A fluctuation-induced plasma transport diagnostic based upon fast-Fourier transform spectral analysis

A diagnostic, based on fast Fourier-transform spectral analysis techniques, that provides experimental insight into the relationship between the experimentally observable spectral characteristics of the fluctuations and the fluctuation-induced plasma transport is described. The model upon which the diagnostic technique is based and its experimental implementation is discussed. Some characteristic results obtained during the course of an experimental study of fluctuation-induced transport in the electric field dominated NASA Lewis bumpy torus plasma are presented.

Design of space-type electronic power transformers

Both open and encapsulated varieties of high reliability, low weight, and high efficiency moderate and high voltage transformers were investigated to determine the advantages and limitations of their construction in the ranges of power and voltage required for operation in the hard vacuum environment of space. Topics covered include: (1) selection of the core material; (2) preliminary calculation of core dimensions; (3) selection of insulating materials including magnet wire insulation, coil forms, and layer and interwinding insulation; (4) coil design; (5) calculation of copper losses, core losses and efficiency; (6) calculation of temperature rise; and (7) optimization of design with changes in core selection or coil design as required to meet specifications.

Fourier and Hadamard transform spectrometers - A limited comparison. II

A mathematical approach was used to compare interferometric spectrometers and Hadamard transform spectrometers. The principle results are reported, noting that the simple Hadamard spectrometer encodes more efficiently than a Michelson interferometer which, in turn, encodes less efficiently than is usually acknowledged. Hirschfeld's (1977) major objections to these findings are discussed, although it is noted that none of his objections is supported by evidence.

Balloon-borne transform spectroscopy

The design and construction of a high-resolution far-infrared Fourier-transform spectrometer for use on the Smithsonian balloon-borne one-meter telescope is described. The instrument will operate at a resolution of about 0.1 kayser in the region from 25 to 150 microns. It will be used to obtain spectra of Jupiter, Venus, Orion, and other H II and molecular cloud regions, as well as the terrestrial stratosphere.

Time transformations and Cowell's method

The precise numerical integration of Cowell's equations of satellite motion is frequently performed with an independent variable s defined by an equation of the form dt = cr to the n-th power ds, where t represents time, r the radial distance from the center of attraction, c is a constant, and n is a parameter. This has been primarily motivated by the 'uniformizing' effects of such a transformation resulting in desirable 'analytic' stepsize control for elliptical orbits. This report discusses the 'proper' choice of the parameter n defining the independent variable s for various types of orbits and perturbation models, and develops a criterion for its selection.

Systematic errors in Hadamard transform optics

Error sources encountered in Hadamard transform optical instruments are discussed. Such errors are caused by factors including moving masks, incorrect mask alignment, defects in mask fabrication, missing data, drifts in background level, and diffraction. Techniques for error reduction and/or elimination are described for each of the cases considered. It is noted that the errors described occur in singly encoded spectrometers and imagers.

A transform-pair relationship between incident and scattered fields from an arbitrary reflector

It is shown that a transform-pair relationship exists between incident and scattered fields from an infinite, perfectly conducting reflector of arbitrary shape, when the physical optics approximation is applied. As an example of potential applications, this relationship is used to synthesize a reflector feed pattern required to produce a desired far-field pattern from a given paraboloidal reflector.

Fixture for winding transformers

Bench-mounted fixture assists operator in winding toroid-shaped transformer cores. Toroid is rigidly held in place as wires are looped around. Arrangement frees both hands for rapid winding and untangling of wires that occurs when core is hand held.

Rapid testing of pulse transformers

Quality-control testing of pulse transformers is speeded up by method for determining rise time and droop. Instead of using oscilloscope and square-wave generator to measure these characteristics directly, method uses voltmeter and sine-wave generator to measure them indirectly in about one-tenth time. Droop and rise time are determined by measuring input/output voltage ratio at just four frequencies.

Thermal energy transformer

For use in combination with a heat engine, a thermal energy transformer is presented. It is comprised of a flux receiver having a first wall defining therein a radiation absorption cavity for converting solar flux to thermal energy, and a second wall defining an energy transfer wall for the heat engine. There is a heat pipe chamber interposed between the first and second walls having a working fluid disposed within the chamber and a wick lining the chamber for conducting the working fluid from the second wall to the first wall. Thermal energy is transferred from the radiation absorption cavity to the heat engine.

Fast Fourier transform analysis of rotor-bearing systems

Nonlinear transient analysis of rotor-bearing systems is becoming increasingly important in the analysis of modern-day rotating machinery to model such phenomena as oil film whirl. This paper develops an analysis technique incorporating modal analysis and fast Fourier transform techniques to analyze rotors with residual shaft bow and realistic nonlinear bearings. The technique is demonstrated on single-mass and three-mass rotor examples. Comparisons of the theoretical results with experimental data give excellent agreement.

Beta-to-alpha transformation in polycrystalline SiC. II - Interfacial energetics

A phenomenological analysis of the energetics of the beta-to-alpha transformation in polycrystalline SiC is presented. It is found that the extreme anisotropy of the interfacial energy between alpha- and beta-SiC can account for the rapid growth of composite grains into the beta matrix during conventional sintering or hot-pressing processes. The composite grains consist of alpha-SiC plates 'sandwiched' between well-oriented and recrystallized beta-SiC 'envelopes'. The interfaces involving the 111 plane type of beta and (0001) of alpha have much lower energies than random beta/alpha interfaces.

Comparison of video fields and frames for transform compression

Because of the interlaced television scan, the two fields that form an interlaced video frame are generated 1/60 of a second apart. If the two fields are compressed independently, the correlation between adjacent lines is unused. The transmission rate can be reduced by using a field memory to form an interlaced frame. Four test images were processed as fields and as interlaced frames, using both theoretical and experimental compression designs. For comparable mean-square error and subjective appearance, field compression requires about one-half bit per sample more than frame compression. However, the overall transmission rate - the number of bits per image times the number of images per second - is more meaningful than the number of bits per sample. When transform compression at low transmission rates merges the adjacent lines, frame compression becomes similar to field repeating, and the memory can be reduced.

Kinetics of the phase transformation in a Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy as studied by X-ray diffraction

The purpose of the study is to make the T-T-T diagram available and to describe the X-ray diffraction techniques used to determine the fraction of transformed phase in the Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al metastable beta-alloy which decomposes into the hexagonal alpha-phase and the bcc beta-phase of a higher Mo concentration. The sheet material studied for this study is not ideal for an X-ray examination because of both a rolling and annealing texture as well as grain size problems. These difficulties are overcome using special X-ray techniques. Equations are given that indicate the approximations to be accepted if pole figure data are disregarded. Lattice parameter data from the beta phase enables one to obtain an approximate phase diagram.

Producing gapped-ferrite transformer cores

Improved manufacturing techniques make reproducible gaps and minimize cracking. Molded, unfired transformer cores are cut with thin saw and then fired. Hardened semicircular core sections are bonded together, placed in aluminum core box, and fluidized-coated. After winding is run over box, core is potted. Economical method significantly reduces number of rejects.
