on many wind tunnel models presents a major problem for attachment of flap elements. Conventional methods of attaching fixed control elements such as lap and tongue-in-groove joints are not rigid enough to provide surface continuity required in high Reynolds number research. For the extreme cases, the solution has been to fabricate separate wings for each flap setting with the flap element being and integral part of the wing. Here an attractive solution to this problem, the alternating surface segmented lap joint, is discussed. This joint provides increased rigidity and lower stress levels than conventional joints. Additionally, attachment fastener loading is low and the joint can be designed to accommodate high shear levels due to bending without the use of dowel pins.

An alternative multi-mode SAR for RADARSAT

The RADARSAT project was asked by the Canadian government in the spring of 1986 to design for reduced costs and increased radar performance as compared to the well-known baseline design. Both the Project Office and Canadian industry (lead by SPAR Aerospace of Montreal) have undertaken to meet this request, with a proposal to cabinet to be submitted in the fall of 1986. One alternative SAR concept is outlined which is under consideration for a revised RADARSAT configuration. The radar system described uses two frequencies (C&L band) over four possible modes: near range swath; far range swath; wide swath; and high resolution. Good sensitivity, resolution, and coverage are obtained with modest power and data rates. The antenna systems are relatively simple. Indeed, no break-through technological developments are needed. The design allows several mode combinations for simultaneous data collection or performance enhancement. The principal parameters are described. A nominal mean altitude of 700 km is assumed.
