Precise β branching-ratio measurement for the 0 + → 0 + superallowed decay of 34 Ar

We have measured the branching ratio for the superallowed 0 + → 0 + β transition from 34 Ar to be 0.9448(8), and determined its ft value to be 3058.1(28) s, a result with ±0.09% precision, which is a factor of three improvement over the previous result based on current world data. The ft-value ratio for the mirror pair of superallowed transitions 34 Ar → 34 Cl and 34 Cl → 34 S, becomes the most precise yet measured and, in a sensitive test of the method used to calculate the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction, δ C , it agrees well with the ratio as calculated with Woods-Saxon radial wave functions. This confirms the method used in the most recent survey of superallowed decays to extract V ud , the up-down quark-mixing element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Additionally, our branching-ratio results for the four observed Gamow-Teller branches to 1 + states in 34 Cl are shown to agree well with shell-model calculations based on the same effective interactions that were used in the determination of δ C .

Superallowed 0 + → 0 + nuclear β decays: 2020 critical survey, with implications for V ud and CKM unitarity

A new critical survey of all half-life, decay-energy and branching-ratio measurements related to 23 superallowed 0 + → 0 + β decays is presented. Included are 222 individual measurements of comparable precision obtained from 174 published references. Compared with our last survey in 2015, we have added results from 28 new publications and eliminated an approximately equal number whose results have been superseded by much more precise modern data. We obtain world-average ft values for each of the 21 transitions that have a complete set of data, then apply radiative and isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to extract “corrected” Ft values. Fifteen of these Ft values now have a precision of 0.3% or better and all take the same value within statistics, as expected from conservation of the vector current. Their average, Ft¯, when combined with the muon lifetime, yields the up-down quark-mixing element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, V ud = 0.97373 ± 0.00031. This is lower than our 2015 result by one standard deviation and its uncertainty is increased by 50%. This is a consequence, not of any shifts in the experimental data, but of new calculations for the radiative corrections. The lower V ud value now leads to greater tension in the top-row test of unitarity in the CKM matrix. Updates in experimental data have independently led to a factor-of-two tighter limit being set on the possible existence of a scalar interaction. In conclusion, the new limit on Fierz interference is b F ≤ 0.0033 at the 90% confidence level.

Resonances of A = 4T = 1 isospin triplet states within the ab initio no-core Gamow shell model

Here, the A = 4 nuclei, i.e., 4 H, 4 He, and 4 Li , establish an interesting isospin T = 1 isobaric system. 4 H and 4 Li are unbound broad resonances, whereas 4 He is deeply bound in its ground state but unbound in all its excited states. The present situation is that experiments so far have not given consistent data on the resonances. Few-body calculations have well studied the scatterings of the 4N systems. In the present work, we provide many-body calculations of the broad resonance structures, in an ab initio framework with modern realistic interactions. It occurs that, indeed, 4 H, 4 Li, and excited 4 He are broad resonances, which is in accordance with experimental observations. The calculations also show that the first 1 - excited state almost degenerates with the 2 - ground state in the pair of mirror isobars of 4 H and 4 Li, which may suggest that the experimental data on energy and width are the mixture of the ground state and the first excited state. The T = 1 isospin triplet formed with an excited state of 4 He and ground states of 4 H and 4 Li is studied, focusing on the effect of isospin symmetry breaking.

Fine structure in the odd-odd proton emitter Tm 144

Axial symmetry breaking in 144 Tm is probed by examining its proton emission fine structure. The ground-state spin and parity in 144 Tm and daughter 143 Er are assigned unambiguously based on the corroboration of our calculations with the present data. Here we establish the first microscopic description of fine structure in odd-odd proton emitters, which is capable of resolving ambiguities present in the assignments of transitions in such nuclei.

Chiral-like doublet band structure and octupole correlations in 104 Ag

The nature of the yrast negative-parity band and its chiral-like partner band in 104 Ag is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Lifetimes of states in the negative-parity yrast band and positive-parity band based on the 4424-keV level are measured using Doppler shift attenuation technique. Lifetimes of three more states have been determined along with the upper limit for the lifetime of the highest observed yrast states. Further, lifetimes known from earlier studies are determined with better precision. The level scheme of 104 Ag has also been extended with the addition of new enhanced E1 transitions linking the positive-parity band based on the 4424-keV levels and the yrast negative-parity and its partner band. B(E1) and/or B(E1)/B(M1) values for the transitions from the positive-parity band to the yrast and its partner band have been determined for the first time; these suggest strong octupole correlation between the positive-parity and the negative-parity bands. Here, calculations based on the triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) and covariant density functional theory (CDFT) have been performed to unravel the intrinsic structures of the partner band and the excited positive-parity band. TPSM calculations predict that doublet bands have significant angular momentum contributions along the three principle axes, suggesting that bands could have chiral symmetry breaking origin. The CDFT calculations predict a π(g 9/2 ) -1 Ⓧν(h 11/2 )(g 7/2 ,d 5/2 ) 2 aligned quasiparticle configuration for the negative-parity doublet bands with deformation parameters β≈0.20 and γ≈5°. The partner band could be interpreted as a chiral vibration mode built on top of the yrast band. The excited positive-parity band is predicted to have aligned four quasiparticle configurations, namely, π(g 9/2 ) -1 Ⓧν(h 11/2 ) 2 (g 7/2 ,d 5/2 ) 1 . Further, these calculations predict significant octupole softness in 104 Ag which could be the reason for enhanced E1 transitions between the four quasiparticle positive-parity bands and the doublet negative-parity bands.

Towards a UV model of kinetic mixing and portal matter

The nature of dark matter (DM) and how it might interact with the particles of the Standard Model (SM) is an ever-growing mystery. It is possible that the existence of new “dark sector” forces, yet undiscovered, are the key to solving this fundamental problem, and one might hope that in the future such forces might even be “unified” with the ones we already know in some UV-complete framework. In this paper, following a bottom-up approach, we attempt to take the first steps in the construction of such a framework. The much-discussed possibility of the kinetic mixing (KM) of the “dark photon” with the hypercharge gauge boson of the SM via loops of portal matter (PM) fields, charged in both sectors, offers an attractive starting point for these efforts. Given the anticipated finite strength of the KM in a UV-complete theory, the absence of anomalies, and the lifetime constraints on the PM fields arising from cosmic microwave background and nucleosynthesis constraints, PM must behave as vector-like copies of the known SM fermion fields, such as those which appear naturally in, e.g., E 6 -type models. Within such a setup, the SM and their corresponding partner PM fields would be related by a new S U ( 2 ) I gauge symmetry. With this observation as a springboard, we construct a generalization of these ideas where S U ( 2 ) I is augmented by an additional U ( 1 ) I Y factor so that the light dark photon is the result of a symmetry breaking analogous to the SM, i.e., S U ( 2 ) I × U ( 1 ) I Y → U ( 1 ) D , but with U ( 1 ) D now also broken at the ≲ GeV scale. While SM fields are U ( 1 ) D singlets, as in the conventional dark photon approach, they transform nontrivially under the full S U ( 2 ) I × U ( 1 ) I Y gauge group. This approach leads to numerous interesting signatures, both at low energies and at colliders, and can be viewed as an initial step in the construction of a more UV-complete framework.

Backgrounds in gravitational effective field theory

Effective field theories describing gravity coupled to matter are investigated, allowing for operators of arbitrary mass dimension. Terms violating local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance while preserving internal gauge symmetries are included. The theoretical framework for violations of local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance and associated conceptual issues are discussed, including transformations in curved and approximately flat spacetimes, the treatment of various types of backgrounds, the implications of symmetry breaking, and the no-go constraints for explicit violation in Riemann geometry. Furthermore, techniques are presented for the construction of effective operators, and the possible terms in the gravity, gauge, fermion, and scalar sectors are classified and enumerated. Explicit expressions are obtained for terms containing operators of mass dimension six or less in the effective action for General Relativity coupled to the Standard Model of particle physics. Special cases considered include Einstein-Maxwell effective field theories and the limit with only scalar coupling constants.

Simulations of axion minihalos

The axion, motivated as a solution to the strong CP problem, is also a viable dark matter candidate. The axion field takes random values in causally disconnected regions if the symmetry breaking that establishes the particle occurs after inflation, leading to white-noise density fluctuations at low wave numbers and forming dense minihalos with sub-planetary masses subsequently. There have been two recent proposals that appear capable of testing this scenario, namely using pulsar timing arrays and studying cosmological microlensing caustics. Motivated by these proposals, we use N-body simulations to study the formation of substructures from white-noise density fluctuations. The density profiles of our relaxed axion minihalos can be described by the Navarro–Frenk–White profile, and the minihalos’ concentration number agrees well with a simple, physically-motivated model. We develop a semi-analytic formula to fit the mass function from our simulation, which agrees broadly at different redshifts and only differs at factor of two level from classic halo mass functions. This analytic mass function allows us to consider uncertainties in the post-inflation axion scenario, as well as extrapolate our high-redshift simulations results to the present. Our work estimates the present-day abundance of axion substructures, as is necessary for predicting their effect on cosmological microlensing caustics and pulsar timing. Our calculations suggest that if pulsar timing and microlensing probes can reach recent sensitivity forecasts, they may be sensitive to the post-inflation axion dark matter scenario, even when accounting for uncertainties pertaining to axion strings. For pulsar timing, the most significant caveat is whether axion minihalos are disrupted by stars, which our estimates show is mildly important at the most relevant masses. In conclusion, as our gravitational simulations are scale invariant, the results can be extended to models where the dark matter is comprised of other axion-like particles and even clusters of primordial black holes.

Numerical fluid dynamics for FRG flow equations: Zero-dimensional QFTs as numerical test cases. I. The O ( N ) model

The functional renormalization group (FRG) approach is a powerful tool for studies of a large variety of systems, ranging from statistical physics over the theory of the strong interaction to gravity. The practical application of this approach relies on the derivation of so-called flow equations, which describe the change of the quantum effective action under the variation of a coarse-graining parameter. In the present work, we discuss in detail a novel approach to solve such flow equations. This approach relies on the fact that RG equations can be rewritten such that they exhibit similarities with the conservation laws of fluid dynamics. This observation can be exploited in different ways. First of all, we show that this allows to employ powerful numerical techniques developed in the context of fluid dynamics to solve RG equations. In particular, it allows us to reliably treat the emergence of nonanalytic behavior in the RG flow of the effective action as it is expected to occur in studies of, e.g., spontaneous symmetry breaking. Second, the analogy between RG equations and fluid dynamics offers the opportunity to gain novel insights into RG flows and their interpretation in general, including the irreversibility of RG flows. Further, we work out this connection in practice by applying it to zero-dimensional quantum-field theoretical models. The generalization to higher-dimensional models is also discussed. Our findings are expected to help improving future FRG studies of quantum field theories in higher dimensions both on a qualitative and quantitative level.

Measurements of the branching fractions B ( B ¯ 0 → D * + π - ) and B ( B ¯ 0 → D * + K - ) and tests of QCD factorization

Using (771.6 ± 10.6) × 10 6 $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e + e - collider, we report the branching fractions $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ 0 → D* + π - ) = (2.62 ± 0.02 ± 0.09 X 10 -3 and $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ 0 → D* + K - ) = (2.22 ± 0.06 ± 0.08) × 10 -4 ; the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A measurement of the ratio of these branching fractions is also presented, R K/π = $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ → D* + K - )/ $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ → D* + π - ) = (8.41 ± 0.24 ± 0.13) × 10 -2 , where systematic uncertainties due to the D* + meson reconstruction cancel out. Furthermore, we report a new QCD factorization test based on the measured ratios for $\overline{B}$ → D* + h - and $\overline{B}$ → D* + ℓ - $v$ decays at squared momentum transfer values equivalent to the mass of the h = π or K hadron. The parameters |a 1 (h)| are measured to be |a 1 (π)| = 0.884 ± 0.004 ± 0.003 ± 0.016 and |a 1 (K)| = 0.913 ± 0.019 ± 0.008 ± 0.013, where the last uncertainties account for all external inputs. These values are approximately 15% lower than those expected from theoretical predictions. Subsequently, flavor SU(3) symmetry is tested by measuring the ratios for pions and kaons, |a 1 (K)| 2 /|a 1 (π) 2 | = 1.066 ± 0.042 ± 0.018 ± 0.023, as well as for different particle species. The ratio is consistent with unity and therefore no evidence for SU(3) symmetry breaking effects is found at the 5% precision level.

Novel features of attractors and transseries in nonconformal Bjorken flows

In this work we investigate the impact of conformal symmetry breaking on hydrodynamization of a far-from-equilibrium fluid. We find a new kind of transseries solutions for the nonconformal hydrodynamic equations of a longitudinal boost invariant expanding plasma. The new transseries solutions unveil a rich physical structure which arises due to the interplay of different physical scales. In the perfect fluid case the nonconformal speed of sound slows down the cooling of the temperature due to the emergence of logarithmic corrections that depends on the mass of the particle. Further, these terms propagate into the perturbative and nonperturbative sectors of the transseries once viscous corrections are included. The logarithmic mass contributions increase the asymptotic value of the Knudsen number while decreasing the damping rate of the transient nonhydrodynamic modes and thus, yielding to an extremely slow hydrodynamization process where flow lines merge to their forward attractor at extremely late times. The early time free streaming expansion is modified and receives logarithmic mass corrections induced by the shear-bulk couplings. The global flow structure and numerical analyses carried out in our work demonstrate the existence of local attraction at early and late times for the shear viscous tensor and bulk viscous pressure.

Update of Euclidean windows of the hadronic vacuum polarization

We compute the standard Euclidean window of the hadronic vacuum polarization using multiple independent blinded analyses. We improve the continuum and infinite-volume extrapolations of the dominant quark-connected light-quark isospin-symmetric contribution and address additional subleading systematic effects from sea-charm quarks and residual chiral-symmetry breaking from first principles. We find 𝑎$^{W}_{μ}$ = 235.56⁢(65)⁢(50) × 10 −10 , which is in 3.8⁢𝜎 tension with the recently published dispersive result of 𝑎$^{W}_{μ}$ =229.4⁢(1.4) × 10 −10 [G. Colangelo, A. X. El-Khadra, M. Hoferichter, A. Keshavarzi, C. Lehner, P. Stoffer, and T. Teubner, Phys. Lett. B 833, 137313 (2022)] and in agreement with other recent lattice determinations. We also provide a result for the standard short-distance window. The results reported here are unchanged compared to our presentation at the Edinburgh workshop of the g-2 Theory Initiative in 2022 [C. Lehner, Talk Presented at the 5th Plenary Meeting of the g-2 Theory Initiative in Edinburgh (2022)].

Dynamics of the O ( 4 ) critical point in QCD: Critical pions and diffusion in model G

We present a detailed study of the finite momentum dynamics of the O ( 4 ) critical point of QCD, which lies in the dynamic universality class of “model G.” The critical scaling of the model is analyzed in multiple dynamical channels. For instance, the finite momentum analysis allows us to precisely extract the pion dispersion curve below the critical point. The pion velocity is in striking agreement with the predictions relation and static universality. The pion damping rate and velocity are both consistent with the dynamical critical exponent ζ = 3 / 2 of model G. Similarly, although the critical amplitude for the diffusion coefficient of the conserved O ( 4 ) charges is small, it is clearly visible both in the restored phase and with finite explicit symmetry breaking, and its dynamical scaling is again consistent with ζ = 3 / 2 . We determine a new set of universal dynamical critical amplitude ratios relating the diffusion coefficient to a suitably defined order parameter relaxation time. We also show that in a finite volume simulation, the chiral condensate diffuses on the coset manifold in a manner consistent with dynamical scaling, and with a diffusion coefficient that is determined by the transport coefficients of hydrodynamic pions. Finally, the amplitude ratios (together with other nonuniversal amplitudes also reported here) compile all relevant information for further studies of model G both in and out of equilibrium. Higgs to b b ¯ from vector boson fusion for high-scale physics

Vector boson fusion is arguably the most direct collider probe of electroweak symmetry breaking. Typically, the signature includes two forward/backward jets with low transverse momenta with a scale that is set by the mass of the vector boson. For this reason, an upper cut is used when searching for vector boson fusion processes in the Standard Model. Alternatively, the upper cut on the forward jets can be removed and the high-momentum exchange region of vector boson fusion can be studied. This phase space region has sensitivity to new physics via higher dimensional operators and form factors. In this work, we study the high-momentum region of the vector boson fusion channel where the Higgs decays to b b ¯ . We show that, depending on the form of new physics, the limits on the new physics scale range from 0.5 to 1.8 TeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Majorana neutrinos and dark matter from anomaly cancellation

We discuss a simple theory for neutrino masses where the total lepton number is a local gauge symmetry spontaneously broken below the multi-TeV scale. In this context, the neutrino masses are generated through the canonical seesaw mechanism and a Majorana dark matter candidate is predicted from anomaly cancellation. We discuss in great detail the dark matter annihilation channels and find out the upper bound on the symmetry-breaking scale using the cosmological bounds on the relic density. Since in this context the dark matter candidate has suppressed couplings to the Standard Model quarks, one can satisfy the direct detection bounds even if the dark matter mass is close to the electroweak scale. This theory predicts a light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (the Majoron) associated to the mechanism of neutrino mass. We discuss briefly the properties of the Majoron and the impact of the big bang nucleosynthesis bounds. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Electroweak scattering at the muon shot

It has long been recognized that the scattering of electroweak particles at very high energies is dominated by vector boson fusion, which probes the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking and offers a unique window into the ultraviolet regime of the Standard Model (SM). Previous studies assume SM-like couplings and rely on the effective W approximation (or electroweak parton distribution), whose validity is well established within the SM but not yet studied in the presence of anomalous Higgs couplings. In this work, we critically examine the electroweak production of two Higgs bosons in the presence of anomalous V V h and V V h h couplings. We compute the corresponding helicity amplitudes and compare the cross section results in the effective W approximation with the full fixed-order calculation. In particular, we identify two distinct classes of anomalous Higgs couplings, whose effects are not captured by vector boson fusion and effective W approximation. Such very-high-energy electroweak scatterings can be probed at the muon shot, a multi-TeV muon collider upon which we base our study, although similar considerations apply to other high-energy colliders.
